This book presents the expanded versions of invited papers presented at the International Symposium on the Life Cycles of Extratropical Cyclones, held in Bergen, Norway, 27 June–1 July 1994. It is of particular interest to historians of meteorology, researchers and forecasters. The material can be used for advanced undergraduate and undergraduate meteorology courses, and it represents a useful source of references to extratropical cyclones. The book provides the historical background of extratropical cyclone research and forecasting from the eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century. It also presents extratropical cyclone theory, observations, analysis, diagnosis and prediction.

Synoptic-Dynamic Meteorology and Weather Analysis and Forecasting by Lance Bosart,Howard Bluestein Pdf

This long-anticipated monograph honoring scientist and teacher Fred Sanders includes 16 articles by various authors as well as dozens of unique photographs evoking Fred's character and the vitality of the scientific community he helped develop through his work. Editors Lance F. Bosart (University at Albany/SUNY) and Howard B. Bluestein (University of Oklahoma at Norman) have brought together contributions from luminary authors-including Kerry Emanuel, Robert Burpee, Edward Kessler, and Louis Uccellini-to honor Fred's work in the fields of forecasting, weather analysis, synoptic meteorology, and climatology. The result is a significant volume of work that represents a lasting record of Fred Sanders' influence on atmospheric science and legacy of teaching.

Northeast Snowstorms by Paul Kocin,Louis Uccellini Pdf

Designed with researchers, students, and weather observers and enthusiasts in mind, Northeast Snowstorms takes the unique approach of utilizing conventional weather charts and detailed descriptions of individual storms to analyze storms in a multi-disciplinary way. The most comprehensive treatment of winter storms ever compiled, this two-volume set includes case studies, insights, historic photos, and 200 color figures. The extra material on the SpringerExtras server contains five days of complete reanalysis data at 35-km grid resolution and 64 vertical levels for each of the cases. This allows everyone from enthusiasts to students to conduct their own diagnostic studies or research projects for any of the 70 historic cases, from a PC or workstation environment. Instructors take note: this is an excellent tool for creating classroom exercises.

Assessment of Climate Change over the Indian Region by R. Krishnan,J. Sanjay,Chellappan Gnanaseelan,Milind Mujumdar,Ashwini Kulkarni,Supriyo Chakraborty Pdf

This open access book discusses the impact of human-induced global climate change on the regional climate and monsoons of the Indian subcontinent, adjoining Indian Ocean and the Himalayas. It documents the regional climate change projections based on the climate models used in the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) and climate change modeling studies using the IITM Earth System Model (ESM) and CORDEX South Asia datasets. The IPCC assessment reports, published every 6–7 years, constitute important reference materials for major policy decisions on climate change, adaptation, and mitigation. While the IPCC assessment reports largely provide a global perspective on climate change, the focus on regional climate change aspects is considerably limited. The effects of climate change over the Indian subcontinent involve complex physical processes on different space and time scales, especially given that the mean climate of this region is generally shaped by the Indian monsoon and the unique high-elevation geographical features such as the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the Tibetan Plateau and the adjoining Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and Bay of Bengal. This book also presents policy relevant information based on robust scientific analysis and assessments of the observed and projected future climate change over the Indian region.

From weather observations to atmospheric and climate sciences in Switzerland by Saskia Willemse,Markus Furger Pdf

In 2016 the Swiss Society for Meteorology (Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Meteorologie, SGM) celebrates its 100th anniversary. Compared to other meteorological societies it is not among the oldest ones. Nevertheless, meteorology has gone through such a remarkable evolution in the past 100 years that it is worthwhile to take a look back and recapitulate the developments of both science and SGM – and to reveal their interaction. The idea of this book is to give an overview of what has happened in the field of atmospheric sciences in Switzerland since the first systematic long-term meteorological observations until today.

Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology by Roger G. Barry,Andrew M. Carleton Pdf

Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology provides the first comprehensive account of the dynamical behaviour and mechanisms of the global climate system and its components, together with a modern survey of synoptic-scale weather systems in the tropics and extratropics, and of the methods and applications of synoptic climate classification. It is unrivalled in the scope and detail of its contents. The work is thoroughly up to date, with extensive bibliographies by chapter. It is illustrated with nearly 300 figures and plates. *Part 1 provides an introduction to the global climate system and the space-time scales of weather and climate processes, followed by a chapter on climate data and their analysis *Part 2 describes and explains the characteristics of the general circulation of the global atmosphere and includes the nature and causes of global teleconnection patterns *Part 3 discusses synoptic weather systems in the extratropics and tropics and satellite-based climatologies of synoptic features. It also describes the applications of synoptic climatology and summarises current climatic research and its directions.

The International Antarctic Weather Forecasting Handbook by John Turner,Stephen Pendlebury Pdf

Presents an overview of the meteorology and climatology of the Antarctic aimed at the forecaster who are new to working on the continent. Many forecasters who arrive at Antarctic research stations have no previous experience of forecasting on the continent and many come from the Northern Hemisphere, so making it even more difficult for them to adjust to the analysis and forecasting tasks that they will have to carry out. Although the majority of the forecasters will have had some training in Antarctic forecasting methods prior to travelling South this section of the handbook should be a useful introduction to the meteorological conditions experienced across the continent. In addition, in Appendix 4 there is a suggested training programme for Antarctic weather forecasters that presents a more structured introduction to analysis and prediction techniques for those who are required to prepare training modules.
