Regional Opioid Analgesia by J. de Castro,J. Meynadier,Michael Zenz Pdf

by E.K. ZSIGMOND, M.D. Department of Anesthesiology University of Illinois Chicago U.S.A. It is, indeed, a distinct honor and privilege to be invited by the authors to write a preface to this monumental monograph, Regional Opioid Analgesia. Regional Opioid Analgesia is a colossal undertaking by Drs. De Castro, Meynadier and Zenz shortly after the introduction of this revolutionary approach to pain relief which opened a new epoch in analgesiology. This is, indeed, the first authentic and comprehensive textbook encompassing the current knowl edge on this novel approach to pain relief. We are indebted to the authors for introducing the new opioids to regional analgesia with the scientists, who de veloped the potent short and ultrashort acting opioids with high therapeutic indices, which many researchers dreamt about but never before materialized. The side effect liabilities of these new opioids are minute as compared to morphine and meperidine. Regional Opioid Analgesia could not have been more authentically written than by Drs. De Castro,Zenz and Meynadier, who have conducted daily clinical investigations on all known opioids for regional analgesia as well as for neurolept analgesia. Therein lies the great value of this monograph: it is the most authentic work on this topic.

New Trends in Regional Analgesia and Anesthesia by Shun Ming Chan,Jui-An Lin,Po-Kai Wang Pdf

Regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine can add significant non-monetary value to a surgical practice and healthcare system in terms of pain relief, reduced incidence of anesthetic- and opioid-related side effects, and faster recovery. Advances in ultrasonic-guided regional anesthesia and analgesia have given clinicians the opportunity to apply new approaches to easily block peripheral nerves. As a result, improvements in outcomes such as analgesia quality, early rehabilitation and patient satisfaction were noted. The use of ultrasound results in faster sensory blocking, shorter performance time, fewer vascular punctures and needle passages. The practice of regional anesthesia has rapidly progressed in recent years with the application of ultrasound which has resulted in a significant improvement in nervous block quality and patient satisfaction. Regional anesthesia has always had a role to play in minimizing peri-operative opioid requirements, but it should no longer be seen as merely an alternative to general anesthesia, rather a complement to an overall multimodal anesthetic strategy.

Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Health Sciences Policy,Committee on Pain Management and Regulatory Strategies to Address Prescription Opioid Abuse Pdf

Drug overdose, driven largely by overdose related to the use of opioids, is now the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. The ongoing opioid crisis lies at the intersection of two public health challenges: reducing the burden of suffering from pain and containing the rising toll of the harms that can arise from the use of opioid medications. Chronic pain and opioid use disorder both represent complex human conditions affecting millions of Americans and causing untold disability and loss of function. In the context of the growing opioid problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an Opioids Action Plan in early 2016. As part of this plan, the FDA asked the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to update the state of the science on pain research, care, and education and to identify actions the FDA and others can take to respond to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on informing FDA's development of a formal method for incorporating individual and societal considerations into its risk-benefit framework for opioid approval and monitoring.

Regional Anaesthesia Analgesia and Pain Management by M. Tiengo,V.A. Paladini,N. Rawal Pdf

Local-regional anesthesia and pain therapy represent two areas of common interest for all physicians. A thorough preparation in functional anatomy and general pharmacology, including familiarity with local anesthetics and analgesics, is considered fundamental background for further study or clinical application of such techniques. Knowledge of the mechanisms of action, efficacies and side effects of the relevant drugs is essential, as is appreciation of possible drug interactions to evaluate eventual toxic effects. Local-regional anesthesia and pain management are being increasing used in diverse medical specialties, including those requiring manual dexterity. In contemporary medicine correct evaluation of the medical outcome becomes essential, especially in relation to the cost-benefit balance, not only in terms of the resources consumed, also and more importantly for the quality of life of the patient.

Minimally Invasive Surgery in Orthopedics by Giles R. Scuderi,Alfred J. Tria Pdf

Minimally invasive surgery has evolved as an alternative to the traditional approaches in orthopedic surgery and has gathered a great deal of attention. Many surgeons are now p- forming all types of procedures through smaller surgical felds. Along with changes in the surgical technique, there have been rapid advances in computer navigation and robotics as tools to enhance the surgeon’s vision in the limited operative felds. With these new techniques and technologies, we must ensure that these procedures are performed safely and effectively with predictable clinical outcomes. This book has been expanded from our previous publi- tions to include spine and foot and ankle surgery, along with updated sections on knee arth- plasty, hip arthroplasty, and upper extremity surgery. The clinical information and surgical techniques, along with tips and pearls, provided by experts in the feld allows the reader to grasp a comprehensive understanding of the nuances of MIS. It is our intention that this text will be a valuable reference for all orthopedic surgeons. New York, NY Giles R. Scuderi, MD Piscataway, NJ Alfred J.
