X-Radiography of Textiles, Dress and Related Objects by Sonia O'Connor,Mary Brooks Pdf

X-radiography of textile objects reveals hidden features as well as unexpected components and materials. This non-destructive technique throws light on construction, manufacturing techniques, use, wear, repair, patterns of decay and dating. X-radiography improves artefact documentation and interpretation as well as guiding conservation approaches by enhancing understanding. This book explores techniques for X-raying textiles. It describes approaches to image interpretation and explains how, through digitisation and digital image manipulation, maximum information can be realised. Case studies include archaeological, ecclesiastical and ethnographic textiles, items of dress and accessories, upholstery, quilts, embroideries, dolls and toys. Museum professionals will find this stimulating book an essential guide for developing their own practice or commissioning textile X-radiographs.

Sha'ar Hagolan by Yosef Garfinkel,Michele A. Miller,David Ben-Shlomo Pdf

This is the second of the final reports on the excavation of the Neolithic site of Sha'ar Hagolan in the Jordan Valley of Israel, which presents and analyzes the architecture and stratigraphy of the site. Sha'ar Hagolan was a major settlement in numerous respects: its large size (20 hectares), the earliest known appearance of the courtyard house concept in its large dwelling complexes, and its planned layout with an organized network of passageways, including straight main streets that were regularly resurfaced. In addition, the well uncovered at the site, one of the oldest in the world, reveals sophisticated hydrological technology. These revolutionary discoveries have completely altered our understanding of the 6th millennium BCE and shed new light on the rise of urban concepts in the ancient Near East.

Original - Copy - Fake? by Ernst Pernicka,Silke von Berswordt-Wallrabe Pdf

English summary: It is not always easy to decide whether an object of art or an antiquity is authentic or not. On the one hand, there is a gradual transition from "improving" restoration to outright deceit. On the other hand, the methods applied in the production of fakes become ever more sophisticated so that fakes are sometimes incorporated even in respected and well-known collections. This situation is even more unfortunate as these collections represent points of reference for further stylistic investigations and comparisons. Bochum-based foundation Situation Kunst owns a substantial collection of West African art which has been the subject of controversial opinions concerning its authenticity. The questions posed in the title of this book gave rise to an exchange of positions and experiences between art historians, ethnologists, scientists and restorers at a meeting at Ruhr-University Bochum in February 2007. The results of this memorable symposium are collected in this volume.
