Royal Graciousness: Be the Empress by Tong Tong Pdf

He was a cold and emotionless king, ruthless and cruel. He tortured her to the point where she couldn't live or die.She was originally a naive, talented girl. She hated him for forcing her, but she could not do anything about it.The warmth of the hibiscus, the love and love of the night, the imprisoning of her, she was unable to escape ...What he wanted to invade was the whole of his body and mind; what he gave was Plato's love; she had nothing to rely on but to float in desire. The phoenix body was set in the sky, with one order being the last. She hated him for taking the torture and imprisoning her every night."Without saying a word, he simply threw her into the dragon bed and kept her by his side. He hated her for not understanding his intentions and for taking every day ..."

Mozart's Youth by George Upton Pdf

The life-story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart contained in this volume closes with his admission to membership in the Accademia Filarmonica at Bologna, Italy. Mozart was then in his fifteenth year. Up to that time his life had been a happy one, free from care, untouched by adversity, and crowned with continuous successes. He was admired by the people, considered a prodigy by the greatest composers, and was received with extraordinary honors at the Courts of Austria, France, Holland, and England. His twenty remaining years, embittered by enmities and saddened by privations and misfortunes, find no place in this life-story.

The Two Marshals: Bazaine & Pétain by Philip Guedalla Pdf

A brilliant study of France and French military power through four generations. The careers of the two Marshalls span the years from Napoleon’s downfall to Verdun and Vichy France. “This biography of two soldiers of France is, in effect, a history of the French Army for a hundred years, as well as portraiture of marked differences and striking contrasts. There are strong touches of irony and emphasis in Bazaine’s life and army career, his strength, and innocence in face of public blame following the surrender at Metz in 1870 — and Pétain’s, whose weakness and mediocrity contrast baldly with his predecessor. “The first Marshal was made a scapegoat by his defeated country, and when the second Marshal came to power, the scapegoat was France”. The elaborate sketching of background material, the bird’s eye views of each successive era in French history provide a three-dimensional setting for each man. Bazaine’s is a more thorough characterization, for Petain’s seems more often guesswork and speculation through lack of early factual material. However there is justice and judgement in this study of “the psychology of defeat” and Guedalla’s lively style and personal approach to his subjects is good reading.”-Kirkus Reviews

Empress Dowager Cixi by Jung Chang Pdf

From the beloved, internationally bestselling author of Wild Swans, and co-author of the bestselling Mao: The Unknown Story, the dramatic, epic biography of the unusual woman who ruled China for 50 years, from concubine to Empress, overturning centuries of traditions and formalities to bring China into the modern world. A woman, an Empress of immense wealth who was largely a prisoner within the compound walls of her palaces, a mother, a ruthless enemy, and a brilliant strategist: Chang makes a compelling case that Cixi was one of the most formidable and enlightened rulers of any nation. Cixi led an intense and singular life. Chosen at the age of 12 to be a concubine by the Emperor Xianfeng, she gave birth to his only male heir who at four was designated Emperor when his father died in 1861. In a brilliant move, the young woman enlisted the help of the Emperor's widow and the two women orchestrated a coup that ousted the regents and made Cixi sole Regent. Untrained and untaught, the two studied history and politics together, ruling the huge nation from behind a curtain. When her boy died, Cixi designated a young nephew as Emperor, continuing her reign till her death in 1908. Chang gives us a complex, riveting portrait of Cixi through a reign as long as that of her fellow Empress, Victoria, whom she longed to meet: her ruthlessness in fighting off rivals; her curiosity to learn; her reliance on Westerners who she placed in key positions; and her sensitivity and desire to preserve the distinctiveness of China's past while overturning traditions (she, as Chang reveals--not Mao, as he claimed--banned footbinding) and exposing its culture to western ideas and technology.
