Railway Transportation in South Asia by Saptarshi Mitra,Sumana Bandyopadhyay,Stabak Roy,Tomaz Ponce Dentinho Pdf

This book discusses policy instruments for sustainable infrastructure developments. Railways are one of the most important developmental instruments of a region, province, or country. They play a crucial role in economic development, urban growth, urban mobility, regional susceptibility, market integration, and world trade. Railways are an integral part of regional and urban development, both in terms of freight and passenger transport. By offering case studies from various regions and cities in South Asia, this book examines the evolution of railway transportation and the impact of these infrastructure projects on regional and urban development. It examines the interactions between evolving infrastructures and competing demands and considers the negative and positive externalities of railway transportation for people, places, and locations. The contributions analyze issues such as network infrastructure planning and technological development, passenger mobility and satisfaction, vulnerability to environmental impacts, and cross-border trade.

Railway Planning, Management, and Engineering by V Profillidis Pdf

In a rapidly changing world, with increasing competition in all sectors of transportation, railways are currently restructuring their planning, management, and technology. As commercial and pricing policies change and new methods of organization are introduced, a more entrepreneurial spirit is required. At the same time, new high-speed tracks are being constructed and old tracks are being renewed, magnetic levitation trains are in operation, hyperloop systems are being planned, high-comfort rolling stock vehicles are being introduced, logistics and combined transport are being developed. Awareness of environmental issues and the search for greater safety attribute a new role to the railways within the transportation system. Meanwhile, methods of analysis have evolved significantly, principally due to computer applications, the internet revolution, satellite technologies, and artificial intelligence, all of which offer new ways of thinking about and addressing old problems. Railway Planning, Management, and Engineering aims to fulfill the need for a new scientific approach for railways. It is intended to be of use to railway planners, managers, economists, engineers, and students in engineering, transportation, economics, and management. The book is divided into three parts, which deal successively with planning, management, track, rolling stock, safety, and the environment.

Handbook of Optimization in the Railway Industry by Ralf Borndörfer,Torsten Klug,Leonardo Lamorgese,Carlo Mannino,Markus Reuther,Thomas Schlechte Pdf

This book promotes the use of mathematical optimization and operations research methods in rail transportation. The editors assembled thirteen contributions from leading scholars to present a unified voice, standardize terminology, and assess the state-of-the-art. There are three main clusters of articles, corresponding to the classical stages of the planning process: strategic, tactical, and operational. These three clusters are further subdivided into five parts which correspond to the main phases of the railway network planning process: network assessment, capacity planning, timetabling, resource planning, and operational planning. Individual chapters cover: Simulation Capacity Assessment Network Design Train Routing Robust Timetabling Event Scheduling Track Allocation Blocking Shunting Rolling Stock Crew Scheduling Dispatching Delay Propagation

Public Transport by Peter R. White Pdf

Public Transport is a comprehensive textbook covering the planning of all public transport systems (bus, coach, rail, taxi and domestic air travel) in Britain and other countries with similar systems. The term ‘planning’ is used both in the context of local authority and central government roles and in the work done by transport operators for example, network structures, vehicle type selection. In addition to the various types of transport, the differing needs of the urban, rural and long distance markets are examined. This restructured new edition gives greater emphasis to service quality and marketing issues as well as covering recent changes in legislation, statistics and research findings. Public Transport is of particular interest to transport planners in local authorities and consultancies, managers in transport operations, as well as undergraduates and MSc students of transport planning and those studying for the membership examinations of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.

Railways, Urban Development and Town Planning in Britain: 1948–2008 by Russell Haywood Pdf

This book provides a critical overview of the relationships between planning and railway management and development during the key period in the 20th Century when the railway was in public ownership: 1948-94. It assesses the strength of the relationships when working in collaboration with the private sector. The book then focuses on the interplay between planning and railway since privatization in 1994 and points to best practice for the future in institutional structures and policy development to secure improved outcomes.

An Introduction to Rail Transport Planning by Donovan Muddle Pdf

This textbook attempts to details in depth the various concepts needed for the planning of rail transport. This textbook represents perhaps the first attempt anywhere to dfescribe in detail the processes involved in transport planning. The book is a combination of discussion on engineering systems, network analysis, economics, and detailed analysis of specific engineering systems. The first two parts of the book are devoted to an extensive discussion of the different engineering systems needed for the creation of a rail system. Engineering systems such as traction power, signalling, communications, and passenger information are discussed. There is also much discussion on the economics of rail transport planning. Discussed is the different methods of estimating demand for rail services, and elasticities of demand. The book also contains a large chapter on signalling headways, where the maximum possible frequency of trains is discussed. Formulas are developped to calculate the minimum headway. High Speed Rail is discussed in depth. Many examples are given of HSR systems, and the conventional wisdom for what constitutes a "good" HSR system is explained. The approach in the book is to provide as many examples as possible to explain the strengths and weaknesses of different rail systems. Most of the examples focus on South East Asia, or on Australia. Freight is also discussed.
