Now What? by Amy Curran Baker Pdf

"In 2008, Amy Curran Baker was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma and opted for bilateral mastectomy with Direct to Implant Reconstruction. Within three weeks of being diagnosed she had a mastectomy and was on the road to recovery. But after the surgery she had a lot of questions, the same that most women will have. As an Occupational Therapist, she knew some of the answers from her own clinical training and experience. But many more came from speaking with other women who had undergone mastectomies, from researching message boards, and a little bit of luck. Now she and her co-authors have brought together the answers to the questions that women face in chapters that cover everything from how to prepare for going to the hospital to when you come home" -- publisher's web site.

The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook by Kathy Steligo Pdf

For a decade The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook has been the best resource on this topic for women who have had a mastectomy. Equal parts science and support, it is filled with stories that illustrate the emotional and physical components of breast reconstruction. Readers will find advice about choosing a doctor and a procedure, insurance and payment issues, how to prepare for surgery, and what to expect during recovery. Expert commentary by physicians and insights from patients inform this book, as does the exhaustive research by the author, a two-time breast cancer survivor who has twice had reconstructive surgery. New in this edition are discussions of• the pros and cons of saline and silicone implants • solutions for post-lumpectomy cosmetic problems• new immediate-delayed reconstruction when post-mastectomy radiation may be required• the benefits and limitations of nipple-sparing mastectomy• considerations for direct-to-implant reconstruction• newly developed tissue flap procedures • who can best apply nipple and areola tattoos and why tattoos may not last• enriching fat with stem cells so it stays in the breast• patient-controlled tissue expansion • how insurance and health care reform affect reconstruction -- Brice W. Augmentation Mastopexy by M. Bradley Calobrace,Bill G. Kortesis,Gaurav Bharti,Chet Mays Pdf

Breast augmentation paired with mastopexy is often regarded as a challenging procedure since it is essentially two surgeries in one. Because of the complexity of the dual procedure, as well as the careful planning required, many doctors avoid performing these surgeries together, instead preferring their patient to undergo two separate surgeries. These two procedures can be safely performed with methodical planning and intra operative execution. This book provides not only insight and instruction on a variety of mastopexy procedures and accompanying types of breast augmentation, but it will also help the clinician determine the optimal surgery for each individual patient. Primarily meant for practicing aesthetic plastic surgeons, Augmentation Mastopexy -- Mastering the Art in the Management of the Ptotic Breast will also find use among plastic surgery fellows and plastic surgery residents. Unlike some of the competitive literature that briefly touches on the topic or simply provides an overview, the information provided is methodical and comprehensive, providing a wealth of color images to accompany the techniques described. Case studies with long-term follow up are also included, offering not only an understanding of potential pitfalls but a veritable how-to for handling complications when they do arise.

Safety of Silicone Breast Implants by Institute of Medicine,Committee on the Safety of Silicone Breast Implants Pdf

The Dow Corning case raised serious questions about the safety of silicone breast implants and about larger issues of medical device testing and patient education. Safety of Silicone Breast Implants presents a well-documented, thoughtful exploration of the safety of these devices, drawing conclusions from the available research base and suggesting further questions to be answered. This book also examines the sensitive issues surrounding women's decisions about implants. In reaching conclusions, the committee reviews: The history of the silicone breast implant and the development of its chemistry. The wide variety of U.S.-made implants and their regulation by the Food and Drug Administration. Frequency and consequences of local complications from implants. The evidence for and against links between implants and autoimmune disorders, connective tissue disease, neurological problems, silicone in breast milk, or a proposed new syndrome. Evidence that implants may be associated with lower frequencies of breast cancer. Safety of Silicone Breast Implants provides a comprehensive, well-organized review of the science behind one of the most significant medical controversies of our time.

Oncoplastic Breast Surgery by Florian Fitzal,Peter Schrenk Pdf

The initial idea to write a book on oncoplastic techniques was raised through a meeting on breast cancer treatment in Saalfelden, A- tria two years ago. Contrary to the rather minor role breast surgery is conceded today compared to other treatment modalities the s- geons role on the further outcome of the disease is crucial and never compensated by radiation or adjuvant therapy. Whereas surgery a decade ago was merely excision of the cancer and closure of the wound leaving behind a mutilated breast in many women, the advent of oncoplastic surgery completely changed the modern surgical approach to breast cancer. The concept of oncoplastic breast surgery combines oncologic - mor resection - either breast conservation or mastectomy - with t- ditional or less traditional plastic surgical techniques. The primary goal is to achieve an optimal cosmetic result with long time local tumor control. Some (non – randomized) studies available in patients following breast conservation oncoplastic surgery showed tumor resection to be associated with wider free margins, less patients needing re-operation surgery for involved or close margins, a widening of the indications for breast conser- tion surgery, a low complication rate and at least an equal local recurrence rate. There is no doubt that oncoplastic breast surgery experienced a r- id rise with more patients demanding this kind of surgery. However, a profound knowledge of the different oncoplastic techniques is - sential for the outcome.
