Quicklet on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson by Eric Boudreaux Pdf

Quicklets: Learn more. Read less. Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1937, Hunter S. Thompson was a consummate journeyman, wandering the globe in search of God knows what. He spent the early part of his career writing about sports. In fact, his personality can be closely linked to another Louisville product of the same era: Muhammad Ali. Both men, fueled by a certain sense of self-love, spat in the face of authority, decorum and everything else that mid-century America held dear. True to the ethos of Gonzo Journalism, Fear and Loathing is loosely based on two trips (pun intended) Thompson took with an attorney, Oscar Zeta Acosta, to Las Vegas in 1971. Thompson, a professional writer closely associated with some of the country's biggest magazines, was sent by Sports Illustrated to write an elongated picture caption for the Mint 400, one of the world's most lucrative off-road races. A few months later, Thompson was sent to Las Vegas again to cover a drug conference held by the National District Attorneys. What was supposed to be a couple hundred words about an off-road race turned into a manuscript nearly ten times the size. The work was rejected outright by Sports Illustrated, but accepted by Rolling Stone. Thompson notoriously reluctant to review and revise his own works completed five drafts of the book before its publishing. Fear and Loathing was met by much critical acclaim. It was thought by Thompson's contemporaries to be one of the best books ever written about the 1960s drug culture.

Quicklet on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations by Nicole Bemboom Pdf

ABOUT THE BOOK No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach is based off the content and experiences of Anthony Bourdain during filmings of the widely popular Travel Channel show, No Reservations. Anthony Bourdain, the host of the show, travels the world, showcasing foods ranging from late night street food, to a meal cooked by a Maharana. Not intending for this book to be some cynical, cheap-ass companion book to the series, Bourdain includes photos that were taken along the way mostly by the shows production assistants. Although this book does complement the show, and gives a more in-depth view of many favorite episodes, it could also stand on its own as a photographic travelogue. As Bourdain says in the introduction, the books photos try to give viewers a brief taste, a sense of what [they] felt during the relatively short time [they] were there, instead of doing a best of, or, even worse, attempting to create a comprehensive view of the place. MEET THE AUTHOR Nicole Bemboom is a San Francisco based writer. In addition to writing for the exciting new publisher Hyperink, she covers the best of modern craft and design for the online magazine Handful of Salt. She received her BA in Modern Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Anthony Bourdains No Reservations follows his team as they travel the world making the show. Frequently travelling with Bourdain are Tracey Gudwin (field producer), Todd Liebler (cameraman), and Diane Schutz and Rennik Soholt (assistant producers). The crew took photos throughout in almost thirty countries, meeting an incredible diversity of people and eating an insane variety of foods. Bourdain hopes these photos, along with the show, will reveal a real sense of the places they see the smells and the sounds, as well as the visual elements. The cast allows the country and the circumstances (and misadventures) of their travels to drive the content and style of the show. They often also heavily use the cinema of the country they visit. To begin this journey around the world, Bourdain declares that deep inside every great cook... anyone who knows what the good stuff is and what to do with itlurks the heart and soul of a Chinese guy. Generally considered to have one of the greatest cuisines in the world, China serves as Bourdains go-to locale. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S Pdf

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive... ." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?" Then it was quiet again. My attorney had taken his shirt off and was pouring beer on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. "What the hell are you yelling about?" he muttered, staring up at the sun with his eyes closed and covered with wraparound Spanish sunglasses. "Never mind," I said. "It's your turn to drive." I hit the brakes and aimed the Great Red Shark toward the shoulder of the highway. No point mentioning those bats, I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough. It was almost noon, and we still had more than a hundred miles to go. They would be tough miles. Very soon, I knew, we would both be completely twisted. But there was no going back, and no time to rest. We would have to ride it out. Press registration for the fabulous Mint 400 was already underway, and we had to get there by four to claim our sound-proof suite. A fashionable sporting magazine in New York had taken care of the reservations, along with this huge red Chevy convertible we'd just rented off a lot on the Sunset Strip...and I was, after all, a professional journalist; so I had an obligation to cover the story, for good or ill.The sporting editors had also given me $300 in cash, most of which was already spent on extremely dangerous drugs. The trunk of the car looked like a mobile police narcotics lab. We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers and also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. All this had been rounded up the night before, in a frenzy of high-speed driving all over Los Angeles County-from Topanga to Watts, we picked up everything we could get our hands on. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

British Summer Time Begins by Ysenda Maxtone Graham Pdf

British Summer Time Begins is about summer holidays of the mid-twentieth century and how they were spent, as recounted to Ysenda Maxtone-Graham in vividly remembered detail by people who were there. Through this prism, it paints a revealing portrait of twentieth-century Britain in summertime: how we were, how families functioned, what houses and gardens and streets were like, what journeys were like, and what people did all day in their free time. It explores their expectations, hopes, fears and habits, the rules or lack of rules under which they lived, their happiness and sadness, their sense of being treasured or neglected - all within living memory, from pre-war summers to the late 1970s. Ysenda takes us back to the long stretch of time from the last days of June till the early days of September - those months when the term-time self was cast off and you could become the person you really were, and you had (if you were lucky) enough hours in the endless succession of days to become good at the things that would later define your adulthood. The 'showpiece' part of the summer holidays was 'the summer holiday', when families took off to the seaside, or to grandparents' houses teeming with cousins, or on early package holidays to France or Spain, siblings wedged into the back of small cars, roof-racks clattering, mothers preparing picnics. British Summer Time Begins is as much about the long weeks either side of that holiday as the trip itself: the weeks when nothing much officially happened, boredom often lurked nearby, and you vanished for hours on end, nobody much knowing or even caring where you were. Could it be that those unscheduled days were actually the most important and formative of your life? From the author of the beloved Terms & Conditions, British Summer Time Begins is a delightful, nostalgic and joyous celebration of summers.

The Land of Maybe by TIM. ECOTT Pdf

"Following the natural cycle of the year, The Land of Maybe captures the essence of 'slow life' on the 18 remote, mysterious islands which make up the Faroes in the North Atlantic. Closer to the UK than Denmark, this fast disappearing world is home to a close-knit society where just 50,000 people share Viking roots and a language that is unlike any other in Scandinavia. We follow the arrival of the migratory birds, the over-wintering of the sheep and the way food is gathered and eaten in tune with the seasons. Buffeted by the weather and the demands of a volatile natural environment, people still hunt seabirds and herd pilot whales for a significant portion of their basic food needs. This is not a travelogue, but a deeper exploration of how 'to be' in a tough landscape; a study of a people and a way of life that represents continuity and a deep connection to the past. The Land of Maybe offers not just a refuge from the freneticism of modern life, but lessons about where we come from and how we may find a balance in our lives"--Publisher's description.

Walking the Great North Line by Robert Twigger Pdf

Robert Twigger, poet and travel author, was in search of a new way up England when he stumbled across the Great North Line. From Christchurch on the South Coast to Old Sarum to Stonehenge, to Avebury, to Notgrove barrow, to Meon Hill in the midlands, to Thor's Cave, to Arbor Low stone circle, to Mam Tor, to Ilkley in Yorkshire and its three stone circles and the Swastika Stone, to several forts and camps in Northumberland to Lindisfarne (plus about thirty more sites en route). A single dead straight line following 1 degree 50 West up Britain. No other north-south straight line goes through so many ancient sites of such significance. Was it just a suggestive coincidence or were they built intentionally? Twigger walks the line, which takes him through Birmingham, Halifax and Consett as well as Salisbury Plain, the Peak district, and the Yorkshire moors. With a planning schedule that focused more on reading about shamanism and beat poetry than hardening his feet up, he sets off ever hopeful. He wild-camps along the way, living like a homeless bum, with a heart that starts stifled but ends up soaring with the beauty of life. He sleeps in a prehistoric cave, falls into a river, crosses a 'suicide viaduct' and gets told off by a farmer's wife for trespassing; but in this simple life he finds woven gold. He walks with others and he walks alone, ever alert to the incongruities of the edgelands he is journeying through.
