Renewing Pastoral Practice by Neil Pembroke Pdf

This is the first comprehensive treatment of the relationship between the doctrine of the Trinity and pastoral care and counselling. Neil Pembroke contends that an in-depth reflection on the relational dynamics in the Godhead has the capacity to radically renew pastoral practice. Pembroke applies the notion of relational space to care in a parish setting. The life of the triune God is defined by both closeness and open space. The divine persons indwell each other in love, but they also provide space for the expression of particularity. This principle of closeness-with-space is applied in three different pastoral contexts, namely, community life, spiritual friendship, and pastoral conversations. The specialized ministry of pastoral counselling is the focus in the second half of the book. Informing the various explorations is the principle of participation through love: the divine persons participate in each other's existence through loving self-communication. Pembroke shows how this trinitarian virtue is at the centre of three key counselling dynamics: the counselling alliance, empathy, and mirroring.

Journeying Toward Renewal by Melissa Bane Sevier Pdf

“Time to reflect. Time. This is what clergy renewal is about. To continue in ‘the heat of work’ our whole career is to rob ourselves and our congregations of the time we and they need to reflect on our lives and our call. Here is where change begins.” - Melisa Bane Sevier “Melissa Bane Sevier – fresh from (and refreshed by) a much-needed sabbatical – offers personal testimony, practical advice, and an array of helpful resources that will inspire and empower pastors to seek and then to drink deeply of a time apart. This is a moving statement from and on behalf of our hard-working clergy, written for them but also for those who care about their well-being and that of the congregations they serve.” - Dorothy C. Bass - Author, Receiving the Day: Christian Practices for Opening the Gift of Time “Vital congregational ministry depends on the leadership of pastors, priests, and rabbis whose hearts sing with vision, creativity, faith, competence, and passion. In Journeying toward Renewal Melissa Sevier uses her pastoral sensitivity to tell her own renewal story and the stories of those who have been lead in the planning and practice of renewal leave by the question “What will make my heart sing – again?” Whether you’re planning an extended time of renewal leave, or just trying to bring regular sabbath time back into your days and weeks, this book will be a trustworthy guide.” - Richard Bruesehoff - Director for Leadership Support, ELCA - Co-author of Clergy Renewal: The Alban Guide to Pastoral Sabbaticals

Andrew Fuller and the Evangelical Renewal of Pastoral Theology by Keith Grant Pdf

An exploration of the pastoral theology of Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) suggests that evangelical renewal did not only take place alongside the local church - missions, itinerancy, voluntary societies - but also within the congregation as the central tasks of dissenting pastoral ministry became, in the words of one diarist, 'very affecting and evangelical'. How did evangelicalism transform dissenting and Baptist churches in the eighteenth century? Is there a distinctively congregational expression of evangelicalism? And what contribution has evangelicalism made to pastoral theology? renewal did not only take place alongside the local church - missions, itinerancy, voluntary societies - but also within the congregation as dissenting pastoral ministry became, in the words of one diarist, 'very affecting and evangelical'.

Ongoing Renewal in the Church by Paul Pulikkan,Mathai Kadavil,Peter de Mey Pdf

The essays in this volume, dedicated as a Festschrift to Prof. Dr. Mathijs Lamberigts (KU Leuven), are scholarly reflections on the ongoing renewal in the Church, as articulated mainly against the background of research on Augustine and Vatican II studies. The volume discusses the views of Augustine on grace and free will, deification, and the theology of marriage. With regard to Vatican II, this book offers lasting contributions in the area of liturgy, interreligious dialogue, Catholic social teaching on the family and human ecology, and the role of women. In some essays systematic theology and pastoral practice are placed in mutual critical tension, so that both become more creative and mutually enriching. This tension is studied in relation to Scripture, the Church fathers, liturgy and particular issues such as eco-theology, methods of participatory pastoral leadership, and the common good.

By the Renewing of Your Minds by Ellen T. Charry Pdf

This book develops the thesis that classical Christian theology seeks to help believers flourish by knowing and loving God. Ellen Charry argues this premise by example, offering a close reading of a number of classical texts, from the New Testament era to the Reformation, including works of Paul, Augustine, Athanasius, Basil of Caesarea, Anselm, and Calvin. She points out the pastoral and moral aims that shape the teachings of these theologians on a wide range of topics, including the Trinity; human beings as created in the image of God; the incorporation of Jews and Gentiles into the body of Christ in baptism; the incarnation, death, and resurrection of Christ; and the divinity of the Holy Spirit. Charry explains that the very logic of their arguments is shaped by the author's concern for the goodness and happiness that should result from living into the doctrines. She further shows that although the spiritual and pastoral purposes of these writings are many and complex, they are invariably concerned to foster what modern people can, without difficulty, recognize as human dignity--what she calls "excellence"--in action, affection, and self-appraisal.

Sacred Pauses by April Yamasaki Pdf

In a fast-paced world full of distractions, spiritual practice can help us become more centered-more in touch with ourselves and others, more in touch with the world around us, more in touch with God. Sacred Pauses is an introduction to this more centered way of life. The author, a pastor in British Columbia, begins with her own longing for personal renewal. What would it take to feel renewed every day? Instead of waiting for a vacation to smooth out the tensions of life, instead of waiting until the end of the week to shed our weariness, what if we could take time out every day? Live a renewed life every day? Be refreshed by God every day? Sacred Pauses offers simple ways for readers to do just that. Each chapter explores a different spiritual practice-from the classic disciplines of Scripture reading and prayer to other creative approaches such as paying attention, making music, and having fun. With plenty of stories from real life and ideas to try, this book is personal and practical. Its flexible format is appropriate for personal use or in a group, every day or any time. A Perichoretic Pastoral Theology by Jim Horsthuis Pdf

This book articulates a perichoretic pastoral theology, offering a pastoral theological response to the question of how ministering persons practice ministry in communion with the triune God. Key elements from contemporary pastoral theology—theologies of human experience, concern for human suffering, and situational attentiveness—are drawn into conversation with the doctrine of perichoresis. Jim Horsthuis provides a vision for life and ministry in relational, participational and spiritual communion with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The chapters explore four spiritual movements that foster this vision: (1) the move from experience to relationship; (2) the move from concern to presence; (3) the move from competence to communion; and (4) the move from practice to prayer. The book represents a unique academic contribution to both pastoral theology and Trinitarian theology.

Ethnography as a Pastoral Practice by Mary Clark Moschella Pdf

Ethnography as a Pastoral Practice invites you to open your eyes, ears and hearts to your congregation. By listening to their stories you will not only find out who they are but help them to better claim whose they are. By studying the "texts" of your community, Mary Clark Moschella helps you to understand their "contexts." Moschella will inspire you through actual cases to be more prophetic and priestly in ministry. Ethnography as a Pastoral Practice will, in a step-by-step fashion, help you and your congregation to embrace change and celebrate transformation. This revised second edition incorporates new scholarship on qualitative methods in ethnographic research and their spreading application in seminaries, universities, and divinity schools. As Moschella writes in her reflection on the book fourteen years after the publication of the first edition: "The teaching and practice of qualitative research methods help shape new generations of religious professionals in respectful modes of disciplined inquiry, enabling practitioners to learn about and from the communities they serve." The revised edition includes two appendices by Steve Taylor and Ryan Juskus, respectively, that travel the trail of research blazed by the first edition of this book.

Pastoral Theology and Care by Nancy J. Ramsay Pdf

Leading pastoral theologians explore a wide variety of themes related to pastoral practice. Pastoral Theology and Care: Critical Trajectories in Theory and Practice offers a collection of essays by leading pastoral theologians that represent emerging trajectories in the fields of pastoral theology and care. The topics explored include: qualitative research and ethnography, advances in neuroscience, care across pluralities and intersections in religion and spiritualties, the influence of neoliberal economics in socio-economic vulnerabilities, postcolonial theory and its implications, the intersections of race and religion in caring for black women, and the usefulness of intersectionality for pastoral practice. Each of the essays offers a richly illustrated review of a practice of pastoral care relationally and in the public domain. The contributions to this volume engage seven critical directions emerging in the literature of pastoral theology in the United States and internationally among pastoral and practical theologians. While coverage of these topics does not exhaust important points of activity in the field, it does represent especially promising resources for theory and practice. This important work: Offers unique coverage of new directions in the field Includes contributions from an exceptional group of experts who are noted leaders in their areas of study Introduces the newest perspectives on pastoral care and offers constructive proposals Filled with case illustrations that make chapters pedagogically useful, Pastoral Theology and Care is essential reading for faculty, seminarians and students in advanced degree programs, and pastors.
