Her Own Hero by Wendy L Rouse Pdf

The surprising roots of the self-defense movement and the history of women’s empowerment. At the turn of the twentieth century, women famously organized to demand greater social and political freedoms like gaining the right to vote. However, few realize that the Progressive Era also witnessed the birth of the women’s self-defense movement. It is nearly impossible in today’s day and age to imagine a world without the concept of women’s self defense. Some women were inspired to take up boxing and jiu-jitsu for very personal reasons that ranged from protecting themselves from attacks by strangers on the street to rejecting gendered notions about feminine weakness and empowering themselves as their own protectors. Women’s training in self defense was both a reflection of and a response to the broader cultural issues of the time, including the women’s rights movement and the campaign for the vote. Perhaps more importantly, the discussion surrounding women’s self-defense revealed powerful myths about the source of violence against women and opened up conversations about the less visible violence that many women faced in their own homes. Through self-defense training, women debunked patriarchal myths about inherent feminine weakness, creating a new image of women as powerful and self-reliant. Whether or not women consciously pursued self-defense for these reasons, their actions embodied feminist politics. Although their individual motivations may have varied, their collective action echoed through the twentieth century, demanding emancipation from the constrictions that prevented women from exercising their full rights as citizens and human beings. This book is a fascinating and comprehensive introduction to one of the most important women’s issues of all time. This book will provoke good debate and offer distinct responses and solutions.

In Defense of Ourselves by Linda Tschirhart Sanford,Ann Fetter Pdf

"In Defense of Ourselves is a book that will make women feel safer on the streets or when home alone. As a practical guide to help women cope with, and hopefully avoid, attack of any sort, this book deals with emotional readiness (how to overcome feeling helpless or being polite when someone makes an unwelcome advance) as well as the physical ability to defend ourselves. For example, the authors cover voice and body stance, and they provide physical exercises (with step-by-step instructions and accompanying photographs) that you can do to be prepared for any attacker. But nowhere does this book say that you have to fight back or react in a specific way in every case - it simply gives you the knowledge and confidence to evaluate each situation and respond intelligently."--Back cover.

Against Rape by Andra Medea,Kathleen Thompson Pdf

Against Rape is one of the earliest texts on a delicate subject, a polemic-cum-survival manual as well a thoughtful study. In 1975 it broke the silence on rape, not only in the U.S., but around the world. It was the first book to look at the causes and patterns of rape in order to reduce its power in the minds and lives of women, enable women and men to begin to change a society that engendered it, and help women avoid and/or survive the trauma of rape. It is also a realistic and practical book, explaining how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations and giving instructions on various self-defense techniques and advice on what to do in the event of rape. It also considers the act of rape in context, discussing why it happens, what forms it can take, how it affects the victims and who the rapists are. It has been widely used in rape crisis centers and women's studies courses and was the primary text for Chimera, Inc.'s self-defense courses for women for more than a decade. It has had a major impact on the way our society deals with this crime.

Watching Rape by Sarah Projansky Pdf

Looking at popular culture from 1980 to the present, feminism appears to be "over": that is, according to popular critics we are in an era of "postfeminism" in which feminism has supposedly already achieved equality for women. Not so, says Sarah Projansky. In Watching Rape, Projansky undermines this complacent view in her fascinating and thorough analysis of depictions of rape in U.S. film, television, and independent video. Through a cultural studies analysis of such films as Thelma and Louise, Daughters of the Dust, and She's Gotta Have It, and television shows like ER, Ally McBeal, Beverly Hills 90210, and various made-for-tv movies, Projansky challenges us to see popular culture as a part of our everyday lives and practices, and to view that culture critically. How have media defined rape and feminism differently over time? How do popular narratives about rape also communicate ideas about gender, race, class, nationality, and sexuality? And, what is the future of feminist politics, theory, and criticism with regard to issues of sexual violence, postfeminism, and popular media? The first study to address the relationship between rape and postfeminism, and one of the most detailed and thorough analyses of rape in 25 years, Watching Rape is a crucial contribution to contemporary feminism.

The Ethics of Self-Defense by Christian Coons,Michael Weber Pdf

The fifteen new essays collected in this volume address questions concerning the ethics of self-defense, most centrally when and to what extent the use of defensive force, especially lethal force, can be justified. Scholarly interest in this topic reflects public concern stemming from controversial cases of the use of force by police, and military force exercised in the name of defending against transnational terrorism. The contributors pay special attention to determining when a threat is liable to defensive harm, though doubts about this emphasis are also raised. The legitimacy of so-called "stand your ground" policies and laws is also addressed. This volume will be of great interest to readers in moral, political, and legal philosophy.

The South African Women's Guide to Self-Defence by Sanette Smit Pdf

The combination of an increasing crime rate and staggering rape and gender-based violence statistics in South Africa has clearly defined the need for a book that not only empowers and encourages women to acknowledge their capabilities, but shows them how to defend themselves. The South African Woman's Guide to Self-Defence is such a book. In this book you will learn how to: identify potentially dangerous situations and how you can avoid them; identify patterns/styles of attack and understand the best defence response for each pattern; identify opportunities to defend yourself should you be compromised; identify and use vulnerable body target areas onto which to apply your techniques; identify and change your own limiting beliefs and mental programming concerning your rights and capabilities; implement easy, yet highly effective self-defence techniques. Aimed at every woman, regardless of fitness level, age or physical ability, the authoritative text, step-by-step instructions and 250 full-colour photographs clearly demonstrate the various techniques and make learning self-defence easy. Author Sanette Smit - an 8th Dan Black Belt in karate and South Africa's leading self-defence expert - has, along with her team, empowered more than 350,000 women and girls in these techniques during the course of her 30-year, self-defence career. "Yes, there is something women can do to drastically increase their chances of preventing a rape attack; and, no, women are not as weak and helpless as they think they are - they simply need to be taught how to defend themselves. This includes adopting the respective mind shift necessary for effective self-defence." - Sanette Smit "All indications are that a woman who can defend herself and make informed choices in difficult situations is better placed to avoid rape than one who is not. Sanette Smit has a long history of empowering women to take control, defend themselves and make informed choices." - Carol Bower, Past Director of Rape Crisis Cape Town "All indications are that a woman who can defend herself and make informed choices in difficult situations is better placed to avoid rape than one who is not. Sanette Smit has a long history of empowering women to take control, defend themselves and make informed choices." - Carol Bower, Past Director of Rape Crisis Cape Town "... the time has come for women and men to take collective responsibility to end the scourge of violence against women and ensure that women are free. To achieve significant change, there needs to be a fundamental shift in attitudes and behavior, which will take time. While we work towards this change, women are encouraged to empower themselves. The one thing we can do is to become aware of how to prevent rape and assault happening to us as individuals. Sanette Smit has a passion for empowering women to take control, make informed choices and become aware of how to defend themselves in various situations." - Chantel Cooper, Past Director of Rape Crisis Cape Town "After attending one of Smitti's [Sanette Smit's] brilliant self-defence workshops, I felt empowered as a woman, more aware and more confident in averting certain dangerous situations. While teaching self-defence, Smitti reminds women of their inner strength and beauty, and urges them to realize their powers and identify those important intuitive feelings that they so often ignore." - Kathy Rath, Rape survivor

Escape Being Raped Or Attacked by Ted H. Gordon Pdf

Superseded by newer, expanded, and revised SECOND edition. Three-quarters of rape and attack prevention is defusing a situation before it arises. You should know how to mentally and physically react to some aggressive idiot who will not stop when you say "stop." You have to say "no" to a potential attacker in an unambiguous manner so there is no mixed message. There are those attackers who hide in bushes and jump out and grab you before you are even aware they are there. To them, there is no discussion, and your first move is destroying their attacking and escaping. Conversely, you also have to be aware of the date rape drugs (like GHB and roofies) and know how to protect your glass at parties. You need to know what you can do to determine if someone is following you on foot or in a car, and what you can do about it. If you learn to be vigilant and use common sense, much of the time you can prevent a situation from escalating. Only as a last resort should you ever have to use ju-jitsu or karate self-defense. But, in those situations, you do have to know how to protect yourself and how to escape from your attacker. You actually have the advantage. Your attacker does not know that you know self-defense. Most importantly, you do not have the "win" the fight. All you need to do is be able to temporarily distract or disable him enough to allow you run to safety. With the knowledge in this book you should be able to walk, act, and protect yourself from most dangers, and if you are attacked how to escape without injury. You need knowledge to carry yourself self-confidently and present a calmness and demeanor that suggest you are not afraid. So much of rape is about control and power. When you can defend yourself, that control and power transfers to you.

Real Knockouts by Martha McCaughey Pdf

An examination of women's self-defense culture and its relationship to feminism. I was once a frightened feminist. So begins Martha McCaughey's odyssey into the dynamic world of women's self- defense, a culture which transforms women involved with it and which has equally profound implications for feminist theory and activism. Unprecedented numbers of American women are learning how to knock out, maim, even kill men who assault them. Sales of mace and pepper spray have skyrocketed. Some 14 million women own handguns. From behind the scenes at gun ranges, martial arts dojos, fitness centers offering Cardio Combat, and in padded attacker courses like Model Mugging, Real Knockouts demonstrates how self-defense trains women out of the femininity that makes them easy targets for men's abuse. And yet much feminist thought, like the broader American culture, seems deeply ambivalent about women's embrace of violence, even in self-defense. Investigating the connection between feminist theory and women physically fighting back, McCaughey found self-defense culture to embody, literally, a new brand of feminism.

How to Fight Back and Win by Judith Fein Pdf

Former military intelligence officer Fein has a black belt in tae kwan do. She brings her own self-defense program to readers through step-by-step lessons illustrated by photos that demonstrate stances and moves. She covers the basics of physical self-defense and of preventing rape and sexual assault, escaping from multiple assailants, and defending against armed attackers. As important as the physical techniques, she says, are the psychological elements involved (as in both fear of fighting and successfully fighting), the legal aspects of self-defense, preventing domestic violence, being protected at home and on the road, and the other skills women need to be streetwise. Key to her whole presentation is seeing self-defense skills as survival skills and that self-defense begins with self-esteem. As an increasing number of women come to fear assault and seek freedom and empowerment in the face of its threat, Fein's manual is sure to find a large audience. - Whitney Scott-
