The African Heritage of Latinx and Caribbean Literature by Sarah Quesada Pdf

The African Heritage of Latinx and Caribbean Literature unearths a buried African archive within widely-read Latinx writers of the last fifty years. It challenges dominant narratives in World Literature and transatlantic studies that ignore Africa's impact in broader Latin American culture. Sarah Quesada argues that these canonical works evoke textual memorials of African memory. She shows how the African Atlantic haunts modern Latinx and Caribbean writing, and examines the disavowal or distortion of the African subject in the constructions of national, racial, sexual, and spiritual Latinx identity. Quesada shows how themes such as the 19th century 'scramble for Africa,' the decolonizing wars, Black internationalism, and the neoliberal turn are embedded in key narratives. Drawing from multilingual archives about West and Central Africa, she examines how the legacies of colonial French, Iberian, British and U.S. Imperialisms have impacted on the relationships between African and Latinx identities. This is the first book-length project to address the African colonial and imperial inheritance of Latinx literature.

Roosevelt in Africa by Frederick Seymour Pdf

Excerpt from Roosevelt in Africa: Graphic Account of the World's Most Renowned Hunter in the Wilds of Africa, His Unerring Aim and Wonderful Ability as a Hunter, Encounters With Lions, Tigers, Elephants and Other Wild Beasts of the Jungle; Containing Also a Complete History and Study of W The Roosevelt hunting expedition, which gives the special title to this work, is herewith described because its chief figure is not only an ex-President of the United States, but an American authority on wild animals who, in his ambition to become a world authority, thus ventured into some of the most famous hunting grounds of Africa. Another reason why unusual prominence is given to it, is that it is one of the most noteworthy expeditions ever organized to hunt big game and make scientific investigations among the animals of perhaps the most important zoological division of the earth. From my earliest boyhood, wild animal life has had a fascination for me. I have been nearly over the globe and in most of the countries where wild animals have been least disturbed by civilization. I have carefully studied each wild animal with a view to becoming acquainted not only with its physical appearance, but with its habits and manner of living, with all the traits of its character and every detail of its private life. In describing the animals I have tried to avoid the use of all scientific words and terms so as not to confuse those readers who have made no special study of zoology. My experiences have taught me the truth of the Scriptural saying that "man and the animals are kin," and I hope and believe that I am doing a benefit to my fellow man, as well as giving him genuine enjoyment and pleasure, by bringing him into a closer acquaintance with God's animal kingdom. African Game Trails by Theodore Roosevelt Pdf

In 1909, the Smithsonian Institution commissioned ex-President Theodore Roosevelt to collect specimens of African wildlife for the National Museum. Roosevelt went to Africa with his son Kermit, several prominent naturalists, and many journalists, thereby initiating the safari industry and setting the standard for the big game hunt. Yet Roosevelt never killed for thrills, instead hunting only specific animals in the amounts requested by the Smithsonian. Making his way from the Kenyan coast to the Upper Nile, he records his impressions of the African landscape, witnesses a traditional lion hunt by African pastoralists, and recalls his meetings with East Africans, to whom he was known as 'Bwana Tumbo (belly).'
