Robert Browning by John Trivett Nettleship Pdf

Excerpt from Robert Browning: Essays and Thoughts In an age when knowledge, for its own sake, is by a large class of men as eagerly sought as gold, some apology seems necessary for a composition which professedly avoids facts, and deals in speculation. More especially would this apology seem to be due from anyone attempting to handle the works of a master, the beneficence of whose genius has led him to range in fields of knowledge so wide, and for their own sake to store harvests of learning so plenteous. Any such apology as may be due on this ground I am willing to make; but I should fail in my duty of respect were I to stop there, and refrain from expressing, though in feeble words, the extent of my debt in another way. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1868 edition. Excerpt: ... 299 EPILOGUE. In bringing to a close the various thoughts evoked by a few grand utterances, some concluding words will not be out of place. If at a first backward glance over the whole series of essays, it should appear to the reader that the speculative or religious views in each are inconsistent one with another, it should be remembered that each poem has been treated as a separate effort, as forming by itself, in a quasidramatic guise, a distinct train of thought. The train of thought, which was the basis of each poem, must necessarily be treated, in the development of it which has been attempted, as consistent only with itself; and the first duty of the essayist was to preserve, as far as possible, in all his ramifications, the same principle of intellectual research as supported the actual poem in hand. And yet, as will appear more plainly in the following words, there runs through the seeming inconsistency of each theme a thread of unity which supports the whole. Let us shortly review, and bind together into one, the subjects to which our attention has been directed. We have been taught, then, how to aspire in our love passion; we have learned the consequences of thwarting intellect, and the sin of checking human love or charity; we have learned too the terrible retributions which overtake little evil doings, and the necessity of using failure as a positive force. We have seen the duty of man to man in checking or avenging evil-doing; we have seen how sexual love, human love, failure and duty, were all united in the grand ideal of Sordello; we have found in the striving of David the manifestation of an attribute, the spirit of prayer, without which neither passion, nor intellect, nor love, are of any avail. Is there not a strong...
