In Praise of Retreat by Kirsteen MacLeod Pdf

For readers of Walden, Wild, Pilgrim at Tinker’s Creek, A Book of Silence, A Gift from the Sea and other celebrations of the inner adventure. An utterly engaging dive into our modern ways of retreat — where we go, why we’re drawn, and how it’s urgent From pilgrim paths to forest cabins, and from rented hermitages to arts temples and quiet havens for yoga and meditation, In Praise of Retreat explores the pleasures and powers of this ancient practice for modern people. Kirsteen MacLeod draws on the history of retreat and personal experiences to reveal the many ways readers can step back from society to reconnect with their deepest selves — and to their loftiest aspirations in life. In the 21st century, disengaging, even briefly, is seen by many as self-indulgent, unproductive, and antisocial. Yet to retreat is as basic a human need as being social, and everyone can benefit, whether it’s for a weekend, a month, or a lifetime. Retreat is an uncertain adventure with as many peaks and valleys as any mountain expedition, except we head inward, to recharge and find fresh energy and brave new ideas to bring back into our everyday lives.

Fighting Retreat by Walter Reid Pdf

Winston Churchill was closely connected with India from 1896, when he landed in Bombay with his regiment, the Fourth Hussars, until 1947, when India finally achieved independence. No other British statesman had such a long association with the sub-continent or sought to influence its politics in such a sustained and harmful manner. Churchill consistently sought to sabotage moves towards any degree of independence, and for five years led opposition to the Government of India Act, crippling the legislation before its passage in 1935. In 1939, he congratulated himself that he had created a three-legged stool on which Britain could sit indefinitely. As Prime Minister during the Second World War, Churchill worked behind the scenes to frustrate the freedom struggle, delaying independence by a decade. To this day he is regarded as the archetypical imperialist villain, held personally responsible for the Bengal Famine. This book reveals Churchill at his worst: malign, cruel, obstructive and selfish. But the same man was outstandingly liberal at the Colonial Office, generous to the Boers and the Irish, to the detriment of his career. He later rushed colonies in the Middle East towards independence. So why was he so strangely hostile towards India?

The Covenant Retreat by Steven McGlaun Pdf

The Covenant Retreat affirms that each of us is called into a covenant with God. Through this retreat experience, high school seniors begin to identify their unique relationship with God, as an individual and as part of the larger Church. The leader's guide includes material to help teachers and leaders bring the experience into the classroom for weeks before and after the retreat. Leaders will find detailed directions for implementing the retreat; lesson plans, prayers, and handouts; material to help use the student component, Answering God's Call to Covenant, after the retreat; and suggested models for liturgical celebrations to bring the retreat to a close. It also includes suggestions on how to celebrate the retreat with the entire school through graduation and other activities. Answering God's Call to Covenant helps older adolescents consider where they want to go in life before they encounter the crossroads of young adulthood. Students address seven key questions and write their own covenant statements, which will help guide them through life's many challenges. The student text also helps seniors reflect, pray, and discern on their own after graduation.

The Life of Evelyn Underhill by Margaret Cropper Pdf

"Margaret Cropper was the first to capture [Evelyn Underhill's] life, which now in this new century can continue to inspire, challenge and point the way for those on the ancient quest for the holy." --from the Foreword by Dana Greene, dean of Oxford College of Emory University SkyLight Lives reintroduces the lives and works of key spiritual figures of our time--people who by their teaching or example have challenged our assumptions about spirituality and have caused us to look at it in new ways. Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) was one of the most highly acclaimed spiritual thinkers of her day. Her fresh approach to mysticism provided one of the first invitations to modern seekers to realize that not only saints or great holy men could experience the love of God--but that all people contain within them a capacity for the Divine. This intimate biography, written by one of Underhill's closest friends, allows us to appreciate this revolutionary woman as both a charming, down-to-earth friend and a groundbreaking spiritual seeker and guide. Through letters, personal reminiscences, and excerpts from Underhill's much-loved published writings--including her definitive Mysticism, published in 1911 and continuously in print since then--Margaret Cropper captures the spirit, journey and wisdom of one of the most influential women of the early twentieth century. Updated with a new foreword by Dana Greene, dean of Oxford College of Emory University, this intriguing spiritual portrait includes a brief memoir of Lucy Menzies, one of Underhill's closest confidants, highlighting their remarkable relationship. This biography of Evelyn Underhill, one of the greatest spiritual thinkers of the early twentieth century, guides readers on a voyage through her life and a survey of her spiritual classics that would forever bring the Divine into the everyday for countless people. A passionate writer and teacher who wrote elegantly on mysticism, worship and devotional life, Evelyn Underhill urged the integration of personal spirituality and worldly action. This is the moving story of how she made her way toward spiritual maturity, from her early days of agnosticism to the years when her influence was felt throughout the world. An early believer that contemplative prayer is not just for monks and nuns but for anyone willing to undertake it, Underhill considered the study of modern science not as a threat to contemplation but rather an enhancement of it. Her many lectures and writings on mysticism and spirituality, including her classic Mysticism: A Study in the Nature and Development of Man's Spiritual Consciousness, inspired the many people touched by her unique passion to take on a spiritual life.

Retreat Addresses to Women (Classic Reprint) by Jonas Pascal Fitzwilliam Davidson Pdf

Excerpt from Retreat Addresses to Women The present volume contains a selection from the many Retreats given to Religious Communities, and their Associ ates by Mr. Davidson. It has been compiled from his own notes, which were for the most part full and distinct. The last Retreat (at Ditchingham, 1898) is the only exception to this. It was supplied from the shorthand notes of two of the Retreatants, and is believed to be very accurate. It may be noticed that the subjects of two sets of these addresses The Vine and the Branches, and the Prayer in St. John xvii. Are similar to two in the Companion Volume of' Addresses to Clergy. But it need hardly be said that the treatment in each case is quite different, and suited to the needs of those especially addressed. The Editor wishes to express her great obligation to the Rev. Herbert F. Hunt, Vicar of Cookham Dean, Berks, who has revised and corrected the proof-sheets both of this and of the Notes of Addresses to the Clergy. Without his assistance the publication of these volumes would have been well-nigh impossible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Heightened interest in multicultural issues in psychology and an understanding of culture as a critical aspect of human behavior has moved the topic of multiculturalism into the forefront of research and to required coursework in the helping professions. However, this is not without the backlash of resistance. Resistance to Multiculturalism: Issues and Interventions examines the subtle forms of racism and resistance to the multicultural movement in psychology and society. The authors use their vast experience in the arena of multiculturalism, both from the perspective of teaching and administration, to detail accounts, experiences, and challenges of resistance. Therapy and research is interwoven throughout this text that begins by placing multiculturalism at the heart of the best traditions of scholarship as proposed by the highly regarded Ernest Boyer of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In a conversational style and through chapters addressing what includes modern resistance, the classroom, stereotypes, resistance at the administrative level, and groups, this book offers techniques and interventions to overcoming resistance. Readers who teach multiculturalism, students, researchers, and those advocating for multiculturalism on on the broader community level will find Resistance to Multiculturalism an informative guide to combating the challenges of resistance.
