Qualifications and Duties of Ruling Elders in the Presbyterian Church (Classic Reprint) by William Morrison Engles Pdf

Excerpt from Qualifications and Duties of Ruling Elders in the Presbyterian Church But those who hear rule in the Church of Christ, should not only ascertain the gentrineness of their piety, but possess the graces of the Christian in more than their ordinary degree of perfection. Their piety should not only be real but conspi cuous. Without attempting to enumerate all the traits in which their exemplariness should be manifest, it may not be amiss to give prominence to a few. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1831 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER iltt. OF THE ORDINATION OF RULING ELDERS. By Ordination is meant that solemn rite, or act, by which a candidate for any office in the Church of Christ, is authoritatively designated to that office, by those who are clothed with power for the purpose. It cannot require formal argument to prove, thatthis rite, or something analagous and equivalent to jt, is indispensable in conducting all regular ecclesiastical government. If certain officers have been appointed in the Church by Jesus Christ, her King and Head;--if certain qualifications have been declared by Him indispensable to fit men for serving the Church in these offices, without which they ought not to be permitted to occupy them;--and if an extraordinary and immediate designation to office by Jesus Christ himself, be not now to be expected in any case;--if these things be so, it inevitably follows, that some person or persons must have power committed to them by the Head of the Church, to examine or try candidates for these offices; to judge of their qualifications; and, if approved, to invest them with office. The idea that, with such directions as the New Testament contains on this subject, men should be left at liberty to take these offices upon themselves, by their own act, and at their own pleasure--is full of absurdity; and, if realized, would undoubtedly lead to endless disorder and mischief. Only suppose the secular offices of a nation to be thus assumed by men at will; and by none more readily than the vain, the ignorant, the self-sufficient, and the ambi. tious;--as would inevitably be the case, if such were the path of access to office;--and there would be an end of all order. But if it be neither safe nor permitted for men to intrude into official stations...

A Hand-Book for Ruling Elders (Classic Reprint) by John S. Watkins Pdf

Excerpt from A Hand-Book for Ruling Elders HE writer of this little treatise was ap pointed by Enoree Presbytery to prepare a manual for the use of ruling elders. The need for such a work was very apparent. Many of the churches held religious services only once a month, and several of them were vacant. Special demands were made upon the elders, and it was evident that the prosperity of these churches depended largely upon their fidelity. It was felt that a clearer and more enlarged conception of the office and duties of the elder was needed both by the members of the churches and the elders themselves. It was thought that a hand-book containing not only instruction, but also some optional forms and practical suggestions would be of great service. Several manuals have been pre pared for ministers, to assist them in the dis charge of their ministerial duties, and have proved helpful. Why should not our elders have something corresponding to aid them in the performance of their duties? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Brief Biographies of Ruling Elders in the First Presbyterian Church, Allegheny During the First Fifty Years of Its History by Elliot Elisha Swift Pdf

Excerpt from Brief Biographies of Ruling Elders in the First Presbyterian Church, Allegheny During the First Fifty Years of Its History: Portions of Which Were Read at the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Church, February 26th, 1880 A general invitation had been given through the press, to former members Of the congregation, to the ministers of the cities, and to the people Of the community. A response was rendered by the presence of very many from the churches in the cities and suburbs. The representation from the church of Sewickley was specially noticeable, the early growth of that church having been strengthened by accessions from Allegheny. Through the whole commemoration, the presence of the choir, with its appropriate music, greatly added to the interest of the occasion. The Ruling Elder at Work (Classic Reprint) by John Aspinwall Hodge Pdf

Excerpt from The Ruling Elder at Work We have many excellent books on the office of the Ruling Elder. It has been shown to be a divine ordinance in every dispensation of the church of God, and an essential part of the Form of Govern ment taught in the Old and New Testaments. The nature of this office, its dignity, importance, respon sibilities and rewards; the manner and spirit in which its duties are to be performed trial_s_and encouragements; and Wherein it din'ers from the other permanent offices of the church, have been carefully set forth. My experience, however, as Pastor and Teacher, has convinced me, that both in our Seminaries and congregations, instruction in church polity should be practical as well as theo retical. Our students feel this, when they enter upon the active duties of the ministry. 1 am not surprised that Ruling Elders also are desiring instruction, in a practical form, concerning their office and duties.
