Remote Automatic Weather Station for Resource and Fire Management Agencies (Classic Reprint) by John R Warren Pdf
Excerpt from Remote Automatic Weather Station for Resource and Fire Management Agencies Meteor-burst communications systems utilize the ionized trails of meteors to effectively bounce radio frequency transmissions over great distances (up to 500 miles [804 km] or so). The usable time of an ionized trail is short, but it is often sufficient to establish a two-way path with a duration adequate for data bursts that could contain weather data. Experimentation has arrived at the statistical probabilities of success, number of inter rogations, etc., for various parts of the western United States and Alaska at different times of the year. A meteor burst system is in use for snow measurements. At the time of selection of the raws-goes, the meteor-burst system was not operational; planned snow measurement sites were not compatible with fire weather sites; the remote stations were larger (some requiring commercial power); and there were no cost or performance advantages. Opera tion was also limited to the western United States and Alaska. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Review of the Forest Service Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) Network by John Zachariassen Pdf
"The RAWS network and RAWS data-use systems are closely reviewed and summarized in this report. RAWS is an active program created by the many land-management agencies that share a common need for accurate and timely weather data from remote locations for vital operational and program decisions specific to wildland and prescribed fires. A RAWS measures basic observable weather parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation as well as "fuel stick" temperature. Data from almost 1,900 stations deployed across the conterminous United States, Alaska, and Hawaii are now routinely used to calculate and forecast daily fire danger indices, components, and adjective ratings. Fire business applications include the National Fire Danger Rating System (NFDRS), fire behavior, and fire use. Findings point to the fact that although the RAWS program works and provides needed weather data in support of fire operations, there are inefficiencies and significant problem areas that require leadership attention at the National level."

Advances in Bioclimatology_4 by Gerald Stanhill Pdf
This volume contains reviews on five different aspects of bioclimatology: (1) The establishment, maintenance and use of data from automatic weather station networks for agricultural purposes; (2) Techniques for estimating global and ultraviolet irradiance at the earth's surface, and the net radiation balance from operational satellite observations; (3) Mathematical models of the effects of climate on energy and mass balance in crop production; (4) Paleoecological and experimental studies of the response of stomatal density to changes in the atmospheric CO2 concentrations; and (5) The sensory and behavioral responses of insects and other invertebrates to small CO2 gradients resulting from plant and animal metabolism, considering the global changes in CO2 concentration and air temperature.

Forest Fire Laboratory at Riverside and Fire Research in California by Carl C. Wilson Pdf
The need for protection from uncontrolled fire in California was identified by Abbott Kinney, Chairman of the State Board of Forestry, more than 75 years before the construc-tion of the Riverside Forest Fire Laboratory. With the organization of the USDA Forest Service the need for an effective fire protection organization became apparent. In response, a somewhat fragmented research program got under way in the 19 10's. Although the research was successful in reducing fire damage undermost conditions, severe fire years still made it clear that a strong cohesive fire research effort, headquartered at an adequate laboratory was necessary. However, the Fire Laboratory did not "just happen." It was the result of considerable organized public and private support. During the 50 years prior to the dedication of the Laboratory, and the 25 years since, there has been an effort to balance a pragmatic approach toward dealing directly with the fire manager, and also maintaining scientific excellence. There are currently six research projects at the Laboratory with emphases on fire management and the beneficial use of fire, forest recreation, effects of air pollution on forest ecosystem, and watershed management
