Roman Twilight by Elizabeth May Pdf

"It is five years since Quintus fought his last battle. It has been a quiet time, spent breeding horses. An old friend’s death gives him an urge to travel and see what’s left of the Roman Empire; whose army he served so faithfully. His itchy feet take him through Western Europe during the fifth century. A year on the road will see him go from honoured old soldier to slave and then back to respected general. In his adventures he meets the characters who shaped those years, St. Patrick, Niall of the Nine Hostages, King Arthur’s father and the ancestors of the founders of France. Europe is in upheaval. Goths, Franks and Huns are all pushing west while the Irish push east. Meanwhile what's left of the Roman Empire is in rebellion. Can the old general save them from themselves?"--www.amazon.com.

Shakespeare's Roman Trilogy by Paul A. Cantor Pdf

Paul A. Cantor first probed Shakespeare’s Roman plays—Coriolanus, Julius Caeser, and Antony and Cleopatra—in his landmark Shakespeare’s Rome (1976). With Shakespeare’s Roman Trilogy, he now argues that these plays form an integrated trilogy that portrays the tragedy not simply of their protagonists but of an entire political community. Cantor analyzes the way Shakespeare chronicles the rise and fall of the Roman Republic and the emergence of the Roman Empire. The transformation of the ancient city into a cosmopolitan empire marks the end of the era of civic virtue in antiquity, but it also opens up new spiritual possibilities that Shakespeare correlates with the rise of Christianity and thus the first stirrings of the medieval and the modern worlds. More broadly, Cantor places Shakespeare’s plays in a long tradition of philosophical speculation about Rome, with special emphasis on Machiavelli and Nietzsche, two thinkers who provide important clues on how to read Shakespeare’s works. In a pathbreaking chapter, he undertakes the first systematic comparison of Shakespeare and Nietzsche on Rome, exploring their central point of contention: Did Christianity corrupt the Roman Empire or was the corruption of the Empire the precondition of the rise of Christianity? Bringing Shakespeare into dialogue with other major thinkers about Rome, Shakespeare’s Roman Trilogy reveals the true profundity of the Roman Plays.

A Chronicle of the Roman Twilight by John Ranger Pdf

The story begins in A.D. 364 when the author of this memoir, Marcus Cedranus, is born into a middle class landowners family in western Britain. While his material prospects are promising, his deteriorating relationship with his parents causes him to leave home for the continent. In Gaul he becomes a teamster for a freight hauling company, meets an older woman who will eventually play a major role in his life and is drafted into the Roman army in 382. He is assigned to Legion XXII in Mainz and in 383 is temporarily transferred to Belgrade on the Danube. A revolt in the west makes this transfer permanent. He participates in several military campaigns and takes part in a triumph in Constantinople in 386. In 388 his regiment takes part in the eastern offensive against the revolt in the west that has by now spread to Italy. With the revolt suppressed, he is assigned to a new imperial guard regiment for the restored western emperor, Valentinian II. During another transfer to the east Marcus suffers a terrible personal tragedy from which it is impossible to recover. Another civil war breaks out in the west and is suppressed with terrible casualties. Marcus is appointed tribune and made a member of the personal staff of Stilicho, the new generalissimo of the west. Further military adventures take place in Greece, Britain and Italy. A massive barbarian invasion of the west on December 31, 406 triggers political instability leading to revolts in both Britain and Italy. This inevitably leads to the sack of Rome by Alaric and his Visigoths in 410.

Twilight of Empire by Martijn Nicasie Pdf

Nicasie, Martijn Twilight of Empire. The Roman Army from the Reign of Diocletian until the Battle of Adrianople. 1998 This book discusses the development of the Roman army during the fourth century. The author argues that the Roman army of the fourth century was by no means inferior to its early Imperial counterpart, and in some ways even much superior. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, the book discusses the development of the Roman army in the period immediately preceding the reign of Diocletian, the massive reorganization of the army in the fourth century under Diocletian and Constantine, recruitment and barbariza tion, and the Grand Strategy of the Empire in the fourth century. The final chapter is devoted to an analysis of battlefield tactics and of two important fourth-century battles, the Battle of Strasbourg in 357 and the Battle of Adrianople in 378. Twilight of the Empire by Simon MacDowall Pdf

Although Rome's traditional legions of heavy infantry decreased in numbers between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD, the pedes remained the backbone of the Roman army until well into the 5th century. The pede was unlike the legionary who preceded him, and perhaps he was not as well disciplined, but in many ways he was more flexible - ready for deployment to trouble spots, and for fighting both as a skirmisher and a heavy infantryman. Simon MacDowall explores the changing nature of the Roman infantryman between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD, covering such topics as recruitment, training and armour, and providing an excellent evaluation of Roman infantry tactics.

Twilight of the Godlings by Francis Young Pdf

Throughout the recorded history of Britain, belief in earthbound spirits presiding over nature, the home and human destiny has been a feature of successive cultures. From the localised deities of Britannia to the Anglo-Saxons' elves and the fairies of late medieval England, Britain's godlings have populated a shadowy, secretive realm of ritual and belief running parallel to authorised religion. Twilight of the Godlings delves deep into the elusive history of these supernatural beings, tracing their evolution from the pre-Roman Iron Age to the end of the Middle Ages. Arguing that accreted cultural assumptions must be cast aside in order to understand the godlings – including the cherished idea that these folkloric creatures are the decayed remnants of pagan gods and goddesses – this bold, revisionist book traces Britain's 'small gods' to a popular religiosity influenced by classical learning. It offers an exciting new way of grasping the island's most mysterious mythical inhabitants.

Wolves of Rome by Krešimir Vuković Pdf

The Roman foundation myth has been the subject of classical scholarship for centuries. But much in the story of Romulus and Remus remains unexplained. This is the first English language book-length study of the Lupercalia, a religious festival central to understanding both the Roman foundation myth and the history of Rome. The festival of the Lupercalia was a male initiation ritual and shares a number of traits with similar rituals across the world. The agonistic elements in the story of Romulus and Remus and the Lupercalia can be compared to a number of Vedic rituals and traced back to a common Indo-European prehistory. The Lupercalia celebration remained a central annual event throughout the history of Rome and reflected political and social life in the city. Caesar used it to stage a refusal of kingship and Augustus restored its initiatory aspect, which continued in the period of the Empire. It survived all attempts of Christian prohibition to appear in the form of a carnival that criticized the pope in the late 5th century. In sum, the book offers a new interpretation of the Roman foundation myth and the Lupercalia. It follows the transformation of a unique ritual from its Indo-European roots through Roman history to late antiquity.
