It is well at once to disabuse one's mind of this idea, for there are few absolutely level stretches in Leicestershire. These you may find in Cheshire, but not, so far as I know, in the Midlands. Some parts of the country are almost precipitous, afor example, those who go to Tilton Wood on the first Tuesday in November will find themselves in a steep country, with sharp slopes and rather intricate bottoms, which need a light hand and a clever horse to cross with safety. But, except in some parts of the Monday country of the Quorn and of the Thursday or Saturday country of the Cottesmore, you will be galloping up and down hill all day. T h e Devon and Somerset country has many districts all differing in type, with different soils, and different formations, some of them being separated from the others by stretches of country untenanted by deer, and it is to these unstocked tracts that it is the constant endeavour, during hindhunting at any rate, of the executive to drive some single deer, when a successful chase becomes almost assured. Historic Dunster sees the staghounds several times each year and its great annual meet in 1he staghunting season, following its Horse Show day brings together an exceeding great concourse of pursuers and sight-seers, so readily is the home of the Luttrells approached by road and rail. Minehead, with its fast growing population, lies near by and turns out in force 1o attend this meet, and the many villages around all send their contingents of horse, foot and wheel men. Alcombe and Timberscombe, Carhampton and Bilbrook, Stogumber and Williton are all in easy reach of the long wide street on which Dunster Castle looks down, and this same street by the hour of-eleven becomes thronged indeed at the Yarnmarket end. The great hounds lie panting on the dusty red stones of the roadway opposite the low arched frontal of the Luttrell Arms Hotel, and round them presses an inquiring and admiring crowd, as thickly packed as upon Cloutsham Ball, or at the corner of Bagborough Plantation. The district round Dunster is one which of all others need a heavy and recent rainfall to enable hounds to do good work, for its dry and gravelly soil holds no scent to speak...
