Safety First! Target Zero! No Harm! You repeat it often. You’ve plastered it all over the office and at the worksites. But do you really mean it? Think about your actions and decisions over the last year. Do they all make the workplace safer? Did you ever sacrifice safety for production? Even a little bit? This book is intended to be your mirror. How do people in your organization describe your safety leadership? Do you know? They, not you, decide what kind of safety leader you are by interpreting your words, actions, decisions, and behaviors. This book will not tell you what your safety vision should be, what Zero means, or whether you should aim for Zero. But it will show you how to be a credible safety leader. Sincerity + Consistency = Credibility. A credible safety leader must consistently demonstrate they are sincere in their commitment to safety, whatever it is. With credibility, people are more likely to follow you on the difficult journey to safety excellence. This book describes twelve traits people are looking for from a credible safety leader, using stories based on real experiences in dozens of companies around the world. This book also shows you how to: Know the Talk - specifically understand what your safety vision means Walk the Talk - consistently demonstrate your safety commitment Hear the Talk - understand how your words, actions, and behaviors are interpreted Safety leadership is hard. It’s a 24/7 job, and the stakes are as high as they can get: people’s lives. This book won’t make it easy, but will make it easier.

Safety First by Mark Aldrich Pdf

The first full account of why the American workplace became so dangerous, and why it is now so much safer. In 1907, American coal mines killed 3,242 men in occupational accidents, probably an all-time high both for the industry and for all laboring accidents in this country. In December alone, two mines at Monongah, West Virginia, blew up, killing 362 men. Railroad accidents that same year killed another 4,534. At a single South Chicago steel plant, 46 workers died on the job. In mines and mills and on railroads, work in America had become more dangerous than in any other advanced nation. Ninety years later, such numbers and events seem extraordinary. Although serious accidents do still occur, industrial jobs in the United States have become vastly and dramatically safer. In Safety First, Mark Aldrich offers the first full account of why the American workplace became so dangerous, and why it is now so much safer. Aldrich, an economist who once served as an OSHA investigator, first describes the increasing dangers of industrial work in late-nineteenth-century America as a result of technological change, careless work practices, and a legal system that minimized employers' responsibility for industrial accidents. He then explores the developments that led to improved safety—government regulation, corporate publicizing of safety measures, and legislation that raised the costs of accidents by requiring employers to pay workmen's compensation. At the heart of these changes, Aldrich contends, was the emergence of a safety ideology that stressed both worker and management responsibility for work accidents—a stunning reversal of earlier attitudes.

Safe and I Know It by Arnold Marsden Pdf

“Of course, my workplace is safe! If not, I would have done something about it.” Are you sure? Have you gone out and checked for yourself? Do incident notifications still surprise you? Are you sure you can’t make the workplace safer? This book presents a simple and effective process for a leader to know how safe their work is and how to make it safer. How? By observing “work as done,” verifying the effectiveness of hazard controls at the front line, and consistently removing obstacles and providing additional capability in a focused manner. You’ll never truly KNOW it’s SAFE, but you can MAKE your workplace SAFER, much safer! Whether safety is your first priority or third or fourth, wouldn’t you want to know? Why not? You know your balance sheet backwards and forwards. What about the safety of the people who deliver that value? Frontline Control Verification includes the following steps: - FOCUS on a critical hazard. - DEFINE the controls and leading indicators. - OBSERVE the controls during work. - ANALYZE the data as a team and commit to actions. - ACT quickly and appropriately. - COMMUNICATE results and progress. - REPEAT and improve. Seems simple, right? It is, but not so easy to execute. Safety never is. The true power of Frontline Control Verification lies in a leader's focus, curiosity, discipline, and persistence, in other words, their genuine care for the people in the organization. Are you up for the challenge? There couldn’t be more at stake!

How Could This Happen? by Jan U. Hagen Pdf

The first comprehensive reference work on error management, blending the latest thinking with state of the art industry practice on how organizations can learn from mistakes. Even today the reality of error management in some organizations is simple: “Don’t make mistakes. And if you do, you’re on your own unless you can blame someone else.” In most, it has moved on but it is still often centered around quality control, with Six Sigma Black Belts seeking to eradicate errors with an unattainable goal of zero. But the best organizations have gone further. They understand that mistakes happen, be they systemic or human. They have realized that rather than being stigmatized, errors have to be openly discussed, analyzed, and used as a source for learning. In How Could This Happen? Jan Hagen collects insights from the leading academics in this field – covering the prerequisites for error reporting, such as psychological safety, organizational learning and innovation, safety management systems, and the influence of senior leadership behavior on the reporting climate. This research is complemented by contributions from practitioners who write about their professional experiences of error management. They provide not only ideas for implementation but also offer an inside view of highly demanding work environments, such as flight operations in the military and operating nuclear submarines. Every organization makes mistakes. Not every organization learns from them. It’s the job of leaders to create the culture and processes that enable that to happen. Hagen and his team show you how.
