After the death of her father, Lonely Planet writer Virginia Jealous travels across the world to document the life of his obsession – the scandalous 20th century poet Laurence Hope – in a unique blend of memoir and travelogue. John Jealous was sixty, and poet Laurence Hope had already been dead for eighty years when he became incomprehensibly obsessed with her. After his death, his daughter Virginia finds herself drawn into the extraordinary life and work of Laurence Hope – aka Violet Nicolson – who killed herself in Madras in 1904. Laurence Hope’s poetry, with its sexually adventurous themes, thrilled and scandalised the Empire in India and beyond. In the first years of the twentieth century she was the most famous poet in the world; by World War II she was forgotten. Following in the footsteps of her father, Virginia travels across Australia, India, England, Spain and China, tracking Laurence Hope’s life, and finding answers to, and further mysteries in, her father’s unfinished business. A unique blend of poetry, memoir and travelogue, Rapture’s Roadway untangles truth and lies and, where that’s not possible, celebrates the enigma of not knowing.
There has always been a romance around ocean liners, but this book looks behind the romance to show the reality of travelling the oceans of the world. The book starts with the first scheduled transatlantic crossings in the age of sail, then moves on through the development of the steamers and ends in the present day, when ocean liners have given way to airliners. All aspects of the subject are discussed. The experience of travelling by sea varied enormously from the luxury of first-class travel to the often brutal conditions endured by immigrants. Ship design developed in the race between competing companies to provide the most powerful ships. But while technology came into the fundamental design, when it came to décor, for many of the great liners the interiors looked back with a romanticised view of the past. It is not always realised that a great liner might have almost as many crew as passengers, and this looks at all those who kept the ships running, from the black gang in the engine room to the captain on the bridge. The result is a rounded view of what it meant to travel on some of the greatest ships ever built.
The final book of the Bible, Revelation prophesies the ultimate judgement of mankind in a series of allegorical visions, grisly images and numerological predictions. According to these, empires will fall, the "Beast" will be destroyed and Christ will rule a new Jerusalem. With an introduction by Will Self.
The Origin of Our Origins by Emerson Thomas McMullen B.S. M.S. M.A. Ph.D. Pdf
There is no conflict between the Bible and science that is evidence-based. The conflict is between belief in the Biblical Worldview and belief in a non-biblical worldview. If a claim about nature is not testable or observable and then confirmable, it is not science. Evolution requires belief. In his On the Origin of Species (1859), Charles Darwin wrote about his “belief in the transmutation of species” (p302), that “The theory of natural selection is grounded on . . . belief” (p320), and that he believed we descended from one common ancestor (p484). Darwin believed in evolution because he had no evidence. He admitted that “the whole volume is one long argument” (p459). Observations show that biological change is limited and research indicates that evolution is/was not by chance mutations. Additionally, chance does not cause anything. It is a philosophical term and may not even exist. Finally, experiments have repeatedly shown that life does not arise from non-life. Similarly, we did not descend from stardust either. Besides violating the principle of cause and effect, astronomical discoveries are proving that the Big Bang is science fiction. Like evolution, chance, and life from non-life, the Big Bang has to be believed.
