U.S. Troops Stationed in South Korea, Anachronistic? by U.s. Army War College Pdf

The stationing of U.S. military personnel in South Korea is viewed by many as a Cold War hold over that serves no contemporary purpose. Reasons given for ending the U.S. military presence in South Korea are that these forces are no longer needed to defend South Korea against North Korea, the cost of maintaining U.S. forces in South Korea is too high, the commitment of U.S. forces in Korea limits U.S. strategic flexibility, and rising South Korean anti-Americanism. This paper examines these concerns as well as the role U.S. forces play in providing security on the Korean Peninsula and stability in the Asian-Pacific Region. It then examines three courses of action the U.S. could adopt while still fulfilling its commitment to the US-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty. The conclusion is that the U.S. should maintain current force levels in South Korea. The continued unambiguous resolve and commitment of the U.S. to the stability of the Asia-Pacific and its allies remains a prudent, cost-effective constant.

The Peninsula Question by Yoichi Funabashi Pdf

In October 2002 the United States confronted North Korea with suspicions that Pyongyang was enriching uranium in violation of the Agreed Framework that the nations had worked out during the Clinton administration. North Korea subsequently evicted international monitors and resumed its nuclear weapons program. The Peninsula Question chronicles the resulting second Korean nuclear crisis. Japanese journalist Yoichi Funabashi, informed by interviews with more than 160 diplomats and decision makers from China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and the United States, provides a behind-the-scenes look at the negotiations to denuclearize the peninsula. Between 2002 and 2006, a series of top level diplomats, including the prime minister of Japan, attempted to engage with North Korea. Funabashi illustrates how the individual efforts of these major powers laid the groundwork for multilateral negotiations, first as the trilateral meeting and then as the Six-Party Talks. The first four rounds of talks (2003–2005) resulted in significant progress. Unfortunately, a lack of implementation after that breakthrough ultimately led to North Korea's missile tests in July and subsequent nuclear tests in October 2006. Th e Peninsula Question provides a window of understanding on the historical, geopolitical, and security concerns at play on the Korean peninsula since 2002. Offering multiple perspectives on the second Korean nuclear crisis, it describes more than just the U.S. and North Korean points of view. It pays special attention to China's dealings with North Korea, providing rare insights to into the decision-making processes of Beijing. This is an important, authoritative resource for understanding the crisis in Korea and diplomacy in Northeast Asia.

Outsourcing Security by Bruce Edwin Stanley Pdf

Faced with a decreasing supply of national troops, dwindling defense budgets, and the ever-rising demand for boots on the ground in global conflicts and humanitarian emergencies, decision makers are left with little choice but to legalize and legitimize the use of private military contractors (PMCs). Outsourcing Security examines the impact that bureaucratic controls and the increasing permissiveness of security environments have had on the U.S. military’s growing use of PMCs during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Bruce E. Stanley examines the relationship between the rise of the private security industry and five potential explanatory variables tied to supply-and-demand theory in six historical cases, including Operation Desert Storm in 1991, the U.S. intervention in Bosnia in 1995, and Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Outsourcing Security is the only work that moves beyond a descriptive account of the rise of PMCs to lay out a precise theory explaining the phenomenon and providing a framework for those considering PMCs in future global interaction.

Love My Country, Loathe My Government by Walter Bruno Korschek Pdf

Walter "Bruno" Korschek is not a famous politician, a noted journalist, or distinguished political scholar. He is an ordinary American who is disturbed by the continuous erosion of freedom in the United States. This erosion has been caused and encouraged by the American political class. Regardless of party affiliation, the political class consists of career politicians whose only goal is to become elected and then stay elected. They do whatever it takes to remain in office, even if it reduces our individual freedoms as spelled out in the United States Constitution. Some examples of their actions include: Violating our right to privacy through the Patriot Act Increasing the burden of taxation Controlling and managing election processes Turning one group of Americans against another for their own political purposes In Love My Country, Loathe My Government, Korschek lays out a straightforward plan that involves fifty steps needed to restore lost freedom in America. He exposes the myths about government-myths that the political class needs in place to stay in power. Time is running out. The need to act is now before more freedoms are lost. This book sets up a citizen-based action plan to implement the fifty steps at the grassroots level. About the Author Walter "Bruno" Korschek earned a BS in mathematics from the University of Delaware in 1975 and a MS in statistics from the University of Delaware in 1976. He had a twenty-two-year career with a major telecommunications corporation and is founder and owner of a successful family business.
