After Blanchot by Leslie Hill,Brian Nelson,Dimitris Vardoulakis Pdf

What does it mean to come after Blanchot? Three things, at least. First, it is to recognise that it is no longer possible to believe in an essentialist determination of literary discourse or of aesthetic experience. All this has disappeared; and there is no way back. Second, there is the question of history. What is Blanchot's legacy to us, his readers? Any name, however irreplaceably singular, is always already preceded, limited, challenged even, by the abiding anonymity of the person, animal, or thing it claims to name. Every name is necessarily impersonal, anonymous, other. Blanchot after Blanchot, then, can best be understood in the sense of that which is according to Blanchot - and that is nothing other than the infinite process of reading and rereading Blanchot: without end. Here, a third meaning to the phrase after Blanchot comes into view. For if we come after Blanchot, it is surely because Blanchot is still before us, still in front, still in the future, still to come.

Intellectuals and Power by François Laruelle Pdf

In this important new book, the leading philosopherFrançois Laruelle examines the role of intellectuals in oursocieties today, specifically with regards to criminal justice. Heargues that, rather than concerning themselves with abstractphilosophical notions like justice, truth and violence, intellectuals should focus on the human victims. Drawing on hisinfluential theory of ‘non-philosophy’, he shows how wecan submit the theorizing of intellectuals to the scrutiny of theeveryday suffering of the victims of crime. In the course of a wide-ranging discussion with Philippe Petit,Laruelle suspends the presumed authority of intellectuals bychallenging the image of the ‘dominant intellectual’exemplified by philosophers such as Sartre, Foucault, Lyotard andDebray. In place of domination, he puts forward instead a theory of‘determination’: the determined intellectual is onewhose character is conditioned by his relationship to the victim, rather than one who attempts to dominate the victim’sexperience through a process of theorizing. While philosophyconsistently takes the voice away from victims of suffering,non-philosophy is able to construct a theory of violence and crimethat gives voice to the victim. This highly original book will be essential reading for allthose interested in contemporary French philosophy and all thoseconcerned with justice in the modern world.

The Writing of Innocence by Aïcha Liviana Messina Pdf

The Writing of Innocence explores the topic of innocence and the peculiar relationship to Christianity in the writing of Maurice Blanchot. Its starting point is that innocence is not a condition relegated to a mythical past but rather one resulting from the construction of the subject in and through language. Hence, we don't lose innocence; instead, we are lost by innocence. It is an excess, not a lack. This inverted notion of innocence raises new ethical and political issues that Aïcha Liviana Messina unfolds through vigorous re-readings of a series of biblical motifs, including law, grace, and apocalypse. The closing chapter turns to the convergences and divergences between Jean-Luc Nancy's and Blanchot's understandings of the deconstruction of Christianity. With a foreword by philosopher Serge Margel, The Writing of Innocence offers a fresh perspective on Blanchot's writings in general and on his dialogue with Hegel in particular. While staging innocence in its philosophical and literary dimensions, The Writing of Innocence provides singular readings of works by Kierkegaard, Agamben, Derrida, Nancy, Camus, Hugo, and Kafka.

Understanding Derrida, Understanding Modernism by Jean-Michel Rabaté Pdf

This volume makes a significant contribution to both the study of Derrida and of modernist studies. The contributors argue, first, that deconstruction is not “modern”; neither is it “postmodern” nor simply “modernist.” They also posit that deconstruction is intimately connected with literature, not because deconstruction would be a literary way of doing philosophy, but because literature stands out as a “modern” notion. The contributors investigate the nature and depth of Derrida's affinities with writers such as Joyce, Kafka, Antonin Artaud, Georges Bataille, Paul Celan, Maurice Blanchot, Theodor Adorno, Samuel Beckett, and Walter Benjamin, among others. With its strong connection between philosophy and literary modernism, this highly original volume advances modernist literary study and the relationship of literature and philosophy.

Theory’s Autoimmunity by Zahi Zalloua Pdf

Engaging scholars from across humanistic fields grappling with the role and value of theory in our times, Theory's Autoimmunity argues for reclaiming theory's skepticism as a value. To cultivate theory's skeptical impulses is to embrace what Jacques Derrida has termed autoimmunity: a condition of openness to the outside—openness of the self, the community, democracy, or other ideals—that allows for change. Openness to change comes with risks, and the self-protective temptation to immunize oneself or one's community against these risks is strong. Yet without such risks, without openness to otherness, no encounter with the new, with difference, can ever take place. Without autoimmunity, theory becomes stagnant and programmatic, unable to receive and respond to the other or the event, to address, revise, and produce new meanings. Taking up the challenge of thinking theory as skepticism, with and against philosophy, this study turns to literature as an interlocutor, investigating the ways theory, like the literary works of Montaigne, Baudelaire, Stendhal, Morrison, or Duras, declines to put on the interpretive brakes, to stop reading at a point of understanding. Undoing and remaking itself, theory—those critical interpretive practices that revel in the creation and proliferation of meaning—becomes autoimmune.

The Personal and the Political (RLE Social Theory) by Paul Halmos Pdf

Are human misery, poverty and despair a result of personal inadequacy or social injustice? Therefore is the solution to these problems psychotherapy or political action? In one of the most important books on social work for a decade, Paul Halmos tries to resolve a dilemma which many social workers experience acutely – the conflict between a desire to help those in need and a fear that, by doing so, they merely support a political system which should, itself, be changed. Such a dilemma was highlighted during the sixties when 'casework' and personal counselling became discredited by the 'rediscovery' of widespread poverty and inequality in western society. To many the only solution seemed to be urgent and radical political action. For Professor Halmos the realities are more complex – an exclusive preoccupation with either personal or political solutions is unlikely to prove fruitful – what is needed is a dual sensitivity and balance. Yet for the author it is the political solution which carries within it the greater risk and he warns of the dangers inherent in the total politicization of social concerns. He argues that social action can become political action and ultimately political control.

Disavowal: The Metaphysics of Escape by Jake Nabasny Pdf

Self, Ego, Subject these are the terms that philosophers have used to define that indelible mark of an individual. At the same time, however, a counter-current runs through the history of philosophy and culture that challenges the primordiality and privilege of the purportedly self-identical Subject. This collection of texts from 2012-2018 traces the history of disavowal, a line of escape from subjectivity. Breaking free of the binary logic of affirmation-negation, these essays contend that a third possibility exists in the realm of human action: disavowal. Disavowal is a sly sidestepping of boolean responses, an absolute negation that nevertheless posits an alternative course of action. Positing that a refusal to participate in the current global capitalist order need not be a refusal of the world as such this collection engages in topics from Cartesian subjectivity to Sia's live performance of "Chandelier," these essays provide a timely meditation on an urgent question and illuminate a path forward.

Baroque Self-Invention and Historical Truth by Christopher Braider Pdf

In his monumental study, Christopher Braider explores the dialectical contest between history and truth that defines the period of cultural transition called the 'baroque'. For example, Annibale Carracci's portrayal of the Stoic legend of Hercules at the Crossroads departs from earlier, more static representations that depict an emblematic demigod who has already rejected the fallen path of worldly Pleasure for the upward road of heroic Virtue. Braider argues that, in breaking with tradition in order to portray a tragic soliloquist whose dominant trait is agonized indecision, Carracci joins other baroque artists, poets and philosophers in rehearsing the historical dilemma of choice itself. Carracci's picture thus becomes a framing device that illuminates phenomena as diverse as the construction of gender in baroque painting and science, the Pauline ontology of art in Caravaggio and Rembrandt, the metaphysics of baroque soliloquy and the dismantling of Cartesian dualism in Cyrano de Bergerac and Pascal.
