Academia in Transition by Carl V. Patton Pdf

The impact of early retirement plans and career change on the professional and personal lives of professors and on the manpower and fiscal structures of the universities they serve is examined. The book is based on more than 50 accounts of academics who took early retirement options and a comprehensive review of incentive programs for early retirement, along with mid-career change programs. Chapter 1 explains why colleges and universities are interested in mid-career change and early retirement programs, and outlines the various options now available. Career options in industry, government, and academia are analyzed in chapter 2. Chapter 3 offers an analysis of the experiences of 70 of the first 100 or so persons who were induced to retire early, covering such topics as motivation, satisfaction with the decision, and ways that early retirement affected their well-being. Chapter 4 discusses the fiscal considerations involved in early retirement plans. Chapter 5 examines the manpower questions, including such questions as how incentive early-retirement plans will affect the age distribution of university and college faculties and whether early-retirement and mid-career change will modify age and talent distribution. Chapter 6 contains a discussion of the funding requirements and tax implications of increased-benefit retirement programs and an analysis of the legal aspects of age discrimination. The final chapter sketches the policy implications of mid-career change and early retirement, presents summary evaluation of the early-retirement schemes, and outlines a number of considerations for colleges, universities, and faculty members contemplating these options. In the final chapter several policy considerations are discussed, including: developing a mechanism for faculty review and evaluation; providing retirement and financial counseling; dissemination information about the options; and recognizing potential contributions from Emerkiti. Appendices include a guide to administrator interviews and a guide to early retiree interviews. (Author/LC)

Redefining the Process of Retirement by Winfried Schmähl Pdf

Past and future development as well as possibilities for influencing the process of retirement are discussed, in particular effects on the labour market (supply and demand, behaviour of workers and firms, concerning human resource management and occupational pensions), financing of social security and income of workers. Decisions concerning earlier or postponed, full or partial retirement are the main topic stressing the central role of firms' decisions depending e.g. on their view of the productivity of the elderly. Reports on Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Finland) in particular on their approach for partial retirement are included as well as papers discussing possibilities to stop the trend of early exit from the labour force and how to give incentives for a longer working life (e.g. by changes in social security). These topics are discussed in the view of structural changes in demography, economy and society, using - among other - the US and West Germany as examples. The papers point out the necessity to look at retirement as a process (in a life cycle perspective, requiring longitudinal data for empirical research) and in a perspective integrating the different aspects involved.

I ask you now: how often do you reflect on this possibility? The thing is, if you do think of an early retirement you probably know or think also of the things you would do if money wasn’t a problem for you anymore. There are, of course, the somehow to be expected answers such as becoming more involved with your family, spending more time with your friends, visiting all the places you’ve always wanted to visit, joining a noble cause etc. and they are all just wonderful, but I do believe that even here there is so much more unexplored potential that would ultimately reveal itself in its fullness when you once you are no longer financially confined. But it’s not the same for everybody – for some, who are aware of the dreams or the passions they want to pursue, the latter become the very motivator for fighting to achieve their financial liberation, for others this exact financial liberation is the driving force, the means through which they hope to finally be able to be with themselves and learn those things they love doing most in this life. Whatever side you take here, this book is for you. Probably the main thing we are facing when considering retiring at an early age is making sure we have enough resources to provide a decent level of income to support us. So, yes, saving is a major topic in this case, but how much should we save and how should we save? Which are the options available for us? This book address these questions in a very accessible way offering you a quick start guide to taking the steps you need on your way to an early financial retirement.
