Renaissance Papers 2003 by Aaron Landau Pdf

Essays on Shakespeare, Elizabeth Cary, Erasmus, George Puttenham, William Tyndale, and the Virginia Company, among other topics. Renaissance Papers is a collection of the best scholarly essays submitted each year to the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. The conference accepts papers on all subjects relating to the Renaissance -- music, art, history, literature, etc. -- from scholars all over North America and the world. Of the ten essays in the 2003 volume, three have to do with Shakespeare; among the topics here are Shakespeare and social uprising in The Merchant of Venice, politics and masculinity in Julius Caesar, and the churching of women in Taming of the Shrew; another essay on Renaissance drama focuses attention on Elizabeth Cary's Mariam. Other essays consider Erasmus and the problem of strife, George Puttenham as a comedic artificer, the hermeneutics of William Tyndale, the editorial disputes in The Adventures of Master F.J., the wooing of Amoret and Scudamour, and the "writing" of the Virginia Company. Contributors: Jessica Wolfe, Gerald Snare, Jon Pope, Elizabeth Watson, Wayne Erickson, Mary Free, Amy Scott, Aaron Landau, Jeanne Roberts, and Jay Stubblefield. M. Thomas Hester is professor of English, and Christopher Cobb is assistant professor of English, both at North Carolina State University.

Renaissance Papers 2011 by Bryan Herek Pdf

Annual volume presenting the best essays received by the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. Renaissance Papers collects the best scholarly essays submitted each year to the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. The 2011 volume opens with three essays focused on Shakespeare: one on Pauline presences in 1 Henry 4, one on the play of letters in Love's Labour's Lost, and another on "productive violence" in Titus Andronicus. The volume then turns to links between Renaissance drama and the wider culture, with essays on Ramistic method in Marlowe's Massacre at Paris, "overflowing" emotion in generically experimental plays of the first decade of the seventeenth century, and the "birdliming" of characters in Bartholomew Fair and Othello. Next come essays devoted to a trio of lyric poets: Sir Philip Sidney, whose frustrated desire leads to the "sacrificial sublime"; Fulke Greville, whose quest for certainty is complicated by his radical Calvinism; and George Herbert, whose spiritual transformations are inspired by the machinery of court masques. The volume closes with essays showcasing a range of interests in the history of ideas: Trinitarianism in Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, social satire and the norms of Christian exemplarity, and the humane censorship of Cardinal Bellarmine. Contributors: William A. Coulter, L. Grant Hamby, Bryan Herek, C. Bryan Love, Julia P. McLeod, Kara Northway, James Pearce, Paul J. Stapleton, Jessica Tooker, Lewis Walker, Kathryn Walls, Emma Annette Wilson. Andrew Shifflett and Edward Gieskes are Associate Professors of English at the University of South Carolina, Columbia.

Renaissance Papers 2022 by Jim Pearce,Lorenz A. Hindrichsen,Ward J. Risvold,Heather Hirschfeld,William Given Pdf

Renaissance Papers collects the best scholarly essays submitted each year to the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. The theme of this year's volume is "sacred places, secular spaces." It begins with a "who is it" mystery, examining two portraits by Raphael that embody the sacred and the profane, respectively. The next essay engages both the sacred and pictorial innovationsin Holbein's predella The Dead Christ; while the following one views the sacred through the critical lens of race, arguing that Northern European churchmen normalized views on race by strategically placing racialized artifacts in their churches. The scene then shifts to 16th century Venice, where the Greek community contended with local authorities over the right to establish a sacred site for interring their dead. The next two essays swing the pendulum toward the secular: an essay on ecocriticism suggests that the early modern period expelled the sacred from nature and presents a Rabelaisian antidote, while an essay on Spenser's The Faerie Queene presents it as a blueprint for colonization. The volume concludes with Contributors: Julie Fox-Horton, Lorenz A. Hindrichsen, Heather Hirschfeld, Elizabeth Lisot-Nelson, Jesse Russell, Victor Velázquez, John N. Christopher Marlowe in Context by Emily C. Bartels,Emma Josephine Smith Pdf

A contemporary of William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe was one of the most influential early modern dramatists, whose life and mysterious death have long been the subject of critical and popular speculation. This collection sets Marlowe's plays and poems in their historical context, exploring his world and his wider cultural influence. Chapters by leading international scholars discuss both his major and lesser-known works. Divided into three sections, 'Marlowe's works', 'Marlowe's world', and 'Marlowe's reception', the book ranges from Marlowe's relationship with his own audience through to adaptations of his plays for modern cinema. Other contexts for Marlowe include history and politics, religion and science. Discussions of Marlowe's critics and Marlowe's appeal today, in performance, literature and biography, show how and why his works continue to resonate; and a comprehensive further reading list provides helpful suggestions for those who want to find out more.

Revaluing Renaissance Art by Gabriele Neher,Rupert Shepherd Pdf

This title was first published in 2000: Michelangelo gave his painting of "Leda and the Swan" to an apprentice rather than hand it over to the emissary of the Duke of Ferrar, who had commissioned it. He was apparently disgusted by the failure of the emissary - who was probably more used to buying pigs than discussing art - to accord the picture and the artist the value they deserved. Any discussion of works of art and material culture implicitly assigns them a set of values. Whether these values be monetary, cultural or religious, they tend to constrict the ways in which such works can be discussed. The variety of potential forms of valuation becomes particularly apparent during the Italian Renaissance, when relations between the visual arts and humanistic studies were undergoing rapid changes against an equally fluid social, economic and political background. In this volume, 13 scholars explicitly examine some of the complex ways in which a variety of values might be associated with Italian Renaissance material culture. Papers range from a consideration of the basic values of the materials employed by artists, to the manifestation of cultural values in attitudes to dress and domestic devotion. By illuminating some of the ways in which values were constructed, they provide a broader context within which to evaluate Renaissance material culture.

The Bible, Gender, and Reception History: The Case of Job's Wife by Katherine Low Pdf

The Bible, Gender, and Reception History: The Case of Job's Wife investigates the fleeting appearance in the Bible of Job's wife and its impact on the imaginations of readers throughout history. It begins by presenting key interpretive gaps in the biblical text concerning Job and his wife, explaining the way gender studies offers guiding principles with which the author engages a reception history of their marriage. After analyzing Job and his wife within medieval Christian theology of Eden, the author identifies ways in which Job's wife visually aligns with medieval images of Satan. The volume explores portrayals of Job and his wife in publications on marriage and gender roles in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, moving onto an investigation of William Blake's sharp artistic divergence from the common tradition in his representation of Job's wife as a shrew. In the exploration of societal portrayals of Job and his Wife throughout history, this book discovers how arguments about marriage intertwine with not only gender roles, but also, with political, social, and historical movements.
