Our Skin: A First Conversation About Race by Megan Madison,Jessica Ralli Pdf

Based on the research that race, gender, consent, and body positivity should be discussed with toddlers on up, this read-aloud board book series offers adults the opportunity to begin important conversations with young children in an informed, safe, and supported way. Developed by experts in the fields of early childhood and activism against injustice, this topic-driven board book offers clear, concrete language and beautiful imagery that young children can grasp and adults can leverage for further discussion. While young children are avid observers and questioners of their world, adults often shut down or postpone conversations on complicated topics because it's hard to know where to begin. Research shows that talking about issues like race and gender from the age of two not only helps children understand what they see, but also increases self-awareness, self-esteem, and allows them to recognize and confront things that are unfair, like discrimination and prejudice. This first book in the series begins the conversation on race, with a supportive approach that considers both the child and the adult. Stunning art accompanies the simple and interactive text, and the backmatter offers additional resources and ideas for extending this discussion.

The Ultimate African Solution, Race…First Brick by CC Crawford Pdf

Ever since I came into being, I’ve often wondered about the real purpose for my existence. I observe the surrounding elements, the sun, the moon, the astronomical number of stars and galaxies, and to be a part of this universal expanse, makes me believe that there is much more to this equation, than being born, live, then die. I arrived on this earth through the African bloodline and it didn’t take long to notice the vast discrepancies amongst the races, where Africans are thoroughly overlooked on the world stage. We are underrepresented in regards to important decisions been made above our heads and disrespect of the Black race is “IN YOUR FACE” blatant. A Black person born today will endure the same fate as Black people did a hundred years ago and the system is designed to maintain Africans in the same dependent position for many generations to come. Black people in the western hemisphere has been geared to only strive for an elusive equality, when reunification with Mother Africa should be our ultimate goal to achieve racial parity. THE ULTIMATE AFRICAN SOLUTION will solve all of Black people’s problems and provide the whole African race with one hundred percent employment for this, and future generations. The negative effects that slavery and colonialism has on the African’s psyche, must be affectedly nullified first and foremost, in order to step up in race. There are numerous steps to take to overcome the mental struggles caused from the enslavement of the mind syndrome and ridding the African race of “self-hate” tops the list. Africans!!! It is imperative that we revel in each other’s successes and instead of willfully keeping ourselves down, we offer helping hands to pick each other up. Africa is due reparation for the atrocities that our ancestors had to bear, in order for the two races here in question, to be able to truly coexist as nature intended. Fighting on their behalf, to make right them being wronged throughout five hundred years of recent history and still counting, will allow our deserving ancestors to finally rest in peace. THE ULTIMATE AFRICAN SOLUTION will be achieved without any human beings losing their lives. No one have to die.

Race and Power by Gargi Bhattacharyya,John Gabriel,Stephen Small Pdf

Reviewing cutting-edge debates around racial politics and the culture and economy of globalization, this book draws together a wide range of important contemporary debates in a clear and concise way for undergraduate students. Far from concluding that racism is over, the authors contend that the forces of globalization inhabit older cultures of racial division in order to safeguard the economic interests of the privileged. Arguing that the unspoken culture of whiteness informs much that passes in the name of globalization, the book suggests that we are witnessing a reformulation of economic relations around global racisms. Alongside these shifts in economic relations, racialized identities evolve to encompass mixed heritages and mixed cultures both in personal identities and in lifestyle choices. This is one of the few texts that concentrates on the theory of race rather than politics. It looks at race in global terms, and at 'whiteness' as a part of ethnic studies.

Fatal Invention by Dorothy Roberts Pdf

An incisive, groundbreaking book that examines how a biological concept of race is a myth that promotes inequality in a supposedly “post-racial” era. Though the Human Genome Project proved that human beings are not naturally divided by race, the emerging fields of personalized medicine, reproductive technologies, genetic genealogy, and DNA databanks are attempting to resuscitate race as a biological category written in our genes. This groundbreaking book by legal scholar and social critic Dorothy Roberts examines how the myth of race as a biological concept—revived by purportedly cutting-edge science, race-specific drugs, genetic testing, and DNA databases—continues to undermine a just society and promote inequality in a supposedly “post-racial” era. Named one of the ten best black nonfiction books 2011 by AFRO.com, Fatal Invention offers a timely and “provocative analysis” (Nature) of race, science, and politics that “is consistently lucid . . . alarming but not alarmist, controversial but evidential, impassioned but rational” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). “Everyone concerned about social justice in America should read this powerful book.” —Anthony D. Romero, executive director, American Civil Liberties Union “A terribly important book on how the ‘fatal invention’ has terrifying effects in the post-genomic, ‘post-racial’ era.” —Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, professor of sociology, Duke University, and author of Racism Without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and the Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States “Fatal Invention is a triumph! Race has always been an ill-defined amalgam of medical and cultural bias, thinly overlaid with the trappings of contemporary scientific thought. And no one has peeled back the layers of assumption and deception as lucidly as Dorothy Roberts.” —Harriet A. Washington, author of and Deadly Monopolies: The Shocking Corporate Takeover of Life Itself

Race and Pedagogy by Susan R. Adams,Jamie Buffington-Adams Pdf

In the United States, higher rates of African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans fail to graduate from high schools than Caucasians. Adams and Buffington-Adams identify persistent, institutional racism as the cause, and they stress the need for teachers to acknowledge the limitations of their own cultural lenses and to recognize the validity of others’ views. Race and Pedagogy provides a retrospective glance at the authors’ experiences within the Equity Group, an organization created to provide teachers with the opportunity to talk about their own racial, cultural, and language backgrounds in order to identify, examine, and fix the failings of the current educational system. Natural, relational, and sustainable approaches are recommended which will enable educators to create classrooms and schools in which all students, regardless of racial, ethnic, or linguistic identity, are welcomed, challenged, treasured, and able to be academically successful. Book recommended for scholars of education and race studies, as well as practitioners.

Every Second Counts by Donald McRae Pdf

The dramatic race to transplant the first human heart spanned two years, three continents and five cities against a backdrop of searing tension, scientific brilliance, ethical controversy, racial strife and emotional turmoil. It culminated in a terrifying moment in the early hours of 3 December 1967 when, in a cramped operating theatre in a Cape Town hospital, Professor Chris Barnard stared into an empty cavity from which he had just removed a heart. He knew that he had only minutes left to make history and save the life of a 55-year-old man by filling the gaping hole in his chest with a heart which had just been beating inside a 25-year-old woman. Every Second Countsis the story of this gripping race to conquer the greatest of medical challenges. It also reveals the truth about the man at the centre of it all, whose turbulent life story was just as gripping. The kind of true story that would be dismissed as far-fetched if presented as fiction, it combines an utterly compelling portrait of cutting-edge science with raw human drama, and shows how the course of medicine itself was changed for ever.

The Problem of Race in the 21st Century by Thomas C. Holt Pdf

An analysis of how the conditions of race and racism in our culture have changed in our time and what this means for our future. “The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line,” W. E. B. Du Bois wrote in 1903, and his words have proven sadly prophetic. As we enter the twenty-first century, the problem remains—and yet it, and the line that defines it, have shifted in subtle but significant ways. This brief book speaks powerfully to the question of how the circumstances of race and racism have changed in our time—and how these changes will affect our future. Foremost among the book’s concerns are the contradictions and incoherence of a system that idealizes black celebrities in politics, popular culture, and sports even as it diminishes the average African-American citizen. The world of the assembly line, boxer Jack Johnson’s career, and The Birth of a Nation come under Thomas Holt’s scrutiny as he relates the malign progress of race and racism to the loss of industrial jobs and the rise of our modern consumer society. Understanding race as ideology, he describes the processes of consumerism and commodification that have transformed, but not necessarily improved, the place of black citizens in our society. As disturbing as it is enlightening, this timely work reveals the radical nature of change as it relates to race and its cultural phenomena. It offers conceptual tools and a new way to think and talk about racism as social reality. Praise for The Problem of Race in the Twenty-first Century “Debates about race often take the form of a mind game designed to establish whether or not a particular word or act is racially motivated . . . [This book] provides a compelling argument for rethinking our ideas about race.” —Frank Furedi, New Statesman “Holt rightly asserts that our racial legacy should be a point of departure—not a destination—in examining the enduring nature of racial enmity. As a nation and as individuals, we must imagine ourselves beyond, while remaining aware of, those forces that are at the root of the enmity.” —Vernon Ford, Booklist “[Readers] will benefit from Holt’s expert and careful examination of these “narratives of contradiction and incoherence” as he attempts to forecast the reigning racial ethos for the next millennium. . . . Holt writes in clear, precise prose . . . and makes an important contribution to both public and academic discussions of race and labor and their intersections in U.S. politics.” —Publishers Weekly
