Quaint Nantucket (Classic Reprint) by William Root Bliss Pdf

Excerpt from Quaint Nantucket If the tradition is to be believed, these rustic mariners made themselves exiles from home, to be outcasts upon an island which was thirty miles distant from the mainland; where none of the comforts Of life existed, where wintry gales blew with a roar like the roar of iron-mills, and sea fowl sometimes perished in a struggle for life. Nantucket by R. A. Douglas-Lithgow Pdf

Excerpt from Nantucket: A History As no systematic historical record of Nantucket has appeared since 1835, when Obed Macy's History was published, and as for some time past a general desire has been expressed that a new history, of a popular character, be issued, the writer, at the solicitation of several prominent islanders, at length consented to compile such a work. The present volume, which is the result of such an endeavor, has been written under difficulties, not the least of which has been the author's residence on the mainland. In view of this circumstance it could not have been produced at all without the collaboration of numerous friends and much correspondence. While every competent authority has been consulted, a special effort has been made to compress the material at the writer's disposal into a work of limited compass, and at the same time to leave unchronicled no important matters. The history of the island in the latter half of the nineteenth century has not before been systematically recorded. Nantucket Odyssey by Emil Frederick Guba Pdf

Excerpt from Nantucket Odyssey: A Journey Into the History of Nantucket The story of Nantucket and its people is the story of the growth of America, of adventure, hardship and toil, human sacrifice, and free enterprise in a friendly, unostentatious society The spirit of peace and restfulness still pervades the island, but the odor and industry of whale oil are gone. The writer was attracted to Nantucket to explore its fascinating fungous flora and by an organized interest there in the island's natural science. The old landmarks, the nar row streets and the old houses of weathered gray shingles prompted him to inquire into its past. He was inquisitive, but he never intended to neglect his Nantucket botany to write this patchwork quilt of episodes of the island and its former people. Nevertheless it happened. There's a spell in Nantucket well known to bewitch, Which exerts the same charm o'er the poor and the rich. Death on Nantucket by Francine Mathews Pdf

Francine Mathews' no-nonsense Nantucket police detective, Merry Folger, is back on the case after nineteen years. Death on Nantucket, the fifth Merry Folger Mystery, is full of regional charm, a strong sense of local history, and foggy New England Island atmosphere. Spencer Murphy is a national treasure. A famous Vietnam War correspondent who escaped captivity in Southeast Asia, he made a fortune off of his books and television appearances. But Spence is growing forgetful with age; he’s started to wander and even fails to come home one night. When a body is discovered at Step Above, the sprawling Murphy house near Steps Beach, Nantucket police detective Meredith Folger is called in to investigate. The timing couldn’t be worse: It’s the Fourth of July, and tourists are arriving in droves to celebrate on Nantucket’s beaches, so the police force is spread thin. On top of that Merry is planning her wedding to cranberry farmer Peter Mason, and her new boss, an ex-Chicago police chief with an aggressive management strategy, seems to be trying to force her to quit. Merry can’t conclude the Murphy investigation quickly enough for him. As she grapples with a family of unreliable storytellers—some incapable of recalling the past, and others determined that it never be known—she suspects that the truth may be forever out of reach, trapped in the failing brain of a man whose whole life may be a lie.
