Wipe away the ashes of civilization and peer into a pit of atomic glass to witness the haunting visions of World War IV from today’s greatest minds in science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Contributors include: Jonathan Maberry Steven Barnes D.J. Butler Brad R. Torgersen Martin L. Shoemaker T.C. McCarthy Eric James Stone Stephen Lawson Freddy Costello and Michael Z. Williamson Laird Barron Nick Mamatas Brian Trent Erica L. Satifka Kevin Andrew Murphy Maurice Broaddus and Rodney Carlstrom David VonAllmen Deborah A. Wolf Nina Kiriki Hoffman Julie Frost Weston Ochse John Langan Will they find answers there, or is this only the first stage in their search? At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). About Weird World War IV: "Editor Hazlett follows Weird World War III by looking even further into the future at the war after the next big one. As such, these 21 skirmishes are not straight extrapolations of present-day politics but veer into alternate timelines in which dinosaurs invade to escape their own troubles (“Reflections in Lizard-Time” by Brian Trent) or artificial intelligences reshape humans into new species suitable for the poisoned Earth (“Mea Kaua” by Stephen Lawson). Cosmic horrors are summoned by combatants in “Deep Trouble” by Jonathan Mayberry and beaten back by “elder beasts” from African myths in “The Door of Return” by Maurice Broaddus and Rodney Carlstrom. Not every story quite fits the theme of a war to follow the next war, but all feature postapocalyptic settings where conflict brews. The best, like “Wave Forms” by Nina Kiriki Hoffman and John Langan’s Arthurian “Future and Once,” keep the battle to come a tantalizing tease. The broad ideological range here—“The Eureka Alternative” by Brad Torgersen blames the apocalypse on wokeness, while Weston Ochse’s “A Day in the Life of a Suicide Geomancer” critiques the MAGA crowd—means not every story will be for every military SF reader, but the sheer weirdness of many of these pieces is a testament to the genre’s creativity and verve." —Publishers Weekly "Although this might seem to be a limited theme, the various authors have risen to the challenge, and produced a wide variety of fiction incorporating science fiction and fantasy concepts into tales of struggles that do not always take place on battlefields." —Tangent

Seven Forges by James A. Moore Pdf

An expedition into a hostile world leads to the discovery of a forgotten—and potentially dangerous—race in this “well-written epic fantasy series kickoff” (Publishers Weekly) Captain Merros Dulver is the first in many lifetimes to find a path beyond the great mountains of the Seven Forges and encounter, at long last, the half-forgotten race who live there. And it would appear that they were expecting him. But when he returns home, an entourage of strangers in tow, he starts to wonder if his discovery is truly something to celebrate—for the gods of this lost race are the gods of war, and their memories of that far-off cataclysm have not faded. The people of Fellein have lived with the legends of the Blasted Lands for many centuries. Lying far to the north, the Lands are a desolate, impassable place—the legacy of an ancient time of cataclysm. But even the dangers of the Blasted Lands cannot stop the occasional expedition into its fringes, where people search for any trace of the ancients and oft-rumored riches that once lived there. Psycho Shop by Alfred Bester & Roger Zelazny Pdf

“A dark acid curio, brisk, fast, memorable, a rare improvisational duet from two of our best.”—Greg Bear “Alfred Bester was one of the handful of writers who invented modern science fiction.” —Harry Harrison, author of Adventures of the Stanless Steel Rat “Let there be light, and let there always be Roger Zelazny.”—Philip José Farmer, author of To Your Scattered Bodies Go From Publishers Weekly: This odd novel, left incomplete when Bester died in 1987, was finished by Zelazny, who himself died in 1995. In his introduction, Bear refers to Bester (The Deceivers) and Zelazny (Donnerjack) as masters of SF jazz, geniuses of improvisation, and the book has that feel to it. The plot is full of bizarre twists and turns. Neat ideas surface and disappear in an eyeblink and characters transform radically from one page to the next. Alf Noir, an investigative reporter, is sent to Rome to look into the mysterious Black Place of the Soul-Changer and its enigmatic proprietor, Adam Maser. Alf discovers that Maser is a Psychbroker, a sort of pawnbroker of the spirit, dealing in emotions, talents and psychological traits. Want more courage, the ability to see into the infrared, an understanding of ancient Persian? Maser will trade it to you for your mind-reading ability, or a rare coin, or perhaps for the secret of the collective unconscious. Alf discovers that Maser isn't human, but a highly evolved cat from the far future. Nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted, not even Maser's sexy assistant, an evolved snake with whom Alf has an affair. There's much fun to be had here, but the book doesn't represent either writer in top form. Bester's style in the first part of the novel seems dated, and things don't gel until Zelazny takes over halfway through the book. Vintage has brought Bester's finest work back into print, and for this it deserves praise, but this novel is most likely to appeal to Zelazny's much larger readership.
