Rubens Unveiled by Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten (Belgium),Nico van Hout,Arnout Balis Pdf

The genius and virtuosity of Rubens' painterly skill is apparent. But how exactly did he work? How did he actually create his paintings? This beautiful book takes the reader through the entire passage from sketch to sale. It looks over the master's shoulder and discovers how he first made pentimenti, oil sketches and model studies before applying his paint to what were at times enormous panels - sometimes in many successive transparent layers, at other times directly with colourful brushstrokes. Rubens was a craftsman, and was familiar with the work of his contemporaries and the latest techniques, on which he himself made variations or adaptations. He employed assistants to carry out parts of a work, negotiated prices, and took a keen interest in the transportation of his work. The words of Rubens himself or his contemporaries feature regularly in this publication so that the genesis of a work can be followed at first hand.

Rubens and the Dominican Church in Antwerp by Adam Sammut Pdf

This book is about the Dominican church in Antwerp (today St Paul’s). It is structured around three works of art, made or procured by Peter Paul Rubens: the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary cycle (in situ), Caravaggio’s Rosary Madonna (Vienna) and the Wrath of Christ high altarpiece (Lyon). Within the artist’s lifetime, the church and monastery were completely rebuilt, creating one of the most spectacular sacred spaces in Northern Europe. In this richly illustrated book, Adam Sammut reconceptualises early modern churches as theatres of political economy, advancing an original approach to cultural production in a time of war. Using methodologies at the cutting edge of the humanities, the place of St Paul’s is restored to the crux of Antwerp’s commercial, civic and religious life.

Rubens Unveiled by Valerie Herremans Pdf

"This is the second volume in the series "Rubens Unveiled", in which the Rubens Research Project of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp shares the fruits of its research with a wider public. It follows a first book on Rubens's painting technique. This second publication explores the physical, spiritual and cultural context of several major Rubens paintings in the Antwerp Museum's collection, drawn from four once-prominent houses of worship in the city. The Norbertine Abbey of St Michael, the Franciscan Church, and the churches of the Calced and the Discalced Carmelites were all suppressed during the French occupation that began in 1794. The book describes the history of these religious institutions and reveals how they looked, inside and out."--Page 4 de couverture.

Master of Shadows by Mark Lamster Pdf

Although his popularity is eclipsed by Rembrandt today, Peter Paul Rubens was revered by his contemporaries as the greatest painter of his era, if not of all history. His undeniable artistic genius, bolstered by a modest disposition and a reputation as a man of tact and discretion, made him a favorite among monarchs and political leaders across Europe—and gave him the perfect cover for the clandestine activities that shaped the landscape of seventeenth-century politics. In Master of Shadows, Mark Lamster brilliantly recreates the culture, religious conflicts, and political intrigues of Rubens’s time, following the painter from Antwerp to London, Madrid, Paris, and Rome and providing an insightful exploration of Rubens’s art as well as the private passions that influenced it.

Traces of Vermeer by Jane Jelley Pdf

Johannes Vermeer's luminous paintings are loved and admired around the world, yet we do not understand how they were made. We see sunlit spaces; the glimmer of satin, silver, and linen; we see the softness of a hand on a lute string or letter. We recognize the distilled impression of a moment of time; and we feel it to be real. We might hope for some answers from the experts, but they are confounded too. Even with the modern technology available, they do not know why there is no evidence of any preliminary drawing; why there are shifts in focus; and why his pictures are unusually blurred. Some wonder if he might possibly have used a camera obscura to capture what he saw before him. The few traces Vermeer has left behind tell us little: there are no letters or diaries; and no reports of him at work. Jane Jelley has taken a new path in this detective story. A painter herself, she has worked with the materials of his time: the cochineal insect and lapis lazuli; the sheep bones, soot, earth, and rust. She shows us how painters made their pictures layer by layer; she investigates old secrets; and hears travelers' tales. She explores how Vermeer could have used a lens in the creation of his masterpieces. The clues were there all along. After all this time, now we can unlock the studio door, and catch a glimpse of Vermeer inside, painting light.

Advances in Invertebrate (Neuro)Endocrinology (2-volume set) by Saber Saleuddin,Angela B. Lange,Ian Orchard Pdf

Advances in Invertebrate (Neuro)Endocrinology: A Collection of Reviews in the Post-Genomic Era (2-volume set) provides an informative series of reviews from expert scientists who are at the forefront of their research into the endocrinology of invertebrates. These two volumes are timely and appropriate in this post-genomic era because of the rapid pace of change brought about by genome projects, functional genomics, and genetics (omics technologies). The volume shows the rich history and strong tradition of cutting-edge research using invertebrates that has opened up our broader understanding of comparative endocrinology and the evolution of regulatory pathways and systems. These reviews set the scene and context for this exciting new era of understanding that has come from this post-genomic revolution. This book undertakes the daunting task of covering most of the diverse endocrine systems that exist among invertebrates. The papers in this book will advance our knowledge of invertebrate endocrinology but also of endocrinology in general, making the book will be valuable to researchers and students.

On Depiction: Selected Writings on Art by Avigdor Arikha Pdf

A marvellous book which teaches us how to see. There is not a word out of place. And the author’s seriousness allows us to feel his full passion, what really matters for him… This book will provide me lasting company, and I will often look in its pages for backing for my own judgements. —Jean Starobinski When a great painter also happens to be an intelligent and cultivated one, his observations on art count a hundred times more than a critic’s or a historian’s do. A man’s knowledge of his own craft is both irreplaceable and indispensable. —Simon Leys Throughout his whole development I have never ceased to admire the acuteness of his vision and his faultless insight into the art of the past. —Samuel Beckett Avigdor Arikha was one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. He was born in Romania to German-speaking Romanian Jewish parents and spent most of his life in Paris. A talented child, he started drawing early on. During the Second World War, he was deported to a concentration camp in the Ukraine, where he drew the horrors he witnessed. These drawings saved his life. During the 1950s, he established himself in Paris and was enjoying a successful career as an abstract painter. In 1965, a Caravaggio exhibition prompted him to convert to drawing from life. He stopped using colour until 1973, when he started again to paint. He worked with a religious, almost war-like, intensity until his death. Arikha was also an erudite and passionate scholar, endowed with a deep understanding of the history of art and its techniques, well-versed in world history and fascinated by science. He wrote many essays and curated important exhibitions of masters such as Poussin, Velázquez and Ingres. In this collection of essays that he wrote between 1965 and 1994, Arikha expounds on art and artists (Mantegna, Velázquez, Poussin, David, Ingres, Degas, Matisse, and more), technique, seeing, and the state of culture in his day which, one could argue, is no more hopeful today, almost thirty years later.

Citizen Spectator by Wendy Bellion Pdf

In this richly illustrated study, the first book-length exploration of illusionistic art in the early United States, Wendy Bellion investigates Americans' experiences with material forms of visual deception and argues that encounters with illusory art shaped their understanding of knowledge, representation, and subjectivity between 1790 and 1825. Focusing on the work of the well-known Peale family and their Philadelphia Museum, as well as other Philadelphians, Bellion explores the range of illusions encountered in public spaces, from trompe l'oeil paintings and drawings at art exhibitions to ephemeral displays of phantasmagoria, "Invisible Ladies," and other spectacles of deception. Bellion reconstructs the elite and vernacular sites where such art and objects appeared and argues that early national exhibitions doubled as spaces of citizen formation. Within a post-Revolutionary culture troubled by the social and political consequences of deception, keen perception signified able citizenship. Setting illusions into dialogue with Enlightenment cultures of science, print, politics, and the senses, Citizen Spectator demonstrates that pictorial and optical illusions functioned to cultivate but also to confound discernment. Bellion reveals the equivocal nature of illusion during the early republic, mapping its changing forms and functions, and uncovers surprising links between early American art, culture, and citizenship.

For many years the use of chemical agents such as pesticides and herbicides has been effective in controlling the many varieties of pests that infest both agricultural crops and backyard gardens. However, these pests are gradually becoming resistant to these agents, because the agents themselves are acting as selective factors making the pests better and better able to resist and persist. As a result, the use of biological controlling agents is increasing. This book is a comprehensive and authoritative handbook of biological control.
