A Regimental Surgeon, in War and Prison (Classic Reprint) by Captain Robert V. Dolbey Pdf

Excerpt from A Regimental Surgeon, in War and Prison These recollections of the fighting in France from August to November, 19i4, do not pretend, in any way, to be an authentic his tory of the Campaign. They are merely the record of the work and wanderings of a regimental medical Officer in part Of the Retreat, the Advance, at the Marne, the Aisne, and the fighting at and near La Bassee. There they come to an abrupt conclusion, for, in the grey dawn of a foggy October morning, I was taken prisoner and, with my wounded, my orderlies and stretcher bearers, conducted through our long and eventful pilgrimage into Germany. From the moment the miracle Of the Marne occurred we had little doubt that nothing would stop our victorious progress to the Rhine. Little did I think that the invasion of Germany, on my part, would take place in so igno minious a fashion. When I say that the regiment to which I had the honour of being attached was the 2nd Battalion the King's Own Scottish Borderers of the 13th Brigade. Not illustrated. 1866 edition. Excerpt: ...When onions are not to be procured, a double allowance of potatoes should be issued. You will at once request the commander of your corps to direct the commissaries in his command to make the issues above mentioned, and it is enjoined upon you not to relax your efforts in this matter, so vitally important to the health of the troops, and the interests of the service. You will please direct each regimental Surgeon to state, in the "Remarks" on his weekly report of sick, how often these issues have been made during the preceding week, which you will condense in the " Remarks " on your weekly report to this office. You will please report to this office what action you have taken in pursuance of these instructions, and at the expiration of two weeks make a full report on the subject. "Very respectfully, "Your obedient servant, "JONA. LETTERMAN, Medical Director." On the 7th of February the Commanding General, at the suggestion of Colonel Clarke, ordered that subordinate commissaries should show good reasons why they had not issued fresh and dried vegetables, and fresh bread, whenever these articles had not been furnished by them to the troops. The effect of these measures was soon apparent. The sickness began to subside, the patients to recover more rapidly, and the general health of the Army to improve. The ratio of cases of diarrhoea in February was 54.12 per thousand, and for those of the fevers before mentioned, 2.80 per thousand. In all measures for improving the health of the troops, I was heartily assisted by the Medical Directors of Corps, and the officers of the department generally, each one of whom (with rare exceptions) felt it his duty to do all in his power to increase the efficiency of...

Fighting the Enemy by Mark Johnston Pdf

Fighting The Enemy, first published in 2000, is about men with the job of killing each other. Based on the wartime writings of hundreds of Australian front-line soldiers during World War II, this powerful and resonant book contains many moving descriptions of high emotion and drama. Soldiers' interactions with their enemies are central to war and their attitudes to their adversaries are crucial to the way wars are fought. Yet few books look in detail at how enemies interpret each other. This book is an unprecedented and thorough examination of the way Australian combat soldiers interacted with troops from the four powers engaged in World War II: Germany, Italy, Vichy France and Japan. Each opponent has themes peculiar to it: the Italians were much ridiculed; the Germans were the most respected of enemies; the Vichy French were regarded with ambivalence; while the Japanese were the subject of much hostility, intensified by the real threat of occupation.

Disorderly Misconduct by Chowdhury Ishraq Uz Zaman Pdf

Chowdhury Ishraq Uz Zaman served in the armed forces of Bangladesh as a doctor for more than fifteen years, a good part of which was as an orthopedic surgeon. This is an account and an analysis of both the author's interactions with certain elements in an organizational entity as well as situations and circumstances that influenced a few outcomes. He recalls moments of personal accomplishments and fulfillment, besides also dwelling on instances of dilemmas and disappointments that he encountered during his career. The author examines how a few in any organization, with seemingly misplaced priorities and values, have threatened to undermine the organization's dignity and distinction, thereby jeopardizing its institutional growth, development and reputation. He further explores how the medical institution, which he was a part of, could have functioned more efficiently and effectively. Among other things, the author also ponders whether or not the overall assignments of blame, in general, for medical mishaps were always entirely fair or justified. And finally, he also reveals the details behind the process of his resignation, and the struggles he experienced in getting it accepted. This critical, analytical and thought-provoking narrative is filled with factual accounts, astute observations, objective criticisms, deserving compliments, realistic recommendations and refreshing humor.

Epidemics and the American Military by Jack E. McCallum Pdf

In Epidemics and the American Military, Dr. Jack McCallum examines the major role the military has played propagating and controlling disease throughout this nation’s history. The U.S. armed forces recruit young people from isolated rural areas and densely populated cities, many of whom have been exposed to a smorgasbord of germs. After training and living in close contact with each other for months, soldiers are shipped across countries and continents and meet civilians and other armies. McCallum argues that if one set out to design a perfect world for an aggressive pathogen, it would be hard to do better than an army at war. There are four ways to combat epidemic infectious diseases: quarantine, altering the ecology in which infections spread, medical treatment of infection, and immunization. Each has played a specific but often overlooked role in American wars. A case can be made that General George Washington saved the American Revolution when he mandated inoculation of the Continental Army with smallpox. The Union Army might very well have taken Richmond in 1862 had it not been for an epidemic of typhoid fever during the Peninsular Campaign. Yellow fever was a proximate cause of the American invasion of Cuba in 1898, and its control enabled a continued U.S. presence on the island and in the rest of the Caribbean. Had it not been for influenza, German Gen. Erich Ludendorff might well have succeeded in his offensive in the closing years of World War I. Before senior Army and Naval officers recognized the importance of anti-malarial prophylaxis and forced its acceptance by hesitant troops, the World War II Solomon and New Guinea campaigns were in danger of collapsing.

Telling Pacific Lives by Vicki Luker,Brij V. Lal Pdf

"This volume of essays is an exploration of the way in which scholars from different disciplines, standpoints and theoretical orientations attempt to write life stories in the Pacific. It is the product of a conference organised by the Division of Pacific and Asian History at The Australian National University in December 2005. The aim of the conference was to explore ways in which Pacific lives are read and constructed through a variety of media: films, fiction, faction, history under four overarching themes. The first, Framing Lives, sought to explore various ways of constructing a life from a classic western perspective of birth, formation, experiences and death of an individual to other ways, for example, life as secondary to a longer genealogical entity, life as a symbol of collective experience, individual lives captured and fragmented in a mosaic of others, lives made meaningful by their implication in a particular historical or cultural web, the underlying values and world views that inform one or another approach to framing a life. The second theme, the Stuff of Life, looked at materials, methods and collaborative arrangements with which the biographer, autobiographer and recorder work, their objectives, constraints, inspirations, challenges and tricks. The third section, Story Lines, focused on formats and genres such as edited diaries, collections of writings, voice recordings, genres of biography autobiography, truth and fiction (verse, dance, novels) and the varieties and different advantages of narrative shapes that crystallise the telling of a life. The final section, Telling Lives/Changing Lives, focused on biography/autobiography and the consciousness of identity, history, purpose, lives as witness and windows, telling lives as change for those involved in the tale, the telling, the listening. The overall aim was to bring out both the generic or universal challenges of telling lives as well as to highlight the particular tendencies and trends in the Pacific. Yet these four themes, which seemed analytically promising at the outset, proved in practice difficult to disentangle from the presentations at the workshop"--Provided by publisher.
