Living with Bad Surroundings by Sverker Finnström Pdf

Since 1986, the Acholi people of northern Uganda have lived in the crossfire of a violent civil war, with the Lord’s Resistance Army and other groups fighting the Ugandan government. Acholi have been murdered, maimed, and driven into displacement. Thousands of children have been abducted and forced to fight. Many observers have perceived Acholiland and northern Uganda to be an exception in contemporary Uganda, which has been celebrated by the international community for its increased political stability and particularly for its fight against AIDS. These observers tend to portray the Acholi as war-prone, whether because of religious fanaticism or intractable ethnic hatreds. In Living with Bad Surroundings, Sverker Finnström rejects these characterizations and challenges other simplistic explanations for the violence in northern Uganda. Foregrounding the narratives of individual Acholi, Finnström enables those most affected by the ongoing “dirty war” to explain how they participate in, comprehend, survive, and even resist it. Finnström draws on fieldwork conducted in northern Uganda between 1997 and 2006 to describe how the Acholi—especially the younger generation, those born into the era of civil strife—understand and attempt to control their moral universe and material circumstances. Structuring his argument around indigenous metaphors and images, notably the Acholi concepts of good and bad surroundings, he vividly renders struggles in war and the related ills of impoverishment, sickness, and marginalization. In this rich ethnography, Finnström provides a clear-eyed assessment of the historical, cultural, and political underpinnings of the civil war while maintaining his focus on Acholi efforts to achieve “good surroundings,” viable futures for themselves and their families.

Taking Action, Saving Lives by Kristin Shrader-Frechette Pdf

In the United States alone, industrial and agricultural toxins account for about 60,000 avoidable cancer deaths annually. Pollution-related health costs to Americans are similarly staggering: $13 billion a year from asthma, $351 billion from cardiovascular disease, and $240 billion from occupational disease and injury. Most troubling, children, the poor, and minorities bear the brunt of these health tragedies. Why, asks Kristin Shrader-Frechette, has the government failed to protect us, and what can we do about it? In this book, at once brilliant and accessible, Shrader-Frechette reveals how politicians, campaign contributors, and lobbyists--and their power over media, advertising, and public relations--have conspired to cover up environmental disease and death. She also shows how science and regulators themselves are frequently "captured" by well-funded polluters and special interests. But most important, the author puts both the blame--and the solution--on the shoulders of ordinary citizens. She argues that everyone, especially in a democracy, has a duty to help prevent avoidable environmental deaths, to remain informed about, and involved in, public-health and environmental decision-making. Toward this end, she outlines specific, concrete ways in which people can contribute to life-saving reforms, many of them building on recommendations of the American Public Health Association. As disturbing as it is, Shrader-Frechette's message is ultimately hopeful. Calling for a new "democratic revolution," she reminds us that while only a fraction of the early colonists supported the American Revolution, that tiny group managed to change the world. Her book embodies the conviction that we can do the same for environmental health, particularly if citizens become the change they seek. "Timely, accessible, and written with enviable clarity and passion. A distinguished philosopher sounds an ethical call to arms to prevent illness and death from pollution." --Sheila Jasanoff, Harvard University "Influential and impressive. A must-read." --Nicholas A. Ashford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology "By one of America's foremost philosophers and public intellectuals; immensely readable, courageous, often startling, insightful." --Richard Hiskes, University of Connecticut "Like Rachel Carson's Silent Spring--brilliant, brave." --Sylvia Hood Washington, University of Illinois, Chicago "A blistering account of how advocacy must be brought to bear on issues of justice and public health." -- Jeffrey Kahn, University of Minnesota "No other author can so forcefully bring together ethical analysis, government policy, and environmental science. Outstanding." --Colleen Moore, University of Wisconsin

You work your way through the long school of Paradise attainment by serving as teachers to those pupils just behind you in the scale of progression." — The Urantia Book, page 339 A THRESHOLD TO ENLIGHTENMENT The first step for each of you is to calm your mind. Caught Between Two Spiritual Worlds by Reverend Harold A. Vieux Pdf

This is a true story, a series of events that transpired in my life which I deemed necessary to expose and by so doing alert others to vigilance. Naturally, the subject matter is sensitive both for me and all parties involved. I can never discount the relevance of demons, deny their reality and their harassing ways. If and when I was to do so, I would magnify the role of human agents. Frequently, even mature Christians underestimate the magnitude of the spiritual warfare enlisted in from the time of the new birth. We are in a severe struggle, persistently and subtly driven by powerful, spiritual opposing forces beyond our comprehension. Often we rely on human resources and fail to use the spiritual source available to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. I fell in the fourth generation of my maternal fore-parents lineage to suffer unnecessary heartbreaking consequences because of spiritual ignorance. Since I came to see the light of Jesus Christ, I made up my mind to loose all yokes of bondage over my generation and the ones to come after me should Christ tarry. I now know demonic spirits are to be kept afar and never be trusted. Even though at times through subtlety we may be deceived to think that certain spirits work for the good and well-being of a person, such deception should be seen as a trap, a means of securing the individual into a mesh. Sooner or later, such individual will be caught unaware and conquered. It should never be a surprise how the Devil, the starch enemy of the saints, will use anyone, foe and often those who would be considered ally, to win a person over to cause him to fall. Read on and enjoy this treat to your spiritual health!

Consider What the Angels Say by George DeVangelos Pdf

Our world now and throughout history has had conflicting accounts of the nature of God and man's relationship to this cosmic deity. These conflicts have wrecked havoc within the societies of humanity to dangerous levels. Mankind has relied upon his sacred and canonized scriptures to provide doctrinal absolutes for his religions, but these absolutes differ and therefore cannot possibly all be correct, at least in specific contexts. However, there exist a very mysterious book circulating worldwide that does have specific, detailed, and consistent answers to all of our questions. The origin of this book is steeped in mystery and no human author has claimed ownership to its teachings which cover 2097 pages of intensive reading and exhaustive information. This book is known as the Urantia Book and has been placed in the public domain. The Urantia Book takes us from the conceptual locations within our segregated religious heritage and correctively re-calibrates our various belief systems which have been unavoidably limited and distorted by our world-views throughout human history. After its conceptual enhancements and adjustments, the Urantia Book enlarges such informational details into an elevation of more exact universal levels of perception as an advancement of cosmic truth. "Consider What the Angels Say" takes this expansive and intricately complicated book and presents a timesaving presentation of its teachings and gently correlates it with Christian doctrines and other religions as well as human philosophy and knowledge. In this book, the following questions will be answered. What exactly is God and how does this phenomenon relate to infinite reality, the time and space cosmos, other spiritual beings, and our world? Exactly what is the Godhead Trinity and why is it a necessary foundation for the existence of universal reality? What are angels and spiritual principalities? What are their levels and types, and how do they interface and interact between supernatural and human situations? How does the historical Jesus Christ fit into the spiritual dimensions of reality. How is he related to the one eternal God and how is Jesus an integral part of our soul salvation? How was man physically created and what accounts for the variances in human biological races and how does this correlate with the theory of evolution? What is the nature of the human soul and how is it translated into the eternal spiritual realities and how does it exist beyond death and what is its destiny? How did mankind come to develop and organize his cultures and what part did supernatural spiritual beings play in the formulations of man's religious doctrines? Why has there been so much tragedy, hardship, war, disease, and social discord throughout our history? What is the nature of sin and why does evil even exist. Something is not right, what went wrong? In all of the versions of religious theologies and doctrines worldwide, no one book explains the details of these universal mysteries as completely and systematically as the Urantia Book, it is truly a gift from the angels. Consider What the Angels Say is a concentrated effort forged from the heartfelt love and concern for humanity to introduce this majestic angelic book to all who are able to receive and benefit form its supernatural information.

The Grand Grimoire with the Great Clavicle of Solomon by King Salomon Pdf

" This Book is so rare and sought after in our country it has been called, by our Rabbis, the true Great Work. They were the ones who le us this precious original that many charlatans uselessly wanted to counterfeit, attempting to imitate the truth that they never found, in order to swindle ingenuous individuals who have faith in initial encounters without seeking their true Source. This manuscript has been copied from various writings of the great King Solomon. This great king spent all of his days in the most difficult search and in the most obscure and unexpected secrets. In the end he succeeded in all of his endeavors and he reached his goal of penetrating the most profound dwelling of the spirits, whom he obliged to obey him by the power of his talisman, the clavicle, since who else but this powerful genius would have dared bring to light the thundering words that he made use of to constrain the rebel spirits to his will, having penetrated up to the celestial beings to learn more thoroughly the secrets and the powerful words that have the force of a terrible and respected God?..."

Latin American Rebels and the United States, 1806äóñ1822 by Gordon S. Brown Pdf

When separatist revolts erupted in Spain’s American colonies in the early 1800s, opinion in the United States was undecided as to what position to take. Proximity and America’s own anti-colonial ethos favored sympathy with the rebel cause, yet U.S. strategic interests during the tumultuous Napoleonic Wars dictated a policy of neutrality. When representatives of the rebel provinces came to the U.S. seeking support, arms or recognition, and even launched armed assaults on Spanish territory and shipping from U.S. soil, American opinion split sharply. Should the untested rebel regimes be officially recognized or should the U.S. protect its crucial neutrality? As rebel agents and Spanish diplomat-spies vied behind the scenes for U.S. political and military assets, it became clear that the U.S. had inadvertently become involved in Spanish America’s revolutionary struggle.
