Rembrandt by Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann Pdf

A landmark book that casts critical light on one of Rembrandt’s most iconic paintings In The Nightwatch, Rembrandt turns his portrayal of eighteen prominent Amsterdam citizens as members of a militia company into one of the world’s most fascinating works of art, one that evokes censure as well as praise. The painting, however, was not an eccentric vision but a thoughtful reworking of a longstanding tradition of militia portraiture. In this classic book, Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann shows how Rembrandt chose motifs, colors, actions, and setting to emphasize the historic role of the militia in Amsterdam and the social standing of the men portrayed, and how contemporary viewers associated costumes and actions with events of the past and familiar circumstances of the period when the painting was made. Meticulously reconstructing the artist’s intentions and the viewer’s response, Haverkamp-Begemann sheds critical light on the startling young woman in gold and other visual elements of this remarkable work.

Rembrandt's Roughness by Nicola Suthor Pdf

Roughness is the sensual quality most often associated with Rembrandt's idiosyncratic style. It best defines the specific structure of his painterly textures, which subtly capture and engage the imagination of the beholder. Rembrandt's Roughness examines how the artist's unconventional technique pushed the possibilities of painting into startling and unexpected realms. Drawing on the phenomenological insights of Edmund Husserl as well as firsthand accounts by Rembrandt's contemporaries, Nicola Suthor provides invaluable new perspectives on many of the painter's best-known masterpieces, including The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deyman, The Return of the Prodigal Son, and Aristotle with a Bust of Homer. She focuses on pictorial phenomena such as the thickness of the paint material, the visibility of the colored priming, and the dramatizing element of chiaroscuro, showing how they constitute Rembrandt's most effective tools for extending the representational limits of painting. Suthor explores how Rembrandt developed a visually precise handling of his artistic medium that forced his viewers to confront the paint itself as a source of meaning, its challenging complexity expressed in the subtlest stroke of his brush. A beautifully illustrated meditation on a painter like no other, Rembrandt's Roughness reflects deeply on the intellectual challenge that Rembrandt's unrivaled artistry posed to the art theory of his time and its eminent role in the history of art today.

Aesthetic Spaces by Brigitte Peucker Pdf

Films provide valuable spaces for aesthetic experimentation and analysis, for cinema's openness to other media has always allowed it to expand its own. In Aesthetic Spaces, Brigitte Peucker shows that when painterly or theatrical conventions are appropriated by the medium of film, the dissonant effects produced open it up to intermedial reflection and tell us a great deal about cinema itself. The films studied in these chapters include those by Abbas Kiarostami, Alfred Hitchcock, Michelangelo Antonioni, Jean-Luc Godard, Carl Th. Dreyer, Peter Greenaway, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Ingmar Bergman, Jacques Rivette, Fritz Lang, F. W. Murnau, Lars von Trier, Spike Jonze, Éric Rohmer, Lech Majewski, and others. Where two media are in evidence in these films, there is usually a third, and often theater mediates between film and painting. Aesthetic Spaces interrogates issues of cinematic space and mise-en-scène from different but interconnected theoretical perspectives, organizing its chapters around some of the formal principles—space, spectator, frame, color and lighting, props, décor, and actor—that shape films. Drawing on the older arts to renew cinema, the films examined deploy paintings as material: Poussin and Bruegel, Rembrandt, Hals and Klimt, and medieval illustrations and modernist abstractions are used to expand our notions of cinematic space. Peucker shows that when different media come together in film, they create effects of dissonance out of which new modes of looking may arise.

Nightwatching by Peter Greenaway Pdf

In 2007, the internationally renowned filmmaker Peter Greenaway ("The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover; The Draughtsman's Contract") will release "Nightwatching," a feature-length study of the life and loves of the eighteenth-century Dutch painter, Rembrandt, via his controversial masterpiece, "The Night Watch," an ensemble painting which depicts the identification of a murderer. According to Greenaway, the painting is "Rembrandt's "J'accuse."" There is a conspiracy painted in Rembrandt's "The Night Watch." The sinister title of the painting alone suggests we should look for it . Is this a painting, or an act of theater, or a still from a film?" In this accompanying artist's book, Greenaway offers fans a glimpse into his own artistic process, with written analyses of each of the characters in the painting followed by a wealth of enlarged, close-up details in which brush marks practically jump from the page.

The Mysteries of Cinema: Movies and Imagination by Peter Conrad Pdf

Ranging from the late nineteenth century to the present day, this exhilarating survey by cultural critic Peter Conrad explores the ways film has changed how we see the world. This is a thematic roller-coaster ride through cinema history, with film expert Peter Conrad in the seat beside you. Thoroughly international, this book ranges from Fay Wray to Satyajit Ray, from Buster Keaton to Kurosawa, from westerns to nouvelle vague. Conrad explores the medium’s relationship to speed, technology, fantasy, horror, dream, color, sound, light, and shadow with reference to scores of films, from the earliest nineteenth-century silent experiments to the latest multisensory Hollywood blockbusters. The author’s insights are amplified by voices from inside and outside the industry: directors and critics are included alongside artists, writers, philosophers, and historians ranging from Leo Tolstoy to Salvador Dalí, Theodor Adorno to Philip Roth. Arranged by topics, such as “Meta-Movie” and “The Physics of Film,” rather than chronological events, The Mysteries of Cinema focuses on film’s otherworldly, hypnotic, and magical qualities. Perfect for both movie fans who will discover new films and directors, and for students of film who will see familiar classics in a new light, this volume is full of unique insights into the genre. Combining his vast knowledge with a forensic eye for a director’s every quirk and mannerism, Conrad offers a fascinating and thrilling exploration of film.
