It has been widely read and studied in China ever since its initial publication. The book eventually spread to other countries and is now a worldwide classic. To note one example, The Art of War is one of the books included on the Marine Corps' Recommended Reading List. The first western translation of The Art of War was published by a Jesuit named Joseph Amiot, who translated it to French in 1782. In 1905, British Captain E.F. Calthrop translated the book into English. Sinologist Lionel Giles published a new English translation in 1910 after criticizing the accuracy of Calthrop's translation. Another English translation was published by Marine Corps Brigadier General Samuel B. Griffith. Starting around the late 20th century, people began studying The Art of War in contexts other than pure military strategy. The most notable example of this is the application of the book's principles to business. Quicklet on Robert Greene's The 48 Laws of Power (CliffNotes-like Book Summary and Analysis) by Joseph Taglieri Pdf

ABOUT THE BOOK Whether you seek to gain, observe, or protect yourself from domination by the forces of power in the world, Robert Greene’s comprehensive tome on this intriguing subject is in many ways a groundbreaking work of literature. The 48 Laws of Power synthesizes the thoughts of a host of history’s most influential thinkers including Machiavelli, Sun-tzu, Carl von Clausewitz and others. Not only is it rich in the history of power politics and warfare spanning three millennia, the book has real-life relevance to those contending with the affect on our lives in modern times. Greene’s 48 laws demonstrate how qualities such as prudence, cunning, stealth and subtlety, and a complete lack of mercy or compassion for one’s enemies come into play with humanity’s power dynamic. It’s apparent that those who feel powerless in today’s globalized economy driven by the politics of big-money capitalism are a target audience of this book. The preface begins: “The feeling of having no power over people and events is generally unbearable to us—when we feel helpless we feel miserable.” Very much like the social and political pressures contained within an old royal court, a duplicitous game of non-overt power moves is the key to success in the current power paradigm. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK If you aren’t sure of a course of action to take, then don’t try it. Doubt and hesitancy will hamper your ability to operate. It’s always better to begin a course of action boldly. “Any mistakes you commit through audacity are easily corrected with more audacity. Everyone admires the bold; no one honors the timid” (The 48 Laws of Power).Plan all the way to the end. Never neglect to envision the end result of any endeavor. Plan all the way to to the very end and account for “all the possible consequences, obstacles, and twists of fortune that might reverse your hard work and give the glory to others” (The 48 Laws of Power). Planning to the end of a campaign mitigates the possibility that you will be overwhelmed by fate’s circumstances, and it also allows you a reliable gauge on when to wisely cease your quest. “Gently guide fortune and help determine the future by thinking far ahead” (The 48 Laws of Power).Make your accomplishments seem effortless. Your actions must seem natural and executed with ease. All the toil and practice that go into them, and also all the clever tricks, must be concealed. When you act, act effortlessly, as if you could do much more. Avoid the temptation of revealing how hard you work – it only raises questions. Teach no one your tricks or they will be used against you.Control the options: get others to play with the cards you deal. Create the illusion of choice... Buy the book to continue reading! The Art of War by Sun Tzu by Sun Tzu Pdf

Although the chariots have gone and the weapons have changed, this ancient master holds his own, since he deals with fundamentals—with the influence of politics and human nature on military operations. He shows in a striking way how unchanging these principles are. From its origins in China, The Art of War traveled the world to inform the strategies of Napoleon and World War II generals. More recently, it has taken on a new life as a guide to competing successfully in business, law, politics, and sports. All of The Art of War's concepts retain their value to modern readers, from the prudence of circumventing a strong opponent and taking advantage of a weak one to the wisdom of preparedness and flexibility. Other topics include strategy, tactics, maneuvering, communications, the treatment of soldiers, and the worth of well-trained officers.

The Art of War - Sun Tzu by Sun Tzu Pdf

The Art of War is a Chinese military treatise that was written during the 6th century BC by Sun Tzu. Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it has long been praised as the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time. The Art of War is one of the oldest books on military strategy in the world. It is the first and one of the most successful works on strategy and has had a huge influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu was the first to recognize the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He taught that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through a to-do list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a competitive environment,

On The Art of War by Sun Tzu Pdf

Sun Tzŭ went on: When I say “Eyes front,” you must look straight ahead. When I say “Left turn,” you must face towards your left hand. When I say “Right turn,” you must face towards your right hand. When I say “About turn,” you must face right round towards the back. Again the girls assented. The words of command having been thus explained, he set up the halberds and battle-axes in order to begin the drill. Then, to the sound of drums, he gave the order “Right turn.” But the girls only burst out laughing. Sun Tzŭ said: If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to blame. So he started drilling them again, and this time gave the order “Left turn,” whereupon the girls once more burst into fits of laughter. Sun Tzŭ said: If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders are clear, and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers. So saying, he ordered the leaders of the two companies to be beheaded. Now the King of Wu was watching the scene from the top of a raised pavilion; and when he saw that his favourite concubines were about to be executed, he was greatly alarmed and hurriedly sent down the following message: We are now quite satisfied as to our general’s ability to handle troops. If We are bereft of these two concubines, our meat and drink will lose their savour. It is our wish that they shall not be beheaded. Sun Tzŭ replied: Having once received His Majesty’s commission to be general of his forces, there are certain commands of His Majesty which, acting in that capacity, I am unable to accept. Accordingly, he had the two leaders beheaded, and straightway installed the pair next in order as leaders in their place. When this had been done, the drum was sounded for the drill once more; and the girls went through all the evolutions, turning to the right or to the left, marching ahead or wheeling back, kneeling or standing, with perfect accuracy and precision, not venturing to utter a sound. Then Sun Tzŭ sent a messenger to the King saying: Your soldiers, Sire, are now properly drilled and disciplined, and ready for Your Majesty’s inspection. They can be put to any use that their sovereign may desire; bid them go through fire and water, and they will not disobey. But the King replied: Let our general cease drilling and return to camp. As for us, We have no wish to come down and inspect the troops. Thereupon Sun Tzŭ said: The King is only fond of words, and cannot translate them into deeds. After that, Ho Lu saw that Sun Tzŭ was one who knew how to handle an army, and finally appointed him general. In the West, he defeated the Ch‘u State and forced his way into Ying, the capital; to the north, he put fear into the States of Ch‘i and Chin, and spread his fame abroad amongst the feudal princes. And Sun Tzŭ shared in the might of the King.
