Relational and Algebraic Methods in Computer Science by Wolfram Kahl,Michael Winter,José Oliveira Pdf

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Relational and Algebraic Methods in Computer Science, RAMiCS 2015, held in Braga, Portugal, in September/October 2015. The 20 revised full papers and 3 invited papers presented were carefully selected from 25 submissions. The papers deal with the theory of relation algebras and Kleene algebras, process algebras; fixed point calculi; idempotent semirings; quantales, allegories, and dynamic algebras; cylindric algebras, and about their application in areas such as verification, analysis and development of programs and algorithms, algebraic approaches to logics of programs, modal and dynamic logics, interval and temporal logics.

The Situated Self by J.T. Ismael Pdf

J.T. Ismael's monograph is an ambitious contribution to metaphysics and the philosophy of language and mind. She tackles a philosophical question whose origin goes back to Descartes: What am I? The self is not a mere thing among things--but if so, what is it, and what is its relationship to the world? Ismael is an original and creative thinker who tries to understand our problematic concepts about the self and how they are related to our use of language in particular.

International Handbook of Interpretation in Educational Research by Paul Smeyers,David Bridges,Nicholas C. Burbules,Morwenna Griffiths Pdf

This handbook focuses on the often neglected dimension of interpretation in educational research. It argues that all educational research is in some sense ‘interpretive’, and that understanding this issue belies some usual dualisms of thought and practice, such as the sharp dichotomy between ‘qualitative’ and ‘quantitative’ research. Interpretation extends from the very framing of the research task, through the sources which constitute the data, the process of their recording, representation and analysis, to the way in which the research is finally or provisionally presented. The thesis of the handbook is that interpretation cuts across the fields (both philosophically, organizationally and methodologically). By covering a comprehensive range of research approaches and methodologies, the handbook gives (early career) researchers what they need to know in order to decide what particular methods can offer for various educational research contexts/fields. An extensive overview includes concrete examples of different kinds of research (not limited for example to ‘teaching’ and ‘learning’ examples as present in the Anglo-Saxon tradition, but including as well what in the German Continental tradition is labelled ‘pädagogisch’, examples from child rearing and other contexts of non-formal education) with full description and explanation of why these were chosen in particular circumstances and reflection on the wisdom or otherwise of the choice – combined in each case with consideration of the role of interpretation in the process. The handbook includes examples of a large number of methods traditionally classified as qualitative, interpretive and quantitative used across the area of the study of education. Examples are drawn from across the globe, thus exemplifying the different ‘opportunities and constraints’ that educational research has to confront in different societies.

Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology by Gary M. Olson,Thomas W. Malone,John B. Smith Pdf

The National Science Foundation funded the first Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology initiative to look at systems that support collaborations in business and elsewhere. This book explores the global revolution in human interconnectedness. It will discuss the various collaborative workgroups and their use in technology. The initiative focuses on processes of coordination and cooperation among autonomous units in human systems, in computer and communication systems, and in hybrid organizations of both systems. This initiative is motivated by three scientific issues which have been the focus of separate research efforts, but which may benefit from collaborative research. The first is the effort to discover the principles underlying how people collaborate and coordinate work efficiently and productively in environments characterized by a high degree of decentralized computation and decision making. The second is to gain a better fundamental understanding of the structure and outputs of organizations, industries, and markets which incorporate sophisticated, decentralized information and communications technology as an important component of their operations. The third is to understand problems of coordination in decentralized or open computer systems.

Nonstandard Analysis by Martin Väth Pdf

This book introduces Robinson's nonstandard analysis, an application of model theory in analysis. Unlike some texts, it does not attempt to teach elementary calculus on the basis of nonstandard analysis, but points to some applications in more advanced analysis. The contents proceed from a discussion of the preliminaries to Nonstandard Models; Nonstandard Real Analysis; Enlargements and Saturated Models; Functionals, Generalized Limits, and Additive Measures; and finally Nonstandard Topology and Functional Analysis. No background in model theory is required, although some familiarity with analysis, topology, or functional analysis is useful. This self-contained book can be understood after a basic calculus course.
