Reduced Constructions in Spanish (RLE Linguistics E: Indo-European Linguistics) by John C. Moore Pdf

This book discusses a class of Reduced Constructions which exhibit both mono- and bi-clausal characteristics. In Spanish, as well as other Romance languages, the most salient mono-clausal characteristic is the possibility of clitic climbing, i.e. the possibility of an object clitic attaching to a verb that is higher (in the appropriate sense) than the verb which selects the object to which the clitic corresponds. Reduced constructions come in essentially two varieties: clause reduction (or restructuring) constructions and union (or causative / perception verb)constructions. There has been a good deal of work on a number of aspects of reduced constructions; here the author discusses work in three areas: the analysis of pronominal clitics, the structure of clause reduction and union constructions (and how these treatments interact with the analysis of clitics to yield an account of clitic climbing), and the encoding of embedded subjects in union constructions.

Reduced Constructions in Spanish by John C. Moore Pdf

In a revised version of his 1991 dissertation for the University of California-Santa Cruz, Moore uses a Government and Binding framework to analyze a class of syntactic constructions that simultaneously exhibit mono-clausal and bi-clausal behaviors. He seeks to capture their ambivalent nature by opposing them to a full embedded sentence, but at the same time recognizing their full sentential complement. Most such studies encompass Romance languages as whole, which all contain such constructions, but Moore concentrates on a single language to ferret out details that can be applied elsewhere. Weakening Processes in the History of Spanish Consonants by Ray Harris-Northall Pdf

Raymond Harris-Northall uses the distinctive features of generative phonology to present synchronic and diachronic rules, but exploits the evidence of the history of the Spanish sound system to show that the 'simplicity' required by the generativists often obscures rather than illuminates the way in which changes develop from small beginnings. Instead, he illustrates the essential need to recognise the relevance of syllable structure constraints, which, allied with a complex but justified and helpful presentation of the relevant strength hierarchies, allow him not only to describe but to explain how changes began in the most suitable phonetic environments and then spread to subsequent items on the hierarchy over time. The result is the most serious and detailed application of strength hierarchy theory that has yet been made to a coherent body of historical data from two millennia of attestations, data that is interesting in its own right, and amenable to the theory.
