Getting Schooled by Garret Keizer Pdf

In this powerful, eloquent story of his return to the classroom, a former teacher offers a rousing defense of his beleaguered vocation Perhaps no profession is so constantly discussed, regulated, and maligned by non-practitioners as teaching. The voices of the teachers themselves are conspicuously missing. Defying this trend, teacher and writer Garret Keizer takes us to school—literally—in this arresting account of his return to the same rural Vermont high school where he taught fourteen years ago. Much has changed since then—a former student is his principal, standardized testing is the reigning god, and smoking in the boys' room has been supplanted by texting in the boys' room. More familiar are the effects of poverty, the exuberance of youth, and the staggering workload that technology has done as much to increase as to lighten. Telling the story of Keizer's year in the classroom, Getting Schooled takes us everywhere a teacher might go: from field trips to school plays to town meetings, from a kid's eureka moment to a parent's dark night of the soul. At once fiercely critical and deeply contemplative, Keizer exposes the obstacles that teachers face daily—and along the way takes aim at some cherished cant: that public education is doomed, that the heroic teacher is the cure for all that ails education, that educational reform can serve as a cheap substitute for societal reformation. Angry, humorous, and always hopeful, Getting Schooled is as good an argument as we are likely to hear for a substantive reassessment of our schools and those who struggle in them.

Pelvic Floor Re-education by Bernhard Schüssler,Jo Laycock,Stuart L. Stanton Pdf

Pelvic Floor Re-education encompasses a variety of techniques for increasing the strength of, and control over, the pelvic floor muscles. These techniques are now emerging as an effective and viable alternative to surgery in the treatment of urinary incontinence and related conditions. This volume presents a reasoned, scientific approach to the use of pelvic floor re-education. Starting with the latest theories on anatomy, pathophysiology and possible causes of pelvic floor damage, the text then describes the importance of pelvic floor evaluation in determining the type of treatment required. A number of re-education techniques are assessed including isolated muscle exercise, vaginal cones, biofeedback control and electrical stimulation. Recent research work is also reviewed which allows the reader to evaluate the different modalities advocated in the management of pelvic floor dysfunction.

World Class, the Re-Education of America by Francoise Piron,Mary Ellen Shevalier Pdf

Prominent in the minds of contemporary educational leaders and policy makers are the unique challenges facing 21st century students and educators. The technologically advanced society in which we live requires us to reevaluate many aspects of teaching and learning. In political, entrepreneurial and academic circles, numerous philosophies of education and pedagogical strategies have surfaced with the intent of identifying and deliberately addressing the shortcomings of our current educational system. Written from the front lines of the classroom, to benefit all stakeholders, World Class, The Re-education of America, offers grassroots answers to students, teachers, parents, administrators and policy makers alike. This book illustrates that a shift in perspective can inspire the re-birth of an educational system by honoring the strengths of each individual. The authors offer a model for a high energy, authentic, and successful classroom! By referencing personal stories, derived from thirty years of journaling and direct classroom experiences, the authors highlight some of the inequities and shortcomings of our current educational system. Using a pilot program as a springboard for sharing their observations as well as their trials and tribulations, the authors lead the reader down a pathway that explores educational philosophies while providing tangible ways to propel us forward. The how-to format guides educators toward a realization that they, too, can begin to offer their children and students a "World Class" education, a class to which this generation truly belongs. It is a must read for all stakeholders who appreciate how integral a role our educational system plays in shaping our personal, national and global success. World Class, The Re-education of America, is for all readers who know that the system is broken and that it is too important not to fix it.

Teaching Selves by Jane Danielewicz Pdf

2001 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title This is a book about how identities arise, in particular, about how individuals "become" teachers, and how pedagogy in teacher education programs can promote identity development. Teaching Selves argues that being a teacher is not a matter of simply adopting a role but rather involves the construction of an identity as a teacher. Focusing on identity, the book tells the stories of six undergraduate students enrolled in a secondary teacher education program at a large state university. Through a qualitative study made up of interviews, observations, and teaching experiences with the subjects over a three-year period, the author explains the process of becoming a teacher, concentrating on the influences of education courses and other features of the teacher education program. Filled with students' stories and personal reflections from the author, Teaching Selves offers a personal vision of what is possible in a very public endeavor—the education of new teachers.

The Education and Reeducation of POW 31G-23742357 by Wolfgang D. Schmidt Pdf

"The Education and Reeducation of POW 31G-23742357", an autobiographical narrative, should actually be a first person story but was written as a third person tall tale to the best of this first person's waning but still rather vivid memories. Nothing in it should be taken as earnest and truthful as a hollywoodian docudrama because much of it is composed from a German point of view and no German writer after Goethe is a trustworthy reporter of the German soul, or psyche, or stool, and their wars and history. Late in April 1945 Wolfgang, the storyteller, became simply a piece of disarmed enemy forces. No German soldiers taken after March 45 became legally Prisoners of War and treated as such, but were Disarmed Enemy Forces to whom the International Red Cross had no access and who were treated accordingly. Becoming a POW with the above mentioned number in late September 45 was his insurance for not winding up in one of the post WWII underworld camps of the Eisenhower-de Gaulle design in which hundreds of thousands erstwhile German soldiers perished, not the heavies of Nazidom but ordinary yokels from teenagers to aged Volkssturm invalids who - in GI language - wouldn't know the difference between shit and Shinola. Nevertheless, all along his existence as a prisoner Wolfgang did in fact luck out. The foundation of this lucking out was certainly his High School English, plus having taught himself the technique of expressing himself in that fabulous Basic English plus a few dozens technical English terms like carburetor and switch board, and for comparing Schiller's romantic drama "Die Jungfrau von Orleans" with George Bernhard Shaw's so much more realistic "Joan d'Ark", in English for that matter, because GBS fascinated him and was one of the most performed playwrights of the German stage, even during the Nazi era. Wolfgang close contacts with Americans had its beginning when he surrendered - in a way negotiated the surrender - of the 1st Elephanten - Flak - Batterie to an armed patrol of the 99th US Infantry Division from Pennsylvania, somewhere north of Tyrolean Kufstein in the Bavarian Alps. This surrender procedure was almost comical and may appear impossible in the context of this gruesome war, but the truth of the story may be checked out with the war diary of the Checker Board Division which may contain a thousand words describing the whole scene. A few weeks later Wolfgang was transferred north to the Red One' Infantry Division in which, many years later, two of his American born would serve. Wolfgang lucked out being the straw boss and interpreter of the prisoner work detail assigned to the kitchen and mess of headquarters company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Regiment. and within a couple of days enjoyed, apart from his work, being the answer man of many GIs who could not explain that shrill difference between the training propaganda films to which they had been exposed and the Germany which they now experienced , the masses of refugees (ethnic Germans from Bohemia), the DPs with many Jews among them, and the various types of camps ranging from those of absolute horror to labor camps in reasonable order, such as the one in which Wolfgang and his buddies and other work details were quartered. These were good days and according to rumors the prisoners would be discharged rather soon but then were free to continue to work their jobs as hired indigenous personnel, living in the camp without being imprisoned. It all sounded very good. Then General Eisenhower bounced Patton, who had earlier declared that no prisoners of war taken by his Third Army would be surrendered to camps of starvation and annihilation in France, thus putting a dirty stain on the American flag. He would rather resign from the Army than participate in this utmost crime which contradicts the ideals and objectives for which he had fought this war. After being bounced but still around, General Ge

Re-educating Troubled Youth by Alexis de Tocqueville Pdf

This book is about helping troubled young people who are searching separately for security, identity, and purpose in their lives. Childhood and adolescence are pivotal stages in the quest to belong, to become somebody, and to be worth something. Children need stimulation, affection, and guidance in order to develop their potentials, but many are reared in environments that deprive them of these nutriments. Adolescents approach the threshold of independence with only the experiences gained from childhood; many lack the support of significant actions. Those who encounter difficulty in navigating through these turbulent years are to be identified by society as troubled or troublesome. These children and youth present challenges that do not yield to simple panaceas. Although no simple approach holds all the answers, bridging various concepts of education and treatment offers the best opportunity for creating positive changes. The authors refer to this process as -re-education- with full awareness that this term has been used in a variety of philosophical contexts including behavioral, ecological, and psychodynamic views.

How I Survived a Chinese "Reeducation" Camp by Gulbahar Haitiwaji,Rozenn Morgat Pdf

The first memoir about the "reeducation" camps by a Uyghur woman, describing the insidious nature of oppression, the dehumanizing effects of torture and brainwashing, and the human drive to survive—and resist—under even the most horrific circumstances. This new paperback edition features a new introduction by the author. “I have written what I lived. The atrocious reality.” — Gulbahar Haitiwaji to Paris Match For three years Gulbahar Haitiwaji was held in Chinese detention centers and “reeducation” camps, enduring interrogations, torture, hunger, police violence, brainwashing, forced sterilization, freezing cold, rats, and nights under the blinding fluorescent lights of her prison cell. Her only crime? Being a Uyghur. China’s brutal repression of Uyghurs, a Turkish-speaking Muslim ethnic group, has been denounced as genocide and reported widely in media around the world. In 2019, the New York Times published the “Xinjiang Papers,” leaked documents exposing the forced detention of more than one million Uyghurs in Chinese “reeducation” camps. The Chinese government denies that these camps are concentration camps, seeking to legitimize their existence in the name of the “total fight against Islamic terrorism, infiltration and separatism” and calling them “schools.” But none of this is true. Gulbahar only escaped thanks to the relentless efforts of her daughter, with the help of the French diplomatic corps. Others have not been so fortunate. In How I Survived a Chinese “Reeducation” Camp, Gulbahar tells her story, describing the insidious nature of oppression, the dehumanizing effects of torture and brainwashing, and the human drive to survive—and resist—under even the most horrific circumstances. This new paperback edition includes a new introduction by the author.

Vagina by Lynn Enright Pdf

Winner of the Hearst Big Book Awards, 2019 - Women's Health's Book of the Year _____________ Shocking, brilliant, important. A fine addition to the feminist canon. - Emma Jane Unsworth For the first time I feel like I PROPERLY understand my vagina! I wish I had read this 23 years ago! - Scarlett Curtis _____________ From earliest childhood, girls are misled about their bodies, encouraged to describe their genitalia with cute and silly names rather than anatomically correct terms. In our schools and in our culture, we are coy about women while putting straight men's sexuality front and centre. Girls grow up feeling ashamed about their periods, about the appearance of their vulvas, about their own desires. They grow up without a full and honest sex education, and this lack of knowledge has serious consequences: the number of women attending cervical screening appointments in the UK is at a 20-year low while labiaplasty is the fastest growing type of plastic surgery in the world. Vagina provides girls and women with information they need about their own bodies - about the vagina, the hymen, the clitoris, the orgasm; about conditions like endometriosis and vulvodynia. It confronts taboos, such as abortion, miscarriage, infertility and masturbation. It tackles vital social issues like period poverty, female genital mutilation and the rights of transgender women. It is honest and moving as Lynn Enright shares her personal stories but this is about more than one woman - this is a book that will provoke thousands of conversations. We urgently need to talk about women's sexual and reproductive health, about our experiences of sex and pregnancy and pain and pleasure. Vagina: A Re-Education will help us do just that.

Promising Practices in Indigenous Teacher Education by Paul Whitinui,Carmen Rodriguez de France,Onowa McIvor Pdf

This book provides a comprehensive overview of navigating the on-going systemic challenges, hardships, and problems facing many indigenous teacher education programs today, helping to foster a commitment to developing quality indigenous teacher education programs that are sustainable, distinctive and excellent. However, despite a growing cadre of indigenous peoples working in teacher education, there is still a noticeable gap between the uptake of what is being taught in conventional teacher education programs, and how this translates to what we see student teachers doing in the classroom. The often tricky and complex nature of indigenous teacher education programming also means that there are multiple realities, approaches and pathways that require greater communication, collaboration, and cooperation. The very nature of this complexity, the book suggests, requires a strength-based and future-focused approach built on trust, integrity, courage and respect for indigeneity, as well as an understanding of what it means to be indigenous. The examples and experiences presented identify a number of promising practices that work well in current indigenous teacher education programs and beyond. By promoting a greater appreciation for the inclusion of culturally relevant practices in teacher education, the book aims to breathe new life into the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of indigenous teacher education programs moving forward.

Understanding the Educational Experiences of Imprisoned Men by Helen Nichols Pdf

Understanding the Educational Experiences of Imprisoned Men explores how adult male prisoners interpret and give value to their experiences of education, presenting an opportunity to consider how education can be beneficial to prisoners including and beyond the enhancement of employability skills. While the primary aim for education in prison has been to increase employability skills to prevent reoffending, further attention needs to be given to the broader outcomes of educational experiences and the importance of the development of other personal attributes including self-confidence, empowerment and the ability to engage in positive relationships. This book considers how education is also used by men in prison to cope with prison life, to reconsider their identity and to develop and maintain relationships. It also discusses the relationships that prisoners have with their teachers and other prison staff as well as the relationships that different types of prison staff have between each other. In addition, the role that education can play in the process of desistance from crime is discussed to provide an understanding of what changes occur in men who participate in educational courses. This book will be of interest to not only students and scholars with an interest in imprisonment, rehabilitation and criminal justice practice, but also educationalists, those who work in the prison setting and in social work. It may also appeal to those involved in community development programmes and broader sociological research.

The Political Re-Education of Germany and her Allies by Nicholas Pronay,Keith Wilson Pdf

Originally published in 1985, this book provides an important insight into the principal aspects of the history of the policy and practice of political re-education from its origins to 1951. ‘Political re-education’ was the British alternative to the ideas put forward by the USA and the USSR in the common search for a post-war policy which would permanently prevent the resurgence of Germany for a third time as a hostile military power. It was adopted as Allied policy and remains one of the boldest and most imaginative policies in history for securing lasting peace. This book discusses the question of the place of this policy in the preservation of peace and the integration of Germany and Japan into the community of their historical enemies.
