Feminist philosophy seems to always exceed its own limits – it is dynamic, shifting, and in dialogue with other academic disciplines. The adjective “feminist” marks not so much a specific subfield of philosophy or topic that is studied, but a political sensibility, an engagement in practicing philosophy. The playful title ‘Purple Brains’ indicates a thinking that goes beyond established binaries, notably the gender binary signified by the colors pink and blue. As feminists, we face the challenge of finding our own place and inventing ways to understand and overcome discrimination and exclusion. Situated within a world we want to change, feminists cannot afford to reject unlikely interlocutors out of hand, but must instead engage in interdisciplinary, intergenerational and cross-fertilizing dialogues. This volume brings together 19 articles that practice feminist philosophy through an engagement with the work of Dutch philosopher Veronica Vasterling. As one of the pioneering women philosophers active in Dutch academia since the mid-1980s, Vasterling explicitly expanded her outlook to embrace feminist themes and authors. She stands out as a prominent figure in the exploration of the boundaries of feminism through critical dialogue across multiple perspectives. Her work not only explores neuropsychology through a feminist lens but also extends into domains such as critical phenomenology of gender and race, critical hermeneutics, and subjects including sexual difference, the philosophical oeuvre of Hannah Arendt, and that of Judith Butler.

Producing and Analyzing Macro-Connectomes: Current State and Challenges by Mihail Bota,Sharon Crook,Marcus Kaiser Pdf

Construction of comprehensive and detailed brain regions neuroanatomical connections matrices (macro-connectomes) is necessary to understand how the nervous system is organized and to elucidate how its different parts interact. Macro-connectomes also are the structural foundation of any finer granularity approaches at the neuron classes and types (meso-connectomes) or individual neuron (micro-connectomes) levels. The advent of novel neuroanatomical methods, as well as combinations of classic techniques, form the basis of several large scale projects with the ultimate goal of producing publicly available connectomes at different levels. A parallel approach, that of systematic and comprehensive collation of connectivity data from the published literature and from publicly accessible neuroinformatics platforms, has produced macro-connectomes of different parts of the central nervous system (CNS) in several mammalian species. The emergence of these public platforms that allow for the manipulation of rich connectivity data sets and enable the construction of CNS macro-connectomes in different species may have significant and long lasting implications. Moreover, when these efforts are leveraged by novel statistical methods, they may influence our way of thinking about the brain. Hence, the present brain region-centric paradigm may be challenged by a network-centric one. Ultimately, these projects will provide the information and knowledge for understanding how different neuronal parts communicate and function, developing novel approaches to diseases and disorders, and facilitating translational efforts in neurosciences. With this Research Topic we bring together the current state of macro-connectome related projects including the large scale production of thousands of publicly available neuronatomical experiments, databases with tens of thousands of connectivity records collated from the published literature, and the newest methods for displaying and analyzing this information. This topic also includes a wide range of challenges and how they are addressed - from platforms designed to integrate connectivity data across different sources, species and CNS levels of organization, to languages specifically designed to use these data in models at different scales of resolution, to efforts of 3D reconstruction and data integration, and to approaches for extraction and representation of this knowledge. Animal groups often display striking collective organization, which relies on social interactions. These interactions require neural substrates supporting the exchange of information among individuals and the processing of this information. The social brain hypothesis, suggested from neuroanatomical findings in primates, posits that increasing levels of sociality involve a higher investment in neural tissue to cope with social information. However, distributed cognition and swarm intelligence might alleviate the cognitive load on the individuals, and potentially reduce their neural requirements. Research on social insects, which are an exemplar of collective action, has so far produced mixed results. Individual cognition and collective action have received a lot of attention, and much progress has been done in each of those fields; however, much less is understood about how the two interact. Our goal is to aggregate theoretical and experimental research exploring the links between the complexity of individual and collective behaviors. Experimental research testing the social brain hypothesis showed little support for a general explanation across the animal kingdom. The relationship between the cognitive abilities of animals and their social interactions are much more complex than previously thought, and tackling this problem requires a better knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms underpinning socio-cognitive tasks. What is the information used by the animals during social interactions? How much information is necessary? How many neurons and which neural circuits are required for processing this information? What neural connections are important? Do these social interactions involve memory formation? How do the cognitive requirements and neural circuits vary between group members? Answering these questions will bring considerable insights into the cognitive complexity involved for social and collective behaviors. It will also advance our understanding of inter-individual cognitive variability and division of labor in most socially advanced species. This Research Topic will be a unique forum for researchers from different fields (neurogenetics, neuro-ethology, evolutionary ecology, cognitive ecology, collective animal behavior, computational modeling) working on different species to present up to date advances on the physiological correlates of social behavior and delineate future directions for the field of social neuroethology. We welcome contributions on any aspect of the cognitive requirements of social and collective behaviors, from molecular, cellular, and circuit level approaches to how individuals contribute to group action at the behavioral level. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, studies on the neural underpinnings of division of labor, neuromodulation or neurogenetics of social behaviors, the neural circuits and neuroanatomical basis of group action, and how social signals affect learning and behavior. We encourage submissions that present original research and review evidence or compare data from multiple species. We hope to include work from different disciplines and on a wide range of species, including model, non-model, and wild animals, with the aim of gaining insight into the patterns of neural investment in individual cognition
