Your Cabin in the Woods by Conrad E Meinecke Pdf

2015 Reprint of 1945 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. If you want to build your own fireplace, or your own cabin in the woods with its wood-burning fireplaces, this book contains cabin plans and detailed instructions you will need. Written for the novice, it not only tells about cabins and fireplaces and how to build them, but about back garden fireplaces, designs for rustic furniture, out-door cooking menus, gateways, guard-rails and fences. It is filled with philosophy and wisdom on living in the out-of-doors. Meinecke was a well-known master cabin builder and do-it-yourself man. He not only wrote the book, but he printed the original edition himself on a small press in his own home and bound it in craft cloth laced together with stout cord. Still considered a classic work.

The Log Cabin by Alison K. Hoagland Pdf

For roughly a century, the log cabin occupied a central and indispensable role in the rapidly growing United States. Although it largely disappeared as a living space, it lived on as a symbol of the settling of the nation. In her thought-provoking and generously illustrated new book, Alison Hoagland looks at this once-common dwelling as a practical shelter solution--easy to construct, built on the frontier’s abundance of trees, and not necessarily meant to be permanent--and its evolving place in the public memory. Hoagland shows how the log cabin was a uniquely adaptable symbol, responsive to the needs of the cultural moment. It served as the noble birthplace of presidents, but it was also seen as the basest form of housing, accommodating the lowly poor. It functioned as a paragon of domesticity, but it was also a basic element in the life of striving and wandering. Held up as a triumph of westward expansion, it was also perceived as a building type to be discarded in favor of more civilized forms. In the twentieth century, the log cabin became ingrained in popular culture, serving as second homes and motels, as well as restaurants and shops striking a rustic note. The romantic view of the past, combined with the log cabin’s simplicity, solidity, and compatibility with nature, has made it an enduring architectural and cultural icon. The Log Cabin: An Illustrated History by Andrew Belonsky Pdf

“A stunning, image-driven examination of the "uniquely American symbol of home and hearth” —BuzzFeed (Books Gift Guide) "Lavishly illustrated, this book by a Cincinnati native tells the story of America through its iconic structure — the log cabin. In lively prose," —Columbus Dispatch "The perfect holiday gift for grown-ups who graduated past Lincoln Logs," —Mother News Network Like a wooden security blanket that Americans reach for when times get tough, the log cabin has endured as a uniquely American symbol of home and hearth. This strain of cabin fever is no fleeting trend: It has struck at regular intervals since the early 1900s, when log cabin vacations first became an option for an increasingly mobile America. Now the cozy cabin aesthetic is found, like a collective fantasy, in every corner of our national culture. But how did it all begin? This is an image-driven history of log cabins in America. Exploring the log cabin’s hidden past, this book draws on colonial diaries and journalistic accounts, as well as paintings, illustrations, and graphics to show how the log cabin—once derided as a poor immigrant’s hovel—became an American institution and a modern ambition. Bursting with quirk, charm, and fascinating trivia, The Log Cabin is the perfect companion for cabin dwellers, vacationers, and daydreamers alike.

How to Build A Log Cabin by Becky's Homestead Pdf

Everyone who watches Becky's Homestead knows I built my log cabin kit all by myself, and I love, love, love my cabin! The question I get the most from my viewers is, "Who did you buy your log cabin kit from, and what do I need to know before I buy my own log cabin kit?" That's why I want to help people figure it out with my simple little book "How To Build A Log Cabin".I wrote this book to be a Soup to Nuts Buyers Guide for anyone who wants to build a log cabin. Before you go out and buy your log package, see if you can answer these questions:What's the difference between stamped and non-stamped blueprints? Do the doors and windows come with the kit? What keeps the logs from warping and bending? How much does a kit really cost after you add on the extras? Can I assemble my kit myself or should I hire a contractor? What's the difference between a log cabin and a log home? What are the pros and cons of log cabins compared to a normal house? What kind of wood makes the best logs? How do I get water, electricity, and sewer connected to my cabin? And, How do I get a permit for building a log cabin kit?If you don't know the answers to these questions you'll be at a disadvantage when your dealing with the log cabin kit companies. That's why my book answers all those questions and more. Now, let me tell you, there are a lot of things the log cabin sales people don't tell you, and if you walk in there unprepared you might be sorry."How To Build A Log Cabin" is a buyers guide for anyone who dreams of successfully building their own cabin like I did. Building a Log Cabin in Alaska in Four Months by Charles Underwood Pdf

This book should prove most helpful as a "how to" guide for a man working alone to build a strong, yet simple log cabin made to last. It can be a log cabin that a man can be proud to call his home or for a getaway home away from home on the weekend. I built the 13 by 41 foot cabin shell, including cutting down the trees and peeling off the bark, in three months while camping out in a tent. Cutting down the trees and pilling off the bark took more than half of the time in completing the shell of the cabin. It was hard work, but by using the trees on my property I saved money and it gave me a more satisfying feeling of accomplishment as I lived my dream. After about three months work the cabin was up and we moved from our tents into the cabin, however, the electrical wiring, well and plumbing, septic system, interior walls, chimney, and 8 by 28 foot add-on, which are covered in varying details (less on the wiring and plumbing) in this book, were worked on as I got the time and money. Overall, to complete the cabin, it took about four to five months time. The 757 square foot cabin was completed in about four months by working long hours, six days a week. The long camping experience was an ordeal for my wife, but my son and I enjoyed it. We thank God for His help and guidance through it all. The plans contained in this book are designed to allow a man working alone to build a cabin in a short time that will last a life time. I include an additional chapter about building a pergola type patio cover out of red cedar. 48 pictures are included in this book. Happy trails!
