Federico García Lorca's autobiographical play, Once Five Years Pass deals directly with the discovery of his homosexual identity. While themes of sterility, desire, repression and death are central to this work, these themes are masked by the surrealistic language and plasticity that characterized his experimental theatre. Later, in his more traditional rural plays, Blood Wedding, Yerma, and The House of Bernarda Alba, Lorca sought to examine, at a safer distance, the themes elaborated in Once Five Years Pass. To this end, he removed himself from the center of the drama, creating a series of rural plays featuring women as the protagonists. An examination of the symbolic content in Blood Wedding, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba, which is more accessible in these traditionally structured works, supplies the key to the interpretation of Lorca's «unperformable» play.

This study explores the meaning and importance of flamenco in the works of two of the most important and influential figures in 20th-century Spanish culture, the poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca and the film-maker Carlos Saura. Lorca and Saura shared a fascination for flamenco as a medium for the existential ideology of the marginalized and disenfranchised and this work evaluates the development of these themes through a close, contextual study of their works, which are linked explicitly by Saura's film adaptation of Lorca's Bodas de sangre and, more profoundly, by their use of flamenco to express ideas of sexual and political marginalization in pre- and post- Francoist Spain respectively. The study demonstrates that an understanding of the symbolism, visual style, characters, themes and performance system of flamenco is key to a greater understanding of the social, sexual, political and existential themes in the works of Lorca and Saura.

"To this day, both at home and beyond Mexico's borders, Silvestre Revueltas (1899-1940) has been systematically portrayed as a nationalist composer. Unknown or ignored, his private and public writings destroy this myth straight out. The then-fashionable musicking of a presumed Mexicanness was far from Revueltas' mind. Strongly inspired by the Soviet Revolution, his dream was to find ways to sound the voice of the social people, not only those wandering the Mexican streets but also the gypsy miners in Spain, the black slaves in the U.S. South, and those in Cuba in colonial times. The various soundings of such social actors account for the diversity of aesthetics in his works, explored in this book through a correlation of the musical texts with the composer's writings as well as his political activism: he was not only active at home as a leading member of the League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists, but also significantly as a member of the Mexican delegation visiting Republican Spain in the midst of the war against Franco's fascist troupes. With few exceptions, though, most of his works seek to transcend standards of political art expression, such as program music or scores variously linked to word or image. Significantly, Revueltas' early instrumental works appear to abstract a musical ontology from the time and space of his diverse and multiple social actors through a daringly free use of montage and collage. Avant-garde rebellion and satire are also present in his best-known late works. Revueltas's is a unique and provocative decolonial art that pokes fun at the cosmopolitanistic fantasies of his Eurocentric peers at home as well as exoticizing expectations abroad. Lorca, Bunuel and Dali were, in their respective fields of poetry and theatre, cinema, and painting, three of the most imaginative creative artists of the twentieth century; their impact was felt far beyond the boundaries of their native Spain. But if individually they have been examined by many, their connected lives have rarely been considered. It is these, the ties that bind them, that constitute the subject of this illuminating book. They were born within six years of each other and, as Gwynne Edwards reveals, their childhood circumstances were very similar. Each was affected by a narrow-minded society and an intolerant religious background which equated sex with sin and led all three to experience sexual problems of different kinds: Lorca the guilt and anguish associated with his homosexuality; Bunuel feelings of sexual inhibition; and, Dali virtual impotence. Having met during the 1920s at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, they developed intense personal relationships and channelled their respective obsessions into the cultural forms then prevalent in Europe, in particular Surrealism. Rooted in emotional turmoil, their work - from Lorca's dramatic characters in search of sexual fulfilment, to Bunuel's frustrated men and women, and Dali's potent images of shame and guilt - is highly autobiographical. Their left-wing outrage directed at bourgeois values and the Catholic Church was strongly felt, and in the case of Lorca in particular, was sharpened by the catastrophic Civil War of 1936-9, during the first months of which he was murdered by Franco's fascists. The war hastened Bunuel's departure to France and Mexico and Dali's to New York. Edwards describes how, for the rest of his life, Bunuel clung to his left-wing ideals and made outstanding films, while the increasingly eccentric and money-obsessed Dali embraced Fascism and the Catholic Church, and saw his art go into rapid decline.
