An Early History of the Research Branch, British Columbia Ministry of Forests and Range by Ralph Schmidt,John Parminter,Forest History Association of British Columbia,British Columbia. Ministry of Forests and Range. Research Branch,British Columbia. Forest Science Program Pdf

Based on archival material and interviews with previous employees, this document traces the history of research within the B.C. Forest Service from 1912 to 1970. The B.C. Forest Branch was created in February 1912, but research activities didn't begin until 1921 when James (Alex) Alexander studied timber utilization, logging slash disposal, natural regeneration, tree growth and yield, and fire protection. In 1923 Assistant Chief Forester Robert St. Clair recommended the establishment of forest experimental stations in the major forest types of the province, resulting in the Aleza Lake Experiment Station near Prince George (in 1924) and the Cowichan Lake Research Station on Vancouver Island (in 1929). The Research Division was formally established in 1927. By 1930 the Research Division of the B.C. Forest Branch was the largest and most active forest research organization in Canada. In the ensuing decades the research program went through many changes and evolved into a province-wide multi-disciplinary organization.

Awful Splendour by Stephen J. Pyne Pdf

Fire is a defining element in Canadian land and life. With few exceptions, Canada's forests and prairies have evolved with fire. Its peoples have exploited fire and sought to protect themselves from its excesses, and since Confederation, the country has devised various institutions to connect fire and society. The choices Canadians have made says a great deal about their national character. Awful Splendour narrates the history of this grand saga. It will interest geographers, historians, and members of the fire community.

Hollywood North by Mike Gasher Pdf

British Columbia’s billion-dollar film industry trails behind only those of California and New York. This book recounts the story of British Columbia’s rapid rise from relative obscurity in the film world to its current status as " Hollywood North." Gasher positions the industry as a model for commercial film production in the twenty-first century -- one strongly shaped by a perception of cinema as a medium, not of culture, but of regional industrial development. He addresses the specific economic and geographic factors that contribute to the province’s success, such as the low Canadian dollar and BC’s proximity to Los Angeles. Hollywood North is an important book that brings into focus the tension between globalization and localization in the film industry.
