Rural Texas Sayings by Ralph Cain,Robbie Prather Pdf

The independent reviews of the book are all good or excellent so far since Jan 14 to June 18, 2009. The readers and reviewers really liked it a lot. The first 40 pages are stories about my life growing to manhood. It was a very exciting one and written in a fun way. Then I tell about my experiences with politics, service, Abbie Hoffman and the civic groups, James Hoffa, plus a myriad of others who you probably heard of yourself. Every word in this book is true and I have over 2,000 newspaper clippings and pictures to back that up. Even the Second world war was written up less in the local papers and including the Phila. Inquirer and New York Times papers. The clippings are mostly from the mid 1970's and 1980's, when I was leading Bucks and Montgomery Counties in Pa. to develop a safer system of Public Drinking Water than the contaminated water we were getting from Philadelphia. This became a very controversial project with 100's of protestors at the pump site daily for over 10 years. Politicians pro and con became involved and many people went to jail. You will learn important info about your own water no matter where you live in this nation. Are we dying off younger because of our water? I think so! The book is interesting and enjoyable to read and you will learn a lot that you didn't know. This is enjoyable reading at its best. Lone Star Suburbs by Paul J. P. Sandul,M. Scott Sosebee Pdf

How is it that nearly 90 percent of the Texan population currently lives in metropolitan regions, but many Texans still embrace and promote a vision of their state’s nineteenth-century rural identity? This is one of the questions the editors and contributors to Lone Star Suburbs confront. One answer, they contend, may be the long shadow cast by a Texas myth that has served the dominant culture while marginalizing those on the fringes. Another may be the criticism suburbia has endured for undermining the very romantic individuality that the Texas myth celebrates. From the 1950s to the present, cultural critics have derided suburbs as landscapes of sameness and conformity. Only recently have historians begun to document the multidimensional industrial and ethnic aspects of suburban life as well as the development of multifamily housing, services, and leisure facilities. In Lone Star Suburbs, urban historian Paul J. P. Sandul, Texas historian M. Scott Sosebee, and ten contributors move the discussion of suburbia well beyond the stereotype of endless blocks of white middle-class neighborhoods and fill a gap in our knowledge of the Lone Star State. This collection supports the claim that Texas is not only primarily suburban but also the most representative example of this urban form in the United States. Essays consider transportation infrastructure, urban planning, and professional sports as they relate to the suburban ideal; the experiences of African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos in Texas metropolitan areas; and the environmental consequences of suburbanization in the state. Texas is no longer the bastion of rural life in the United States but now—for better or worse—represents the leading edge of suburban living. This important book offers a first step in coming to grips with that reality.

God Save Texas by Lawrence Wright Pdf

NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FINALIST • The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower—and a Texas native—takes us on a journey through the most controversial state in America. • “Beautifully written…. Essential reading [for] anyone who wants to understand how one state changed the trajectory of the country.” —NPR Texas is a red state, but the cities are blue and among the most diverse in the nation. Oil is still king, but Texas now leads California in technology exports. Low taxes and minimal regulation have produced extraordinary growth, but also striking income disparities. Texas looks a lot like the America that Donald Trump wants to create. Bringing together the historical and the contemporary, the political and the personal, Texas native Lawrence Wright gives us a colorful, wide-ranging portrait of a state that not only reflects our country as it is, but as it may become—and shows how the battle for Texas’s soul encompasses us all.

The Texas Left by David O'Donald Cullen,Kyle G. Wilkison Pdf

The Texas Left. Some would say the phrase is an oxymoron. For most of the twentieth century, the popular perception of Texas politics has been that of dominant conservatism, punctuated by images of cowboys, oil barons, and party bosses intent on preserving a decidedly capitalist status quo. In fact, poor farmers and laborers who were disenfranchised, segregated, and, depending on their ethnicity and gender, confronted with varying levels of hostility and discrimination, have long composed the "other" political heritage of Texas. In The Texas Left, fourteen scholars examine this heritage. Though largely ignored by historians of previous decades who focused instead on telling the stories of the Alamo, the Civil War, the cattle drives, and the oilfield wildcatters, this parallel narrative of those who sought to resist repression reveals themes important to the unfolding history of Texas and the Southwest. Volume editors David O'Donald Cullen and Kyle G. Wilkison have assembled a collection of pioneering studies that provide the broad outlines for future research on liberal and radical social and political causes in the state and region. Among the topics explored in this book are early efforts of women, blacks, Tejanos, labor organizers, and political activists to claim rights of citizenship, livelihood, and recognition, from the Reconstruction era until recent times.

Life’s Lessons by Jay Thomas Willis Pdf

In going through life one learns many of life’s lessons. This book points out some of the lessons the author has learned. He also gives some of his personal thoughts and ideas. The author begins his life on a small-dirt farm in East Texas, plowing a mule from sunup to sunset: he then receives an inadequate education from a rural-all-Black school, where he was neglected and abused; after which, he goes to college in East Texas, where he was out of place; later to the military; back to graduate school in Houston; and then settles in a South Suburb of Chicago, where he experienced cultural shock. These sayings, personal thoughts, and ideas are derived from his seventy-three years of experience.
