Racial Integrity and Other Features of the Negro Problem (Classic Reprint) by Alexander Harvey Shannon Pdf

Excerpt from Racial Integrity and Other Features of the Negro Problem This volume is in no sense the result of any recent agitation of the race question. Its inception dates from the year 1900, and the manuscript was practically completed before the Brownsville affair, the Atlanta riots, and other less serious race conflicts aroused the country to at least a temporary realization of the existence of latent racial antagonisms which, under sufficient provocation, may at any time cause serious trouble. Advantage was, however, taken of a final revision of the manuscript to refer briefly to two or three of the more recent outbreaks because of their value as illustrations of facts and conditions under discussion. The purpose of this volume is primarily to bring before thoughtful people the moral and ethical principles involved in the amalgamation of the white and the black races. Busy men will find the gist of the volume in Chapter I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Slave Breeding by Gregory D. Smithers Pdf

For over two centuries, the topic of slave breeding has occupied a controversial place in the master narrative of American history. From nineteenth-century abolitionists to twentieth-century filmmakers and artists, Americans have debated whether slave owners deliberately and coercively manipulated the sexual practices and marital status of enslaved African Americans to reproduce new generations of slaves for profit. In this bold and provocative book, historian Gregory Smithers investigates how African Americans have narrated, remembered, and represented slave-breeding practices. He argues that while social and economic historians have downplayed the significance of slave breeding, African Americans have refused to forget the violence and sexual coercion associated with the plantation South. By placing African American histories and memories of slave breeding within the larger context of America’s history of racial and gender discrimination, Smithers sheds much-needed light on African American collective memory, racialized perceptions of fragile black families, and the long history of racially motivated violence against men, women, and children of color.

The Negro by Thomas Nelson Page Pdf

Excerpt from The Negro: The Southerner's Problem In dealing with this Question in the past, nearly every mistake that could possibly be made has been made, and to-day, after more than thirty-five years of peace and of material prosperity, the Question is apparently as live as it was over a generation ago, when national passion was allowed to usurp the province of deliberation, and the Negro was taught two fundamental errors: first, that the Southern white was inherently his enemy, and, secondly, that his race could be legislated into equality with the white.
