Rubber Technology by M. Morton Pdf

About ten years after the publication of the Second Edition (1973), it became apparent that it was time for an up-date of this book. This was especially true in this case, since the subject matter has traditionally dealt mainly with the structure, properties, and technology of the various elastomers used in industry, and these are bound to undergo significant changes over the period of a decade. In revising the contents of this volume, it was thought best to keep the orig inal format. Hence the first five chapters discuss the same general subject matter as before. The chapters dealing with natural rubber and the synthetic elastomers are up-dated, and an entirely new chapter has been added on the thermoplastic elastomers, which have, of course, grown tremendously in importance. Another innovation is the addition of a new chapter, "Miscellaneous Elastomers," to take care of "old" elastomers, e.g., polysulfides, which have decreased some what in importance, as well as to introduce some of the newly-developed syn thetic rubbers which have not yet reached high production levels. The editor wishes to express his sincere appreciation to all the contributors, without whose close cooperation this task would have been impossible. He would especially like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of Dr. Howard Stephens in the planning of this book, and for his suggestion of suitable authors.

Reverse Engineering of Rubber Products by Saikat Das Gupta,Rabindra Mukhopadhyay,Krishna C. Baranwal,Anil K. Bhowmick Pdf

Reverse engineering is widely practiced in the rubber industry. Companies routinely analyze competitors’ products to gather information about specifications or compositions. In a competitive market, introducing new products with better features and at a faster pace is critical for any manufacturer. Reverse Engineering of Rubber Products: Concepts, Tools, and Techniques explains the principles and science behind rubber formulation development by reverse engineering methods. The book describes the tools and analytical techniques used to discover which materials and processes were used to produce a particular vulcanized rubber compound from a combination of raw rubber, chemicals, and pigments. A Compendium of Chemical, Analytical, and Physical Test Methods Organized into five chapters, the book first reviews the construction of compounding ingredients and formulations, from elastomers, fillers, and protective agents to vulcanizing chemicals and processing aids. It then discusses chemical and analytical methods, including infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, chromatography, and microscopy. It also examines physical test methods for visco-elastic behavior, heat aging, hardness, and other features. A chapter presents important reverse engineering concepts. In addition, the book includes a wide variety of case studies of formula reconstruction, covering large products such as tires and belts as well as smaller products like seals and hoses. Get Practical Insights on Reverse Engineering from the Book’s Case Studies Combining scientific principles and practical advice, this book brings together helpful insights on reverse engineering in the rubber industry. It is an invaluable reference for scientists, engineers, and researchers who want to produce comparative benchmark information, discover formulations used throughout the industry, improve product performance, and shorten the product development cycle.

The 3rd edition of The Science and Technology of Rubber provides a broad survey of elastomers with special emphasis on materials with a rubber-like elasticity. As in the 2nd edition, the emphasis remains on a unified treatment of the material; exploring topics from the chemical aspects such as elastomer synthesis and curing, through recent theoretical developments and characterization of equilibrium and dynamic properties, to the final applications of rubber, including tire engineering and manufacturing. Many advances have been made in polymer and elastomers research over the past ten years since the 2nd edition was published. Updated material stresses the continuous relationship between the ongoing research in synthesis, physics, structure and mechanics of rubber technology and industrial applications. Special attention is paid to recent advances in rubber-like elasticity theory and new processing techniques for elastomers. This new edition is comprised of 20% new material, including a new chapter on environmental issues and tire recycling. · Explores new applications of rubber within the tire industry, from new filler materials to “green tires (a tire that has yet to undergo curing and vulcanization). · 30% of the material has been revised from the previous edition with the addition of 20% new material, including a chapter on the environment. · A mixture of theory, experiments, and practical procedures will offer value to students, practitioners, and research & development departments in industry.

Rubber Processing and Production Organization by P.K. Freakley Pdf

The absence of a book dealing with rubber processing has been apparent for some time and it is surprising that a straightforward text has not been produced. However, this book goes far beyond the scope of a simple technical approach and deals with the full spectrum of activities which lead to successful and profitable product manufacture. The need to deliver a product to a customer at the right time, at the right cost, and at the right quality is a basic premise on which the book is based. The increasingly stringent demands of customers for products that can be introduced directly into an assembly or production line without goods inwards inspection, are placing increasing pressures on the manufacturer. As a result, it is becoming essential to achieve and sustain product quality and consistency, by the monitoring and control of manufacture, at a level which renders all products saleable. The book has been written to satisfy the needs of practitioners in the rubber industry and is certainly not another descriptive text which is only read for interest when more important matters are not pressing. My close cooperation with Philip K. Freakley during the writing of the book has resulted in the incorporation of many of the viewpoints and methods which I have developed and refined during more than 38 years in the rubber industry.

Rubber Manufacturing in Malaysia by C.C. Goldthorpe Pdf

Malaysia's rubber manufacturing sector is a prime example of an industry based on a locally produced agricultural resource. In Rubber Manufacturing in Malaysia, C.C. Goldthorpe draws on industrial policy theory along with many years of practical experience to examine the growth of rubber manufacturing in Malaysia. Over the past century, a series of technological discoveries resulted in the worldwide rise of a rubber production industry that manufactures tyres for motor vehicles, engineering components, household gloves and medical products. Goldthorpe argues that the production of rubber goods has played a significant part in the transformation of the country from primary commodity producer to newly industrialized economy, a position he supports by tracing the historical development of rubber-based industrial production and the effects of government policies promoting industrialization. Taken as a whole, the rubber industry is vertically integrated, with locally produced natural and synthetic rubbers used by the rubber manufacturing sector to produce latex products and general rubber goods for export markets.

Rubber Technology and Manufacture by C. Hepburn Pdf

Natural and synthetic rubbers play an important role in many aspects of modern life, and have been essential to developments in the automotive, aerospace, building and communication industries amongst many others. There is therefore an enormous range of knowledge that the engineering, designer or technologist working in these fields must have access to, from raw material properties to the behaviour of reinforced and composite materials. This book provides this information. The text opens with an historical account, followed by an outline of the whole of rubber technology which serves as a guide to the subsequent chapters. Initial chapters cover the physics of rubbers, the source and properties of raw materials, the vulcanisation process, and the reinforcement phenomena. They provide the background for the practical description of manufacturing processes and compounding principles to which the subsequent chapters are devoted. Testing methods and standards are then concisely summarised, and reviews of professional, trade and research organisations are included. Finally, there are abundant references to the literature and patent specifications and a full bibliography. Professor Hepburn acts as Editor once again for the third edition of this well-established book. The text has been substantially revised and updated with the inclusion of new data and illustrations in respect not only of the commercial information regarding materials and equipment but also of the important scientific and technological developments that have taken place since the last edition.
