Road To Scientific Success, The: Inspiring Life Stories Of Prominent Researchers (Volume 3) by Deborah D L Chung Pdf

The book is unique in its emphasis on the road to scientific success rather than the science itself. Scientists communicate much on their science through research publications, but they tend to talk much less, if at all, on the challenges encountered on the road to success. Information on the road to scientific success is helpful to people that are considering embarking on the journey on this road or are in the middle of the journey on this road. These people need inspiration and encouragement. Unless the information is recorded, it would be lost. The objectives of this book series are to:

It covers all aspects of plant cell biology without emphasizing any one plant, organelle, molecule, or technique. Although most examples are biased towards plants, basic similarities between all living eukaryotic cells (animal and plant) are recognized and used to best illustrate cell processes. This is a must-have reference for scientists with a background in plant anatomy, plant physiology, plant growth and development, plant taxonomy, and more. Includes chapter on using mutants and genetic approaches to plant cell biology research and a chapter on -omic technologies Explains the physiological underpinnings of biological processes to bring original insights relating to plants Includes examples throughout from physics, chemistry, geology, and biology to bring understanding on plant cell development, growth, chemistry and diseases Provides the essential tools for students to be able to evaluate and assess the mechanisms involved in cell growth, chromosome motion, membrane trafficking and energy exchange

The impact of spending cuts on science and scientific research by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Science and Technology Committee Pdf

The pressure to be seen to be making cuts across the public sector is threatening to undermine both the Government's good record on investment in science and the economic recovery. Whilst the contribution of a strong domestic science base is widely acknowledged, methodological problems with quantifying its precise value to the economy mean that it is in danger of losing out in Whitehall negotiations. Scientists are under increasing pressure to demonstrate the impact of their work and there is concern that areas without immediate technology applications are being undervalued. The Committee believes the Government faced a strategic choice: invest in areas with the greatest potential to influence and improve other areas of spending, or make cuts of little significance now, but that will have a devastating effect upon British science and the economy in the years to come.

Creating Literacy Communities as Pathways to Student Success by Jessica Singer Early,Christina Saidy Pdf

Creating Literacy Communities as Pathways to Student Success offers a model for using literacy as a pathway for secondary students to explore fields from which they are often systematically excluded. In particular, this volume demonstrates how access for young Latina students to STEM related fields can be bolstered through engagement with mentors in writing and reading programs. Written for pre- and in-service teachers, as well as scholars across disciplines, this book aims to re-conceptualize the ways in which writing can best serve ethnically and linguistically diverse students, especially girls.

Life in Science by Diego Breviario,Jack A. Tuszynski Pdf

This book is a collection of stories, reflections and advice written by proficient scientists. They address the question of what doing science means to them, and describe attitudes and working practices that have proved effective and rewarding. The book is aimed in particular at young people who are attracted by science or already undertaking undergraduate studies, and who are considering making science their long-term profession. It will also be helpful and revealing to early-career scientists who are searching for their own best route to success. The book serves as a platform for experienced scientists to describe their original inclination, how that subjective disposition found its expression in their way of doing science, whether their expectations were met, and what achievements they can claim. But it is not restricted to success: contributors also share details of the limitations and failures they have encountered. Last but not least they describe how they see science now, how they think it will be in the near future, and what advice they would give to the their much younger colleagues. Readers will appreciate the diversity of the individual paths shaped by different education, motivation, ambition, inclination, intuition, feeling, belief and eligibility. At the same time the stories confirm that science relies on a translation of this subjective level into an objective level, one that is shared and accepted by the international scientific community, and whose results are produced with a commonly accepted and fully rational scientific method of investigation.
