Land Surface Evaporation by Thomas J. Schmugge,Jean-Claude Andre Pdf

General circulation model (GCM) experiments in the late 1970's indicated that the climate is sensitive to variations in evaporation at the land surface. Thus, in the context of climate modeling, it became important to develop techniques which would realistically estimate the evaporation flux on land. Land Surface Evaporation: Measurement and Parameterization discusses strategies for the use of experimental data in developing and testing parameterization schemes of the evaporation flux in GCM's. The book reviews state-of-the-art techniques, such as remote sensing, which measure evaporation fluxes over continental surfaces. It evaluates their relevance with respect to the various spatial and temporal scales of interest. This book will provide researchers in climatology, meteorology, hydrology and water management, and remote sensing with a thorough overview of current research in land surface evaporation. It will also give young scientists insight into surface processes.

Atmospheric Acoustics by Xunren Yang Pdf

This book concisely expounds the fundamental concepts, phenomena, theories and procedures in a complete and systematic sense. In this book, not only almost all the important achievements from predecessors but also the contributions from the author himself have been summed up profoundly. Starting from the derivation of fundamental equations, various classical acoustical phenomena such as reflection, refraction, scattering diffraction and absorption in atmosphere, as well as the influences of gravitation and rotation of the earth on the behaviors of different atmospheric waves including acoustic waves, have been discussed in viewpoints of wave acoustics and geometrical acoustics respectively. The recent developments of several computation methods in the field of atmospheric acoustics have been introduced in some detail. As for the application aspects, atmospheric remote sensing has been discussed from the angle of inverse problems.

The Use of an Acoustic Echo Sounder for Optical Tracking Applications by Duane A. Haugen,J. C. Kaimal,Jim T. Newman Pdf

A pilot study to obtain data on the seeing quality of the atmosphere was conducted in August 1974 as part of ARPA's Compensated Imaging Program at the ARPA Maui Observation Station (AMOS). The AMOS site is located atop Mt. Haleakala, about 10,000 ft above sea level, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, presumably in an environment where degradation of optical tracking due to turbulent fluctuations in the index of refraction is minimal. As the compensated Imaging Program evolved, it became increasingly clear that detailed knowledge of atmospheric turbulence properties at AMOS was essential to the success of the program. One aspect of the pilot study conducted was to evaluate the feasibility of using an acoustic echo sounder to obtain that information. The results of that evaluation are summarized in this report. In general, subject to certain limitations, it was found that the acoustic echo sounder shows valuable potential as a remote probe for quantitative determination of the temperature structure parameter to heights in excess of 300 m. Since the temperature structure parameter is directly related to the refractive index structure parameter, the sounder is immensely useful for general application to optical propagation programs.
