Reimagining Women's Cancers by Michele Berman,Mark Boguski,David Tabatsky Pdf

America's fascination with celebrities never gets old. From People magazine, with a readership of 43 million to Internet sites like JustJared.com with over 80 million monthly views, celebrity information not only sells, it educates people about important issues––including cancer. Information is empowering and reading about a famous person coping with cancer can not only be inspiring, it can save a life. That's what Reimagining Cancer exemplifies through each of the books in the series Cancer doesn't have to be a death sentence. About half of all cancers are preventable and can be avoided if current medical knowledge is better delivered*. This new series, beginning with Reimagining Women's Cancers—focusing on cancer of the breasts, ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina and vulva—provides readers with that critical information to help them manage, cope, and recover through a concise, easy-to-read style and format. Beginning with a view of basic anatomy and an overview of how we view a particular cancer today, chapters flow easily into an explanation of signs, symptoms, diagnosis, scientific information and guidelines, and include a comprehensive survey of treatments and prevention. Woven throughout are stories, both medical and anecdotal, from women such as Angelina Jolie, Joan Lunden, Melissa Etheridge, Sandra Lee, Rita Wilson, Christina Applegate, and Suzanne Somers. Education is the key, and by using celebrity stories, Reimagining Women's Cancers can attract countless readers who might otherwise not pay attention to an epidemic that is likely to affect them or a loved one. * The recent World Cancer Report from the World Health Organization

Rx for Hope by Nick Chen,David Tabatsky Pdf

In our current era of rapidly developing cancer drugs and therapies, we also see improvement of cancer treatment outcomes stagnating when it comes to determining quality of life or long-term survival. This is because while new treatments are making small incremental progress in outcomes, most cancer patients still depend on conventional methods that are both toxic and ineffective. While new cancer drugs are becoming more precise or targeted, less attention is being paid to the overall health and wellbeing of the patient, which we propose is essential for long-term cancer control and improving a patient’s quality of life. Rx for Hope, backed by rigorous science and real-life patient cases, calls for an urgent reevaluation of the current conventional approach to cancer treatments and encourages a progressive treatment model combining metronomic low-dose chemotherapy with complementary integrative medicine. Along with new, breakthrough immunotherapy drugs, these treatments can potentially create a response powerful enough to not only eradicate the presence of cancer but also to prevent it from returning. Because every 23 seconds someone in America is diagnosed with cancer, the number of people affected is growing rapidly. The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly two million new patients will need treatment in the coming year. Judging by current trends and methods of treatment, far too many of these people will be treated without the benefits of low-dose chemotherapy, and even less will enjoy the positive impact of immune-supportive complementary integrative medicine. Rx for Hope offers insight into a powerful way of treating cancer that patients and doctors can implement immediately for optimal results.

The Overparenting Solution by George S. Glass,David Tabatsky Pdf

Features pragmatic, reasonable advice for how parents can raise their children effectively and lovingly without overdoing it. Today, in the world of Covid-19, parents may be more anxious than ever as they aim to make sense of the changing landscape of education. We see now that within the context of social distancing, which we may be facing for quite some time, families are experiencing a mix of positive and negative influences, including new stressors, which cause division and even danger, while at the same time, some families are discovering novel ways of remaining blended together. Regardless, families must find their way forward to overcome bad decisions and embrace these challenging circumstances. The generational desire of parents to want their children to have more opportunity and success than they did has become outdated for many families, especially those of means, but this has not stopped parents from going too far with their children, from pushing them into needless high-pressure situations to protecting them from any possible failure or disappointment. While we know that it is getting harder and harder to get into a select college, and after graduation, it is often more difficult to find a “prestigious” job, parents are not doing their kids any favors by resorting to any means necessary to ensure what they define as their offspring’s success. This work shows readers how to parent better, not more, allowing children to make their own mistakes and learn from them, and grow into functioning, self-reliant adults.

Holistic Dental Care by Stephen A. Lawrence Pdf

Stephen A. Lawrence introduces readers to holistic dental care and its role in overall health. Most people America would like to maintain healthy teeth and gums during their lifetime. While conventional dental care still relies on outdated treatment methods, including the use of toxic elements such as mercury and fluoride, this is not the way dentistry must be practiced, and more and more patients are beginning to realize that there are safer, more effective ways to care for their teeth and gums. Holistic Dental Care: Your Mind, Body, and Spirit Guide to Optimal Health and a Beautiful Smile presents a positive, detailed, and easy-to-read argument for the benefits of a more open-minded, progressive, and integrative approach to dental care and overall health. Scientific studies suggest that our mind/body relationship, psychological function, physical activity, and the food we eat all affect us at biological levels, where our habits can alter our immune system and affect our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. When we get sick on any level, from an ordinary cold to a cavity or gum disease, it’s usually because of some imbalance in our immune system, often triggered by chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and toxins. Holistic dentistry addresses these issues by supporting a patient’s comprehensive health. Holistic dentist Stephen A. Lawrence’s new work introduces readers to safer, gentler, and more efficient way of treating their mouths and bodies, along with addressing their overall wellness. He offers a reader-friendly tour through how our body works, and approaches dental health through the lens of comprehensive wellness and summarizes current holistic dental healthcare ideas and products––to stop cavities and gum disease, rebuild teeth at home, and positively affect patients and those around them––as we strive to spread wellness worldwide. Considering the current explosion of green living all over America, the increased awareness of how toxins affect our health, and a rising interest in bettering our general quality of life through wellness and mindfulness, this work fills a gap in understanding how holistic dental health care can be part of an overall approach to healthier living now.

Life Reimagined by Barbara Bradley Hagerty Pdf

A dynamic and inspiring exploration of the new science that is redrawing the future for people in their forties, fifties, and sixties for the better—and for good. There’s no such thing as an inevitable midlife crisis, Barbara Bradley Hagerty writes in this provocative, hopeful book. It’s a myth, an illusion. New scientific research explodes the fable that midlife is a time when things start to go downhill for everybody. In fact, midlife can be a great new adventure, when you can embrace fresh possibilities, purposes, and pleasures. In Life Reimagined, Hagerty explains that midlife is about renewal: It’s the time to renegotiate your purpose, refocus your relationships, and transform the way you think about the world and yourself. Drawing from emerging information in neurology, psychology, biology, genetics, and sociology—as well as her own story of midlife transformation—Hagerty redraws the map for people in midlife and plots a new course forward in understanding our health, our relationships, even our futures.

Reimagining (Bio)Medicalization, Pharmaceuticals and Genetics by Susan E. Bell,Anne E. Figert Pdf

In recent years medicalization, the process of making something medical, has gained considerable ground and a position in everyday discourse. In this multidisciplinary collection of original essays, the authors expertly consider how issues around medicalization have developed, ways in which it is changing, and the potential shapes it will take in the future. They develop a unique argument that medicalization, biomedicalization, pharmaceuticalization and geneticization are related and co-evolving processes, present throughout the globe. This is an ideal addition to anthropology, sociology and STS courses about medicine and health.

Enduring Cancer by Dwaipayan Banerjee Pdf

In Enduring Cancer Dwaipayan Banerjee explores the efforts of Delhi's urban poor to create a livable life with cancer as patients and families negotiate an overextended health system unequipped to respond to the disease. Owing to long wait times, most urban poor cancer patients do not receive a diagnosis until it is too late to treat the disease effectively. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the city's largest cancer care NGO and at India's premier public health hospital, Banerjee describes how, for these patients, a cancer diagnosis is often the latest and most serious in a long series of infrastructural failures. In the wake of these failures, Banerjee tracks how the disease then distributes itself across networks of social relations, testing these networks for strength and vulnerability. Banerjee demonstrates how living with and alongside cancer is to be newly awakened to the fragility of social ties, some already made brittle by past histories, and others that are retested for their capacity to support.

The Invisible Kingdom by Meghan O'Rourke Pdf

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER FINALIST FOR THE 2022 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR NONFICTION Named one of the BEST BOOKS OF 2022 by NPR, The New Yorker, Time, and Vogue “Remarkable.” –Andrew Solomon, The New York Times Book Review "At once a rigorous work of scholarship and a radical act of empathy.”—Esquire "A ray of light into those isolated cocoons of darkness that, at one time or another, may afflict us all.” —The Wall Street Journal "Essential."—The Boston Globe A landmark exploration of one of the most consequential and mysterious issues of our time: the rise of chronic illness and autoimmune diseases A silent epidemic of chronic illnesses afflicts tens of millions of Americans: these are diseases that are poorly understood, frequently marginalized, and can go undiagnosed and unrecognized altogether. Renowned writer Meghan O’Rourke delivers a revelatory investigation into this elusive category of “invisible” illness that encompasses autoimmune diseases, post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome, and now long COVID, synthesizing the personal and the universal to help all of us through this new frontier. Drawing on her own medical experiences as well as a decade of interviews with doctors, patients, researchers, and public health experts, O’Rourke traces the history of Western definitions of illness, and reveals how inherited ideas of cause, diagnosis, and treatment have led us to ignore a host of hard-to-understand medical conditions, ones that resist easy description or simple cures. And as America faces this health crisis of extraordinary proportions, the populations most likely to be neglected by our institutions include women, the working class, and people of color. Blending lyricism and erudition, candor and empathy, O’Rourke brings together her deep and disparate talents and roles as critic, journalist, poet, teacher, and patient, synthesizing the personal and universal into one monumental project arguing for a seismic shift in our approach to disease. The Invisible Kingdom offers hope for the sick, solace and insight for their loved ones, and a radical new understanding of our bodies and our health.

Establishing Effective Patient Navigation Programs in Oncology by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,Health and Medicine Division,Board on Health Care Services,National Cancer Policy Forum Pdf

Delivering high-quality cancer care to all patients presents numerous challenges, including difficulties with care coordination and access. Patient navigation is a community-based service delivery intervention designed to promote access to timely diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other chronic diseases by eliminating barriers to care, and has often been proposed and implemented to address these challenges. However, unresolved questions include where patient navigation programs should be deployed, and which patients should be prioritized to receive navigation services when resources are limited. To address these issues and facilitate discussion on how to improve navigation services for patients with cancer, the National Cancer Policy Forum of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop on November 13 and 14, 2017. At this workshop, a broad range of experts and stakeholders, including clinicians, navigators, researchers, and patients, explored which patients need navigation and who should serve as navigators, and the benefits of navigation and current gaps in the evidence base.
