Recollections of My Youth by Ernest Renan Pdf

PREFACE. One of the most popular legends in Brittany is that relating to an imaginary town called Is, which is supposed to have been swallowed up by the sea at some unknown time. There are several places along the coast which are pointed out as the site of this imaginary city, and the fishermen have many strange tales to tell of it. According to them, the tips of the spires of the churches may be seen in the hollow of the waves when the sea is rough, while during a calm the music of their bells, ringing out the hymn appropriate to the day, rises above the waters. I often fancy that I have at the bottom of my heart a city of Is with its bells calling to prayer a recalcitrant congregation. At times I halt to listen to these gentle vibrations which seem as if they came from immeasurable depths, like voices from another world. Since old age began to steal over me, I have loved more especially during the repose which summer brings with it, to gather up these distant echoes of a vanished Atlantis. This it is which has given birth to the six chapters which make up the present volume. The recollections of my childhood do not pretend to form a complete and continuous narrative. They are merely the images which arose before me and the reflections which suggested themselves to me while I was calling up a past fifty years old, written down in the order in which they came. Goethe selected as the title for his memoirs "Truth and Poetry," thereby signifying that a man cannot write his own biography in the same way that he would that of any one else. What one says of oneself is always poetical. To fancy that the small details of one's own life are worth recording is to be guilty of very petty vanity. A man writes such things in order to transmit to others the theory of the universe which he carries within himself. The form of the present work seemed to me a convenient one for expressing certain shades of thought which my previous writings did not convey. I had no desire to furnish information about myself for the future use of those who might wish to write essays or articles about me. What in history is a recommendation would here have been a drawback; the whole of this small volume is true, but not true in the sense required-for a "Biographical Dictionary." I have said several things with the intent to raise a smile, and, if such a thing had been compatible with custom, I might have used the expression cum grano salis as a marginal note in many cases. I have been obliged to be very careful in what I wrote. Many of the persons to whom I refer may be still alive; and those who are not accustomed to find themselves in print have a sort of horror of publicity. I have, therefore, altered several proper names. In other cases, by means of a slight transposition of date and place, I have rendered identification impossible. The story of "the Flax-crusher" is absolutely true, with the exception that the name of the manor-house is a fictitious one. With regard to "Good Master Système," I have been furnished by M. Duportal du Godasmeur with further details which do not confirm certain ideas entertained by my mother as to the mystery in which this aged recluse enveloped his existence. I have, however, made no change in the body of the work, thinking that it would be better to leave M. Duportal to publish the true story, known only to himself, of this enigmatic character.

Memoirs of My Childhood by Annice Browne Pdf

The late Fifties to Sixties in the Caribbean was an era of mass migration by young people between the ages of twenty to forty years old they travelled alone to developed countries in pursuit of a better life. This mass exodus divided families it was a huge sacrifice for many parents with children. They were left with grandparents or extended family members to take care of them. Annice was raised by grandparents after her parents immigrated to the England. This book is about an intrepid childhood journey, which takes you back to the Sixties lifestyle. Annice highlights the stark contrast between the culture of the Caribbean and that of the UK. She recalls how families coped without electricity and running water in homes. As well as containing wise words to inspire all ages, this book offers an adventurous collection of childhood mischief, fun, and laughter. At the very least, its a trip down memory lane, a reminiscence of bygone days, and for young readers, its a journey to an imagined past. Annice Brownes career spans over thirty years as a Personal Assistant during which she gained professional qualifications in Secretarial work, Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) in computer studies. The idea to write her childhood memoirs came about after reading books by the novelist Catherine Cookson, and many autobiographies of famous people (Maya Angelou and Nelson Mandela to name a few). Annice is inspired by the author Iyanla Vanzant, and her unique style of writing. Annices daily motto is: We should live our lives with good intentions.

Early Recollections by Harold H. Mosak,Roger Di Pietro Pdf

Our present and our past are manifestly intertwined. Memories are not identical simulations of the past, but are stories shaped by our current perspectives of others, the world, and ourselves. As a result, the gathering of early recollections can be used as a projective technique that indicates our strengths, goals, lines of movement, fears, and a host of other relevant psychological data. Early Recollections are a quick, accurate, and cost-effective personality assessment demonstrated to have similar reliability and validity to other personality measures. Both a comprehensive and accessible text, Early Recollections: Interpretative Method and Application presents a constructivist approach and systematic development of early recollection theory. Mosak and Di Pietro invite students to think and actively engage in problem solving rather than merely read for content. Supported by step-by-step examples, this book also offers a perspective suitable for application by Adlerian practitioners, non-Adlerian clinicians, and all other mental health professionals and students seeking a new framework for evaluating personality.

Recollections: My Folks and Fields by Eddie B. Rozelle Pdf

RECOLLECTIONS: My Folks and Fields by Eddie B. Rozelle Editor, Rebecca Rozelle Burt In 1960 Eddie B. Rozelle self-published Recollections: My Folks and Fields. The book is a cultural and social history centered in Clay County, Alabama, located in the east central section of the state. By using a manual typewriter and a mimeograph machine and finally having the pages bound in heavy paper, the author recorded a thorough depiction of rural life in southern Alabama in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This new edition, edited by Eddie Rozelles daughter Rebecca Rozelle Burt, is essentially identical to the first. The editing involved little other than correcting mechanical and structural errors. An appendix was added, consisting of relevant material that should be of great interest to readers. Though Rozelle makes it clear that the grueling work involved in farming dominated the lives of most inhabitants of the region, the enormous amount of detail concerning education, medical care, church activities, entertainment, and civic practices re-creates a particular time and place in American history. The narratives of specific events come alive in this writers hands, sometimes with humor, at others with a tragic eye. The strengths of the small, close-knit world were characterized by the interdependence of family and community. Most inhabitants of the Hatchett Creek community worked together to improve their lot, both collectively and individually. It is obvious that Rozelles appreciation of these values, even the hardships of his early life, led him to write this history.

Memoirs of Childhood and Youth by Albert Schweitzer Pdf

In this charming autobiographical essay, Albert Schwenzer tells of his first nineteen years in Upper Alsace and his youthful discoveries of religion, music, and the inspiration of friendship. Even in his boyhood there were traces of what was to become his "reverence for life": as a boy, he writes, he managed to dissuade several companions from going fishing because of the pain he felt the deed gave to both the worm and the fish. In poignant vignettes, Schweitzer also describes his unhappiness at discovering that he had better food or better clothing than chose around him. Memoirs of Childhood and Youth offers wonderful insights on Dr. Schweitzer's childhood journey that eventually led him to dedicate himself to medical service in African colonies. This new translation also has rarely seen photographs of Schweitzer, both as a youth and as an adult.
