Database Recovery by Vijay Kumar,Sang Hyuk Son Pdf

Database Recovery presents an in-depth discussion on all aspects of database recovery. Firstly, it introduces the topic informally to set the intuitive understanding, and then presents a formal treatment of recovery mechanism. In the past, recovery has been treated merely as a mechanism which is implemented on an ad-hoc basis. This book elevates the recovery from a mechanism to a concept, and presents its essential properties. A book on recovery is incomplete if it does not present how recovery is practiced in commercial systems. This book, therefore, presents a detailed description of recovery mechanisms as implemented on Informix, OpenIngres, Oracle, and Sybase commercial database systems. Database Recovery is suitable as a textbook for a graduate-level course on database recovery, as a secondary text for a graduate-level course on database systems, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.

Principles of Transaction Processing for the Systems Professional by Philip A. Bernstein,Eric Newcomer Pdf

"The best introduction to transaction processing systems I have ever read." - K.Torp, ACM Computing Reviews, November 1997 Principles of Transaction Processing is a clear, concise guide for anyone involved in developing applications, evaluating products, designing systems, or engineering products. This book provides an understanding of the internals of transaction processing systems, describing how they work and how best to use them. It includes the architecture of transaction processing monitors, transactional communications paradigms, and mechanisms for recovering from transaction and system failures. Use of transaction processing systems in business, industry, and government is increasing rapidly; the emergence of electronic commerce on the Internet is creating new demands. As a result, many developers are encountering transaction processing applications for the first time and need a practical explanation of techniques. Software engineers who build and market operating systems, communications systems, programming tools, and other products used in transaction processing applications will also benefit from this thorough presentation of principles. Rich with examples, it describes commercial transaction processing systems, transactional aspects of database servers, messaging systems, Internet servers, and object-oriented systems, as well as each of their subsystems. Features: Easy-to-read descriptions of fundamentals. Real world examples illustrating key points. Focuses on practical issues faced by developers. Explains most major products and standards, including IBM's CICS, IMS, and MQSeries; X/Open's XA, STDL, and TX; BEA Systems' TUXEDO; Digital's ACMS; Transarc's Encina; AT&T/NCR's TOP END; Tandem's Pathway/TS; OMG's OTS; and Microsoft's Microsoft Transaction Server.

Trusted Recovery and Defensive Information Warfare by Peng Liu,Sushil Jajodia Pdf

Information security concerns the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information processed by a computer system. With an emphasis on prevention, traditional information security research has focused little on the ability to survive successful attacks, which can seriously impair the integrity and availability of a system. Trusted Recovery And Defensive Information Warfare uses database trusted recovery, as an example, to illustrate the principles of trusted recovery in defensive information warfare. Traditional database recovery mechanisms do not address trusted recovery, except for complete rollbacks, which undo the work of benign transactions as well as malicious ones, and compensating transactions, whose utility depends on application semantics. Database trusted recovery faces a set of unique challenges. In particular, trusted database recovery is complicated mainly by (a) the presence of benign transactions that depend, directly or indirectly on malicious transactions; and (b) the requirement by many mission-critical database applications that trusted recovery should be done on-the-fly without blocking the execution of new user transactions. Trusted Recovery And Defensive Information Warfare proposes a new model and a set of innovative algorithms for database trusted recovery. Both read-write dependency based and semantics based trusted recovery algorithms are proposed. Both static and dynamic database trusted recovery algorithms are proposed. These algorithms can typically save a lot of work by innocent users and can satisfy a variety of attack recovery requirements of real world database applications. Trusted Recovery And Defensive Information Warfare is suitable as a secondary text for a graduate level course in computer science, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in information security.

Advances in Databases and Information Systems by Johann Eder,Leonid A. Kalinichenko Pdf

This volume results from the regular sessions of the Second International Workshop of the Moscow ACM SIGMOD Chapter "Advances in Databases and Information Systems" (ADBIS'95) that took place 27th-30th June 1995, in Moscow, Russia. ADBIS'95 continues a series of annual Workshops on Advances in Databases and Information Systems organized by the Moscow ACM SIGMOD Chapter in cooperation with the Russian Founda tion for Basic Research. Past successful ADBIS conferences include the ADBIS'93 and ADBIS'94 Workshops that took place in Moscow. The aims of these workshops are to provide a forum for the presentation and in-depth discussion of advanced research directions that will effectively improve the building and use of future information systems and to increase communication between the Eastern and Western research communities which were formerly separated and still have only rare possibilities to interact. Improving of the contacts and exchange of ideas between researchers from the East and from the West will eventually lead to better collaboration between them. The ADBIS'95 Call for Submissions attracted 60 submissions from 15 countries of which 35 submissions were accepted for presentation at the regular sessions, 9 as posters, and 7 as presentations for a special session for the Information Systems for Science. This volume contains the papers presented in the regular sessions.

This book provides an overview of both experimental and commercial real-time database systems (RTDBs) and a systematic approach to understanding, designing, and implementing them. To this end, the book is composed of four chapters: Chapter 1 “An Overview of Real-Time Database Systems” delves into the realm of RTDBs and discusses the specific requirements, transaction models, and scheduling algorithms that set RTDBs apart from conventional DBMs. Chapter 2 on “Experimental Real-Time Databases” presents various experimental RTDBs developed in academia with their architectures, features, and implementations, while chapter 3 on “Commercial Real-Time Databases” does so for systems developed and offered by commercial vendors as products or services. Eventually, chapter 4 on “Applications of Real-Time Database Systems” showcases various applications of RTDBs across different domains. This book will help researchers, graduate students and advanced professionals to get an overview of the area and to understand the main challenges and systems available.

From 2002 it has taken place yearly. It attracts an international audience from both the academic and industrial communities. In response to the call for papers, 168 papers were submitted to the symposium. These papers were evaluated on the basis of their significance, novelty, and technical quality. Each paper was reviewed by at least three members of the Program Comm- tee. The Program Committee meeting was held electronically, holding intensive d- cussion over a period of two weeks. Finally, 37 papers were selected for presentation at the symposium, giving an acceptance rate of 22%.

Advances in Database Technology - EDBT 2000 by Carlo Zaniolo,Peter C. Lockemann,Marc H. Scholl,Torsten Grust Pdf

EDBT 2000 is the seventh conference in a series dedicated to the advancement of database technology. This year’s conference special theme, \Connect Millions of Users and Data Sources," underscores the importance of databases for the information age that is dawning with the new millennium. The importance - rives not just from the observation that the information age essentially rests on theconvergenceofcommunications, computing, andstorage.Equallyimportant, many of the concepts and techniques underlying the success of databasesystems have independent meaning and impact for today’s distributed information s- tems. The papers in the volume should also be seen in this light. The EDBT 2000 conference program includes 30 research papers selected by the program committee out of 187 submissions, covering advances in research, development, and applications of databases. The conference program also - cludes six industry andapplications papers,a panel discussion, six tutorials, and several software demonstrations. The conference features three distinguished - vited speakers: Ashish Gupta discusses database issues in electronic commerce, Stefano Ceri addresses the impact and challenges of XML on databases, and Andreas Reuter shares his views on new perspectives on database technology. The technical contributions presented at the EDBT 2000 conference are colle- ed and preserved in this volume that we are pleased to present to you with the expectation that it will serve as a valuable research and reference tool in your professional life.
