Queer Quotes by Teresa Theophano Pdf

Hundreds of inspirational, humorous, and provocative quotations about being queer What is a queer quote? It's a reflection on love and romance, culture and art, family and friends, and the foibles and follies of life. It's an insight into not only what it means to be gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender in our society, but what it means to be human. It's fresh, entertaining, and celebratory. Queer Quotes is a compendium of wit and wisdom from well-known historical and contemporary cultural figures-from Oscar Wilde to Rita Mae Brown, from Quentin Crisp to Sandra Bernhardt, from James Baldwin to RuPaul. Often amusing, the quotes are also thought-provoking and up-to-date, and chapters ranging from "Love and Gay Marriage" to "Out of the Closets, into the Streets" to "HIV/AIDS" to "Queer History" reflect this book's scope. Including an index as well as short biographies of all the individuals quoted, Queer Quotes is a wonderful resource and an ideal gift book. We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib Pdf

CANADA READS 2020 WINNER NATIONAL BESTSELLER 2020 LAMBDA LITERARY AWARD WINNER How do you find yourself when the world tells you that you don't exist? Samra Habib has spent most of her life searching for the safety to be herself. As an Ahmadi Muslim growing up in Pakistan, she faced regular threats from Islamic extremists who believed the small, dynamic sect to be blasphemous. From her parents, she internalized the lesson that revealing her identity could put her in grave danger. When her family came to Canada as refugees, Samra encountered a whole new host of challenges: bullies, racism, the threat of poverty, and an arranged marriage. Backed into a corner, her need for a safe space--in which to grow and nurture her creative, feminist spirit--became dire. The men in her life wanted to police her, the women in her life had only shown her the example of pious obedience, and her body was a problem to be solved. So begins an exploration of faith, art, love, and queer sexuality, a journey that takes her to the far reaches of the globe to uncover a truth that was within her all along. A triumphant memoir of forgiveness and family, both chosen and not, We Have Always Been Here is a rallying cry for anyone who has ever felt out of place and a testament to the power of fearlessly inhabiting one's truest self.

To Quote a Queer by John Lessard Pdf

We’re here! We’re queer! And we’re hilarious! Not to mention clever, eloquent, bitchy, poetic, luminous, and dead-on brilliant! To Quote a Queer features more than 2,000 quotations from the LGBT community and icons of queer culture on a wide range of subjects, including • Childhood: “Bike-riding and tree-climbing may be typically boyish, but they were merely means to my sissified ends; I wanted, like an eight-year-old Garbo, to be alone.” - Dan Savage • Coming Out: “What happened to me is exactly the opposite of what closeted people fear. They think they’ll lose everything if they come out. This did not happen to me at all. In fact, everything came back tenfold.” - Melissa Etheridge • Fame: “When you become a public figure, you become at the same time a product, and people actually look at your ‘expiration date,’ you know? They look at your age and say, ‘Hmm. How fresh is this one?’” - Rupaul • Writing: “You have to write a lot of bad poetry to get a good line of prose.” - Dorothy Allison • Humor: “If I’m going to make fun of something, I need to find that in myself and then exaggerate it.” - David Sedaris

Working Papers Film & TV studies - WP 2011/1: Gay representation, queer resistance, and the small screen by Frederic Dhaenens Pdf

Drawing on the fruitful insights of queer theory, this study departs from the notion that popular culture can function as articulations of resistance to the discourse of heteronormativity that is being reiterated and consolidated in popular culture products. In particular, this study focuses on the potential of gay representation (representations of those who are identified and/or self-identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual) in contemporary television fiction to resist heteronormative institutions, practices, norms and values.

Native by Kaitlin B. Curtice Pdf

Native is about identity, soul-searching, and the never-ending journey of finding ourselves and finding God. As both a citizen of the Potawatomi Nation and a Christian, Kaitlin Curtice offers a unique perspective on these topics. In this book, she shows how reconnecting with her Potawatomi identity both informs and challenges her faith. Curtice draws on her personal journey, poetry, imagery, and stories of the Potawatomi people to address themes at the forefront of today's discussions of faith and culture in a positive and constructive way. She encourages us to embrace our own origins and to share and listen to each other's stories so we can build a more inclusive and diverse future. Each of our stories matters for the church to be truly whole. As Curtice shares what it means to experience her faith through the lens of her Indigenous heritage, she reveals that a vibrant spirituality has its origins in identity, belonging, and a sense of place.

The Heartbreak Bakery by A. R. Capetta Pdf

Teenage baker Syd sends ripples of heartbreak through Austin’s queer community when a batch of post-being-dumped brownies turns out to be magical—and makes everyone who eats them break up. “What’s done is done.” Unless, of course, it was done by my brownies. Then it’s getting undone. Syd (no pronouns, please) has always dealt with big, hard-to-talk-about things by baking. Being dumped is no different, except now Syd is baking at the Proud Muffin, a queer bakery and community space in Austin. And everyone who eats Syd’s breakup brownies . . . breaks up. Even Vin and Alec, who own the Proud Muffin. And their breakup might take the bakery down with it. Being dumped is one thing; causing ripples of queer heartbreak through the community is another. But the cute bike delivery person, Harley (he or they, check the pronoun pin, it’s probably on the messenger bag), believes Syd about the magic baking. And Harley believes Syd’s magical baking can fix things, too—one recipe at a time.

Post-Queer Politics by David V. Ruffolo Pdf

In Post-Queer Politics, Ruffolo looks at the work of Foucault, Butler, Bakhtin, Deleuze, Guattari and others in his creative refocus on the queer/heteronormative dyad that has largely consumed queer studies and contemporary politics. He offers a radical and intersectional new way of thinking about class, race, sex, gender, sexuality and ability that extends beyond queer studies to be truly transdisciplinary in its focus and political implications. It will appeal to readers across a range of subjects, including gender and sexuality studies, philosophy, cultural studies, political science, and education.

Translating the Queer by Héctor Domínguez Ruvalcaba Pdf

What does it mean to queer a concept? If queerness is a notion that implies a destabilization of the normativity of the body, then all cultural systems contain zones of discomfort relevant to queer studies. What then might we make of such zones when the use of the term queer itself has transcended the fields of sex and gender, becoming a metaphor for addressing such cultural phenomena as hybridization, resignification, and subversion? Further still, what should we make of it when so many people are reluctant to use the term queer, because they view it as theoretical colonialism, or a concept that loses its specificity when applied to a culture that signifies and uses the body differently? Translating the Queer focuses on the dissemination of queer knowledge, concepts, and representations throughout Latin America, a migration that has been accompanied by concomitant processes of translation, adaptation, and epistemological resistance.
