Radiobiology of Large Animals by David C. L. Jones,John S. Krebs,Office of Civil Defense,STANFORD RESEARCH INST MENLO PARK CALIF. Pdf

Significant accumulation of radiation injury in sheep continuously irradiated (Cobalt 60) at dose rates of less than 1 R/hr has been demonstrated. The estimated LD50/60 at 0.91 R/hr is 1277 R, while the amount of residual injury after an accumulated exposure of 727 R at 0.46 R/hr is indicative of an LD50/60 of 1957 R. Increasing the dose rate to 3.4 R/hr, with simultaneous reduction in exposure time so that incremental weekly doses (140 R) remain the same as at 0.91 R/hr, results in a significant lowering of the estimated LD50/60 to 1054 R. Combined analysis of previous results from a kinetic standpoint indicates that counts of circulating leucocytes in the sheep are not primarily determined by the size of the parent stemcell population. In addition, it has been found that hematologic measures in the sheep tend to show marked departures from the normal distribution. Finally, radioactive tracer studies have shown that the total bone-marrow cellularity per kilogram of body weight is similar in mice and in sheep. (Author).

Mechanisms in Radiobiology by Maurice Errera,Arne Forssberg Pdf

Mechanisms in Radiobiology, Volume II: Multicellular Organisms presents the development of radiobiology, which has run parallel with the advancement of biology. This book discusses the fundamental aspects of radiobiology in connection with the therapeutic use of X-rays in medicine. Organized into five chapters, this book begins with an overview of radiation effects on embryonic and adult organisms, particularly in mammals. This text then discusses the immunological processes in irradiated organisms. Other chapters consider the mechanisms of action of protective and sensitizing agents and examine the primary or secondary effects of the irradiation on the various organs. This book discusses as well the experimental possibilities of improving the recovery of irradiated mammals. The final chapter deals with the reactions of living organisms after a damaging dose of ionizing radiation, which is determined by a variety of biological and physical factors. This book is a valuable resource for radiobiologists, pathologists, scientists, physicists, clinicians, and research workers.

Advances in Radiation Biology by John T. Lett,Howard Adler Pdf

Advances in Radiation Biology, Volume 9, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in radiation biology. The book contains nine chapters and begins with a study on the ways in which physical and chemical agents might trigger "regulatory dysfunction" and how these agents might interact with each other. This is followed by separate chapters on the mechanisms underlying changes in vascular function after doses of radiation in the therapeutic range and their role in the development of late effects in normal tissues; the future of hypoxic cell sensitizers in the clinical setting; DNA strand break formation by ionizing radiation; and major pathways which result in radiation-induced loss of cellular proliferative capacity. Subsequent chapters deal with the solid-state radiation chemistry of DNA; radiosensitivity of proliferating mammalian cells; the use of microwave/radiofrequency energy cancer treatment; and the decline of basic radiobiology.
