Renegade Dreams by Laurence Ralph Pdf

An ethnographic study of the residents of a violent West Chicago neighborhood and how they cope from day to day. As with war, much of our focus on inner-city violence is on the death toll, but the reality is that far more victims live to see another day and must copy with their injuries—both physical and psychological—for the rest of their lives. Renegade Dreams is their story. Walking the streets of one of Chicago’s most violent neighborhoods, Laurence Ralph talks to parents, grandparents, and pastors, to activists and gang leaders, to the maimed and the hopeful, to aspiring rappers, athletes, or those who simply want safe passage to school or a steady job. Seeking to understand how they cope, he ultimately shows that the injuries they carry are—like dreams—a crucial form of resilience. Praise for Renegade Dreams “A tour de force—extremely well written and engaging, and replete with original insights. Once I began reading Ralph’s book, I had a difficult time putting it down. His field research is fascinating. And his explicit discussion of the interconnections of inner-city injury with government and community institutions, as well as how it is related to historical and social processes, is a major contribution.” —William Julius Wilson, author of The Truly Disadvantaged “Ralph’s Chicago is peopled by characters we’ve seen before . . . but they breathe and bounce throughout his pages like more than just rehashed stock figures in some ongoing morality play about urban black pathology. Thoroughly researched and powerfully told, Renegade Dream is a paradigm-shifting anthropological rejoinder to popular stereotypes and scholarly cant about “inner-city violence,” its causes, and its aftermath.” —John L. Jackson Jr., author of Thin Description “Astounding in its clarity and groundbreaking in its power. . . . The textures and rhythms of Ralph’s realist narrative are charged with critical insight and transcendental significance, making ethnography into a work of art.” —João Biehl, author of Vita “Theoretically rich and superbly written, this book exposes what is hidden in plain sight: the full humanity of people whose lives are greater than the sum of their pain and peril.” —Khalil Gibran Muhammad, author of The Condemnation of Blackness “An elegant, poetic, and sympathetic look at a West Side Chicago neighborhood [Ralph] calls Eastwood. . . . Recommended for readers interested in contemporary urban neighborhoods and Chicago history. An absorbing read for those who enjoyed the blend of history and narrative in William Shaw’s West Side: Young Men & Hip Hop in L.A..” —Library Journal

Renegades by Robert Harkins Pdf

In the wee hours of December 16, 1773, Boston, Massachusetts, citizens, in a feat of magnificent defiance, joined together in a tea party that would breathe into being the American Revolution, a conservative constitution, a sovereign people, and the United States. Today, more than two hundred years later, it's time for a new revolution. In Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response, author Robert Harkins outlines the reasons for a new revolution. It's not the British we must defy but the intellectual elite, whom Harkins calls the renegade liberal—as did George Orwell in his unpublished preface to Animal Farm. The intellectual elite seek to dismantle American civilization and diminish people they believe are so intellectually vacuous and religiously provincial they must, in all things great and small, be carefully monitored and told precisely what and how to think, believe, and live. This cannot be. Americans must discover again their ancient roots, their mythos, creed, and identity. They must commit themselves again to moral and rational excellence. Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response is a tribute to American virtue and serves a starting point for Americans to return to excellence. 'Renegades: Their Betrayal of America, Her Rebellion and Response is a historic treasure. Robert Harkins's understanding of history, culture, and America is unsurpassed; and these pages will reveal why past civilizations have gone extinct. More importantly, Harkins's words are a roadmap for each of us to preserve liberty and freedom for our children and grandchildren right here in America, man's last best hope on earth.' Jeff Crank, radio talk show host and Colorado Director of Americans for Prosperity Robert Harkins received his law degree from St. Mary's University in Texas, where he received honors for exceptional scholastic excellence in the disciplines of federal and constitutional law. He taught business and constitutional law as a guest teacher at the University of Texas and served as a Texas judge for seven years, during which time he graduated from the Texas and National Colleges of the Judiciary. He now lives with his wife, Hyosuk, in Colorado.

The Sultan's Renegades by Tobias P. Graf Pdf

The figure of the renegade - a European Christian or Jew who had converted to Islam and was now serving the Ottoman sultan - is omnipresent in all genres produced by those early modern Christian Europeans who wrote about the Ottoman Empire. As few contemporaries failed to remark, converts were disproportionately represented among those who governed, administered, and fought for the sultan. Unsurprisingly, therefore, renegades have attracted considerable attention from historians of Europe as well as students of European literature. Until very recently, however, Ottomanists have been surprisingly silent on the presence of Christian-European converts in the Ottoman military-administrative elite. The Sultan's Renegades inserts these 'foreign' converts into the context of Ottoman elite life to reorient the discussion of these individuals away from the present focus on their exceptionality, towards a qualified appreciation of their place in the Ottoman imperial enterprise and the Empire's relations with its neighbours in Christian Europe. Drawing heavily on Central European sources, this study highlights the deep political, religious, and cultural entanglements between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe beyond the Mediterranean Basin as the 'shared world' par excellence. The existence of such trans-imperial subjects is not only symptomatic of the Empire's ability to attract and integrate people of a great diversity of backgrounds, it also illustrates the extent to which the Ottomans participated in processes of religious polarization usually considered typical of Christian Europe in this period. Nevertheless, Christian Europeans remained ambivalent about those they dismissed as apostates and traitors, frequently relying on them for support in the pursuit of familial and political interests.

Renegades for Jesus by Maria Estelle Olivo Pdf

It was the year 2027 when the world was going through horrible times, and Jesus was observing everything from heaven. He came up with a perfect solution to fix it. Jesus turns to the Father and he says, "Father the world's problems are escalating and the people are more coldhearted. They are loving evil and hurting others because their love has diminished from their hearts. Many of them are committing heinous crimes and others are taking their lives because of the dilemmas of life pressure. The governments are becoming more corrupted. Do you see what the leader of Iran is planning to do? We must come up with an answer to the circumstances. We should select three souls to do our bidding on earth? What about these three?" "Yes, Son, let us select them. Matter of fact, we will call them the Renegades for Jesus." Meanwhile, the devil was observing everything that was happening on the earth, for people's hearts were wicked. Mother Nature was getting worse; therefore, he decides to come up with a plan of his own. His, son, Adam Bismarck was nearby him when he shares the plan. "You will disguise yourself as the savior of the world and make sure that everyone in the world takes the Mark of the Beast. I will assist you with the agenda.

Lives Uncovered by Nicholas Terpstra Pdf

Curated by acclaimed scholar Nicholas Terpstra, Lives Uncovered is a captivating collection of early modern primary sources organized around the human life cycle. The collection begins with a short essay titled "How to Read a Primary Source," which helps readers recognize different kinds of primary sources and introduces the idea of critical reading. A second brief essay, "Life Cycles in the Early Modern Period," details the organization of the volume and explains each stage in the life cycle within its historical context. Over 150 readings examine men and women from different social classes and different religious and racial groups, addressing topics that include sex and sexuality, food and drink, poverty, crime and punishment, religious tension and coexistence, and migration and emigration. Using a creative range of sources such as letters, wills, laws, diaries, fiction, and poems, Terpstra gives readers a comprehensive picture of everyday life in early modern Europe and in other parts of the globe that Europeans were beginning to settle and colonize. Each of the life-cycle chapters includes a combination of longer readings, shorter readings, and images. Every reading begins with a short introduction that sets the context of the primary source, while review questions complement the main themes of the readings. Over 30 illustrations serve as non-textual primary sources. An index is also provided.
