Nigeria by Musa Adziba Mambula Pdf

This is the book for those who are seeking an understanding of the roots of the religious and political conflict in Northern Nigeria. This book is for those who want to understand the role of ethnic communities in peacemaking. Complementing ethnic commitments, the book also explores the dynamic ways ethnic loyalties can fray the fabric needed for healthy ethnic diversity. The issues of unity within diversity are addressed forthrightly. This book is for those who want to explore the essential nature of Islam as a peace movement. Complementing that quest, the author also explores the essence of the gospel as a movement for reconciliation. This book is for those who seek a realistic understanding of the nature of conflict and its seemingly intractable stranglehold on societies enmeshed in Muslim-Christian discord. This book is for those who are enlivened and challenged by narratives that unlock the central themes of political and spiritual engagement. Horrible accounts of conflict are described. Also included are accounts of earnest quest for peacemaking in times like these. This book is for those who are committed to the quest for a way for political and spiritual resources to enhance peacemaking cooperation. It is a quest for a way for political, economic, and religious themes to flow together in creating healthy civil society wherein both Muslim and Christian will work together in a quest for collegial relations. This book is for those who are earnestly committed to walking the way of Jesus in embracing the suffering love revealed in the open and inviting arms of the Lamb of God on the cross. This book is a revelation of the reconciling love of Jesus, bringing hope within broken hearts.

Inter-ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution in Nigeria by Ernest E. Uwazie,Isaac Olawale Albert,G. N. Uzoigwe Pdf

Since 1982, Nigeria has experienced more than ten large scale ethnic or religious riots in its major cities. These violent clashes have wreaked economic, political, and social havoc; caused an enormous number of deaths and injuries; and posed serious obstacles to Nigeria's sociopolitical development as well as retarded efforts at nation-building. The papers collected in this book serve as a critical part of an overall objective to develop and promote mechanisms for the understanding and resolution of ethnic and religious conflicts in Nigeria. Both academic and community leaders address various aspects of these conflicts, and Uwazie offers several thoughtful options for their successful resolution. Inter-Ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution in Nigeria will interest students of African history and current affairs, scholars of anthropology and ethnicity studies, and those involved in international relations and peace studies.

Religion in War and Peace in Africa by Margee Ensign,Jean-Pierre Karegeye Pdf

Religion in War and Peace in Africa shows how "Religious extremism" transcends the realm of belief, analysing current armed conflicts in Africa with perpetrators claiming to act in accord with their religion and moral values. Many African countries today are beset by armed conflicts carried out by different radical groups. In most such cases, religion has been used to incite extremism and to justify violence and exclusion. Perpetrators who seek to violently impose their "order" believe, or claim, that they are acting in accord with their religious and values. Scholars, peacemakers, Religious leaders, and Military officers explore peace initiatives and security managements. These rich, informative and path-breaking contributions in this book span the spectrum from the prevention of violence through peace initiatives and the analyses of the many complex historical, political, economic, demographic and ideological causes of violence to the role of traditional religions, and military intervention. Showing how religious leaders, scholars, peacekeepers, policy-makers, and military officers and others need to join their efforts in better understanding the intersections between religion and conflict, and to engage in shared missions focused on preventive actions and peace initiatives, Religion in War and Peace in Africa will be of great interest to scholars of military studies, African studies, peacekeeping, religion and conflict. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of Peace Review.

Islam and Conflict in Northern Nigeria by Yinka Olomojobi Pdf

This is not a book on Islam, either as a religion, a legal system or a way of life. It is about the role of Islam in the dynamics of ethno-religious conflict, particularly in northern Nigeria. Nigeria has a complex ethno-religious profile, and, thanks partly to the British colonial administration, a myriad of individual groups professing various faiths and belonging to different ethnicities have found themselves in a tense, unsettled and competitive political system. The variants of Islam in an increasingly tense society, such as northern Nigeria, is unique, given the heritage of this part of Nigeria that has become a source for communal unity rather than a force for division. From this particular standpoint, the book explains and evaluates the symbiotic relationship between Islam, conflict and conflict prevention. The book is thoroughly documented, meticulously sourced, deeply researched and thus provides valuable and factual information on the construction of Islam and conflict in northern Nigeria.

The Politics of Peacebuilding in Africa by Thomas Kwasi Tieku,Amanda Coffie,Mary Boatemaa Setrana,Akin Taiwo Pdf

This interdisciplinary book brings together innovative chapters that address the entire spectrum of the African peacebuilding landscape and showcases findings from original studies on peacebuilding. With a range of perspectives, the chapters cover the full gamut of peacebuilding (i.e. the continuum between conflict prevention and post-war reconstruction) and address both micro and macro peacebuilding issues in the five regions of Africa. Moving beyond the tendency to focus on a single case study or few case studies in peacebuilding scholarship, the chapters examine critical peacebuilding issues at the local, state, regional, extra-regional, and continental levels in Africa. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of African politics, peace and security studies, regional organizations, development studies, state-building, and more broadly to international relations, public policy, diplomacy, international organizations, and the wider social sciences.

Pathways to Peacebuilding by Uchenna D. Anyanwu Pdf

Given the consistent challenge of Islamist acute violence, particularly in Nigeria, this monograph attempts to respond to the question: How can Jesus's followers pattern response to violence after Jesus's model demonstrated in his triumph over death, evil, sin, and violence through staurocentric pathways? And how can Jesus's followers in Nigeria adopt the same staurocentric model in order to not only overcome acute violence within the country but also to extend hands, heads, hearts, and homes of staurocentric forgiveness, hospitality, and other practices toward Muslims? In this study, I posit that peacebuilding contextual theology be grounded on the mystery of the cross (σταυρός-stauros)--a theologico-theoretical framework that the church in Nigeria should espouse in order to position herself to extend hands, heads, hearts, and homes of staurocentric practices, whose appropriation must be undertaken through constructive and critical integration of the God-given African peacebuilding concepts autochthonous to Africa's mosaic cultural contexts. The pivotal thesis is that the staurocentric model remains the triune God's instrument for triumphing over violence, and thus should be espoused by Jesus's followers in every era and context for peacebuilding in contexts of violence through a triadic constructive and critical integration of indigenous peacebuilding concepts.

Religious Freedom and Religious Pluralism in Africa by Pieter Coertzen,M Christian Green,Len Hansen Pdf

ÿAfrica continues to be a region with strong commitments to religious freedom and religious pluralism. These, however, are rarely mere facts on the ground ? they are legal, political, social, and theological projects that require considerable effort to realise. This volume ? compiling the proceedings of the third annual conference of the African Consortium for Law and Religion Studies ? focuses on various issues which vastly effect the understanding of religious pluralism in Africa. These include, amongst others, religious freedom as a human right, the importance of managing religious pluralism, and the permissibility of religious practice and observance in South African public schools.
