John Case and Aristotelianism in Renaissance England by Charles Schmitt Pdf

Dr. Schmitt shows that Case was heir to both the traditions of scholastic interpretation of Aristotle and the new humanistic currents, that his Aristotelianism was strongly eclectic, and that he drew heavily upon Renaissance Neoplatonic and other intellectual traditions in compiling well-rounded philosophical manuals adapted to his age. Schmitt argues that, even though Case was the prime representative of peripatetic thought during Elizabeth's reign, he forged strong links with leading figures in such areas of English culture as drama, literature, art, and music, as well as with important ecclesiastical and political figures. He also contends that Aristotelian philosophy had a much more central position in England than has been previously admitted. Case's position in the scholastic revival which marked late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century English intellectual life is charted, and the historical reality of this revival is firmly established.

History of Universities by Mordechai Feingold,John Watts Pdf

This issue of History of Universities, Volume XXXII / 1-2, contains the customary mix of learned articles and book reviews which makes this publication such an indispensable tool for the historian of higher education. Guest edited by Professor John Watts, this volume focuses on the history of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Corpus Christi College, Oxford was founded in 1517 to advance humanistic learning in the service of God. This collection of essays by some of the leading historians of late medieval and early modern England takes the early history of the College as a starting point to explore the intellectual, social, religious, political, and cultural trends of the era of Renaissance and Reformation. Ranging from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth, and taking in the study of Greek and Hebrew; the practices of antiquarianism, charity, and divine worship; the experience of music, punishment, and the built environment; the networks that connected the college to London and the government; and the interactions of scholars with royal policy on religion, these fifteen essays and three commentaries aim to expose the multiple perspectives from which an early modern college can be viewed and understood. The relationship between 'Renaissance' and 'Reformation', and the social and cultural realities that accompanied these familiar concepts, form one central theme in the papers; the relationship between religious or educational institutions and the state form another. Corpus Christi itself emerges as less innovative than its historic reputation as the first collegium trilingue might suggest, but it becomes the gateway to a richer appreciation of the overlapping worlds of learning, religion and public life in a time of rapid change.

Westminster Abbey Reformed by C.S. Knighton,Richard Mortimer Pdf

Title first published in 2003. Westminster Abbey occupies a unique position in the religious and royal landscape of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. As the scene of coronations and other great public occasions, it has been the continuing focus of the nation's religious life for half the Christian era. Yet the building itself would not have survived the upheavals of the Protestant Reformation had the institution running it not been itself 'reformed' from monastery into collegiate church. These nine studies discuss ways in which Westminster's new corporate structure evolved in the first century of its existence, and look at some of the personalities who played a part in that process. New research, much of it in the Abbey's own rich archive, opens up previously unseen views of this great church's internal affairs, its relationship with the Crown, and its place in its own locality.
